There are two different ways to earn from music on YouTube: monetize eligible videos on your YouTube channel through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), or distribute recordings to YouTube Music through a digital aggregator and receive earnings reported under that distributor’s terms. They are separate routes, with different eligibility, rights and payment arrangements. YouTube does not publish one universal amount it pays per music stream.

Choose the revenue route that matches your music

Route Best suited to What you do What determines earnings or eligibility
Monetize channel videos Artists publishing original music videos, performances or other eligible videos Qualify for YPP, apply, pass review, accept relevant monetization terms and enable eligible features in YouTube Studio YPP thresholds, program and feature rules, rights clearance, accepted terms and advertiser suitability
Distribute recordings to YouTube Music Rights holders seeking official audio releases, including Art Tracks, and distribution reporting Choose an aggregator to deliver audio files and metadata The distributor’s fees or royalty share, rights administration, territory coverage, reporting and payout terms
Use Creator Music in eligible creator videos Eligible YPP creators selecting catalog tracks for a video Check the specific track’s current license or revenue-sharing option and permitted use in Studio Track-specific terms, territory, format and music-rights costs

A music video uploaded to a channel and an audio release delivered to YouTube Music are not interchangeable. A video’s monetization follows channel and video rules; an audio release’s distribution and earnings reporting depend on the aggregator and applicable rights arrangements.

Monetize music videos through the YouTube Partner Program

Meet the full ad-revenue threshold

YouTube’s YPP overview, accessed October 3, 2026, lists two alternative thresholds for full ad-revenue eligibility: 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours during the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views during the previous 90 days. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour threshold.

Meeting a threshold does not automatically turn on monetization. The channel must also meet YPP policies, be in a country or region where the program is available, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, complete the required account and AdSense steps, apply and pass YouTube’s review. After acceptance, accept the relevant monetization terms or modules and enable the available features in Studio.

Know what the lower entry tier does—and does not—unlock

In eligible regions, YouTube lists an earlier-access tier for selected fan-funding and Shopping features: 500 subscribers, at least three public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 long-form watch hours in the past 365 days or 3 million Shorts views in the past 90 days. This is not the full ad-revenue threshold. Feature availability and individual feature requirements vary, so check the eligibility details shown for your channel in Studio.

Track the counted activity correctly

For the 4,000-hour route, the relevant measure is qualified public watch time on long-form videos in the stated 12-month window—not simply every play or every listener. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward it. YouTube’s separate guidance for distributing audio to YouTube Music does not establish that listening there automatically contributes to a channel’s YPP watch hours.

Release recordings on YouTube Music through an aggregator

YouTube says artists need audio files and metadata delivered through an aggregator for full publication on YouTube and YouTube Music, including when they also upload music videos to an artist channel. An aggregator (also called a digital distributor) delivers releases to streaming platforms and can handle metadata, DDEX delivery, support and earnings reporting. Services may charge a flat fee or retain a share of royalties.

Understand why there is no universal YouTube payment per stream

YouTube’s official pages reviewed for this article do not publish a current rate that applies to every music play. Channel-video ad revenue and YouTube Music release earnings arise through different routes. Results can depend on geography, rights ownership and agreements, the applicable monetization feature, distributor deductions and other terms. A claimed per-stream amount without those qualifications is not a reliable promise of what a particular artist will receive.

For Creator Music revenue sharing, YouTube describes a standard 55% share that is adjusted to cover music-rights costs, including costs influenced by the number of tracks and additional rights costs. That is not a guaranteed artist take or a platform-wide per-stream rate.

Clear the rights before you monetize

YouTube makes creators responsible for clearing audio and visual rights in their videos. Third-party material, including unlicensed music, is not eligible for monetization. Before uploading, confirm you have the necessary rights for both the recording and any composition, samples, artwork, footage or other material used, and make sure your permissions cover the intended use.

YouTube says paid Creator Music licenses were deprecated effective August 10, 2026, as the service transitions to gratis licenses. Existing paid licenses remain valid only for their original term and cannot be renewed under the old terms. Because track terms can change, verify the current license or revenue-share option, territory and permitted format in Studio before using a track. Shorts monetization follows separate YouTube rules.

Keep a prerecorded music stream running on YouTube

If you want to present rights-cleared, prerecorded music as a continuous YouTube live stream, that is a separate publishing format—not a shortcut around YPP eligibility, copyright rules or YouTube Music distribution. Confirm you can use every recording and visual in the loop, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization requirements. A service that loops uploaded videos does not itself make the channel eligible for monetization or guarantee earnings.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded recording or playlist live 24/7: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded media streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Streaming a prerecorded video does not change YPP thresholds or settle music rights. Start the free day with StreamNeo.

Check current terms before relying on thresholds or features

YouTube’s YPP overview, accessed October 3, 2026, announces updated terms starting February 1, 2027 and says creators should accept them in Studio by January 31, 2027 to continue fully monetizing. Program thresholds, feature access and music licensing terms can change; check YouTube Help and the notices and eligibility panels in your Studio account before making a plan.
