Moderate Super Chats and Super Stickers as live-chat messages: apply your channel rules and YouTube’s Community Guidelines, use YouTube’s filters and participation controls, and assign people to review held messages. An always-on stream has no special moderation mode, so plan moderator coverage and shift handoffs as an operating procedure—not as a YouTube feature.
How Super Chat moderation works
YouTube says creators can moderate Super Chats and Super Stickers the same way as ordinary live-chat messages. They are paid messages, not exempt messages: apply the same channel rules and Community Guidelines you use for other chat.
YouTube can hold potentially inappropriate messages for review, but a person decides whether to show or hide a held message. If nobody acts, it remains hidden. YouTube cautions that its system is imperfect; treat automated filtering as help for moderators, not a replacement for them.
Set up moderation before the stream
- Choose a held-message setting. In YouTube Studio’s community moderation/content controls, select None, Basic, or Strict for live-chat moderation. Basic holds potentially inappropriate messages; Strict holds a broader range. Interface labels and locations can vary by device and may change.
- Add blocked words and phrases. Put clearly out-of-bounds terms in the blocked-words control. YouTube says messages containing or closely matching those terms can be blocked, but this does not guarantee every spelling or variant will be caught.
- Set slow mode if the chat rate is hard to manage. Slow mode adds a delay between messages from each user. It controls frequency, not content; the channel owner, moderators, and channel members are exempt.
- Choose who may participate. Subscribers-only or members-only chat can restrict participation. Use these only if the narrower audience is appropriate for the stream.
- Assign moderators and agree on escalation. Tell moderators what counts as a violation, when to remove a message, when to time out a user, and when to hide a repeat offender. Make sure someone is responsible for held-message review.
Choose the right control for the problem

Give moderators permissions that fit the job

Moderate the stream continuously
Review held messages
Check the held-message queue during moderator coverage. A held message stays hidden unless someone chooses to show it; leaving it alone does not publish it. YouTube’s own guidance says, “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.”

Escalate in proportion to the behavior
- Remove an offending message when the content itself violates the rules.
- Use a timeout when a user needs a temporary pause. YouTube documents timeout intervals from 10 seconds up to 24 hours.
- Hide a user from the channel for repeat disruption.
- If chat cannot be managed safely, turn it off—even after the event has started. This is a last-resort participation trade-off, not a filter.
Make shift handoffs consistent
For a stream that runs around the clock, keep the channel rules, escalation choices, and unresolved cases consistent across moderator handoffs. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe shift lengths, staffing ratios, or a handoff template; decide coverage based on your channel’s needs and clearly assign responsibility for the queue.
What happens after a Super Chat is removed?
YouTube says deleting a Super Chat message after the stream does not result in a refund. If a Super Chat is moderated and removed for policy violations, YouTube donates its portion of the revenue to charity. YouTube’s Help page says creators receive 70% of confirmed Supers revenue after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees are deducted; it says YouTube currently covers transaction costs, including credit-card fees. The page does not state a year for these terms, so treat the share and fee details as subject to change.
