To earn ad revenue from a YouTube live stream, your channel must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), and you must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Then, in YouTube Studio, turn monetization on for the stream and choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-roll ads. That enables ad opportunities—not a guarantee that every viewer or ad slot will receive an ad.
Check eligibility before setting up live ads
Watch Page advertising on live streams requires YPP acceptance and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube’s published ad-revenue threshold is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the previous 365 days, or the applicable Shorts threshold. Meeting a threshold does not itself guarantee acceptance: YouTube reviews channels for its policies, and feature availability can depend on location. Check YouTube’s current YPP eligibility requirements and monetization options before relying on a threshold or feature.
On the terms described in YouTube’s partner earnings overview, partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module receive 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue. That is a revenue-share term, not a promise of a particular amount per view or stream. Fan-funding features use separate terms: the Commerce Product Module generally gives partners 70% of net revenue from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks when enabled and available.
Turn on monetization for a live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Choose the Stream tab to start an immediate stream, or use Manage to schedule one.
- Open the stream’s Edit settings, then choose Monetization.
- Set monetization to On. Pre-roll and display ads are enabled automatically when stream monetization is on.
- Choose a mid-roll approach: automatic, scheduled, or manual. Review the controls below before saving.
- After the stream, check YouTube Analytics and use the Live filter to review live-stream and replay revenue.
YouTube’s interface can change, so if a label differs, look for monetization settings within the selected stream in Live Control Room. Monetized channels without rights management can also set defaults for future streams; YouTube describes the default as monetization on with automatic mid-rolls at medium frequency. Channels with rights management do not currently have those channel-level defaults.

Choose how mid-roll ads are placed

A selected ad slot does not guarantee an ad. YouTube decides whether to serve an ad based on factors including viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. Some viewers may see an ad while others continue watching; when an ad ends or is skipped, the viewer rejoins the live stream.
Control interruptions during important moments
For automatic mid-rolls, use Delay ads in Live Control Room to pause them for 10 minutes during a key segment. A five-second countdown appears before automatic ads resume. This delay does not suppress manual ad placements, so avoid inserting a manual break during a moment you intend to keep uninterrupted.

YouTube reports that creators who enabled live automatic mid-rolls saw over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that had not enabled the feature. This was a YouTube-reported comparison across 207 countries in January 2024, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.
Consider the live format and viewing experience
YouTube’s format comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal live streams, but not for vertical live feed. Vertical live feed can be discovered in the Shorts feed; horizontal streams support clickable links in chat and the channel description. Both formats support memberships and gifted memberships. Choose a format around how viewers will discover and use the stream, as well as whether live ad breaks are part of your plan.

- Automatic ads can be absent in some contexts. Ads are turned off when a live stream is embedded on an external site with auto start.
- Side-by-side mid-rolls have limits. They appear automatically only on eligible streams, and streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads.
- Ad suitability affects earnings. Age-restricted content can be ineligible for monetization, and advertiser-unfriendly material can receive limited or no ads.
- Rights matter. Make sure you have the necessary rights to all video, music, and other material in the stream; copyright or monetization-policy issues can restrict earnings or the stream itself.
For current policy details, see YouTube’s channel monetization policies. Geographic availability can also change; check the current YPP and monetization pages for your country. YouTube’s earnings page notes a Russia-specific pause affecting ads and some monetization features. Its help documentation also states that updated YPP terms begin February 1, 2027, with acceptance due by January 31, 2027; channels active near those dates should check the terms in Studio.
Other YouTube revenue options for live streams
Ads are only one potential source of live revenue. Eligible channels may also use Super Chat and Super Stickers, which let viewers pay to highlight a chat message or animated image, and channel memberships, which provide recurring payments in exchange for channel perks. These features have separate eligibility and availability requirements and require the Commerce Product Module or an applicable prior agreement. YouTube Premium revenue and Shopping are other YPP options, not substitutes for enabling Watch Page ads.

YouTube documents a YouTube plugin for Elgato Stream Deck that can insert ads. This is an optional physical control for live producers; it is not required to turn monetization on. You can manage the ordinary setup in Studio without one.
