The safest Jev migration is not a one-click model swap. Replace each call site against its decision contract: document the input state, bounded question, allowed outcomes, uncertainty behavior, and downstream action; test a candidate on representative cases; then release it behind application-owned validation, logging, fallback, and review. A valid label is not proof that the label is correct.

No authoritative Jev compatibility matrix, direct conversion utility, or universally safe replacement is established by the available documentation. “TypeSafe-compatible” therefore has to mean compatible with your application’s decision contract and operating constraints, not merely an API that accepts similar JSON.

What you are migrating

An independent guide describes Jev as a hosted System One decision model: your application supplies state and a bounded, typed question, and the service returns a choice, score, or yes/no probability rather than a paragraph. It is described as a poor fit for drafting, summarizing, or explaining. See the independent Jev overview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A second developer guide groups Jev-style work into three patterns: selecting from predefined labels, scoring against an ordered rubric, and answering a yes/no proposition. It also describes pairing bounded decisions with a text model when the user needs an explanation or an open-ended draft. That guide discloses that it is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by TypeSafe AI; treat its examples as explanatory rather than as official migration documentation: Jev API tutorials and examples.

Compatibility has three layers:

  • Semantic compatibility: the replacement can express the same question, labels, rubric, and uncertainty states.
  • Operational compatibility: it meets your latency, cost, deployment, data-handling, observability, and authorization requirements.
  • Integration compatibility: your adapter can preserve the application’s input and output shape without changing business logic or side effects.

An output that passes a schema check can still be the wrong decision for the case. The migration must therefore preserve the contract and measure behavior, rather than assuming that typed output guarantees correctness.

Start with a call-site inventory

Do not begin by choosing a new vendor. First make every Jev request visible, including calls hidden in background jobs, feature flags, moderation queues, and scheduled workflows. For each call, record the information below.

Field What to capture Why it matters
Call-site identity Service, route or job, owner, release version Lets you migrate and roll back one behavior at a time.
Input state Fields sent, units, null handling, permitted ranges, and whether data is normalized A replacement cannot be evaluated if the actual input distribution is unknown.
Decision question The exact proposition or classification question, including any context supplied to the model Small wording changes can change the decision boundary.
Allowed result Labels, score levels, yes/no meaning, an “other” or review state, and confidence fields These are part of the output contract, not presentation details.
Downstream use Routing, eligibility, ranking, notification, account change, or other side effect Risk and rollback requirements depend on what the result triggers.
Error behavior Timeout, invalid output, low confidence, and provider outage behavior Preserves safe behavior when the replacement cannot answer.
Decision cost What a false positive, false negative, or delayed result costs Determines evaluation thresholds and when a person must review.

Save a sample of real requests, with sensitive data minimized or redacted, and label the expected result. Include ordinary, borderline, missing-data, and adversarial cases; a collection containing only easy examples will make a migration look safer than it is.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate bounded decisions from language generation

Classify each call before comparing replacements. A bounded decision has a finite output space or an explicit rubric. A language task produces text whose acceptable wording is not fully enumerated.

Workload Typical output Evaluation focus Suitable comparison
Label selection One of a known set such as approve, review, or reject Per-label errors, abstentions, and class imbalance Decision model, rules, or trained classifier
Rubric scoring An ordered level or numeric score tied to defined criteria Agreement with the rubric and severity of score deviations Decision model, rules, or classifier
Yes/no proposition A boolean or probability for a precisely stated claim Threshold behavior, calibration, and costly false results Decision model, rules, or classifier
Explanation or summary Natural-language rationale, recap, or transformation Factuality, completeness, style, and data leakage Text-generation system
Route then explain A bounded route followed by a written response Routing errors and the quality of the generated text separately Hybrid architecture

Do not force a text generator into a decision role simply because it can emit a label. Conversely, do not use a bounded decision service to draft prose. Keeping those jobs separate makes the replacement easier to test and lets you apply stricter controls to the part that changes state.

Freeze the decision contract before changing the model

Write the contract in a versioned document or schema that is independent of the provider. At minimum, specify:

  • Every input field, type, unit, allowed range, default, and missing-value rule.
  • The question in unambiguous language, including the time window and subject of the decision.
  • Each output label and its business meaning; do not rely on names such as “high” or “class_2” without definitions.
  • Rubric levels and the boundary between adjacent levels.
  • Whether a probability is calibrated, merely a model score, or not available.
  • What happens when the correct result is unknown, outside the label set, or requires human review.
  • Timeout, retry, authorization, logging, and idempotency requirements.
  • The exact application action associated with each result, including which actions require a second check.

Keep an explicit review or abstain outcome if the current workflow has one. If Jev currently returns only a label, add application-side handling for invalid, missing, or low-confidence results rather than silently mapping every failure to a business label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build an evaluation set from the real workflow

Create a fixed, versioned set of labeled examples before sending production traffic to a candidate. A useful set contains:

  • Representative cases sampled across customers, products, regions, and time periods that materially affect the decision.
  • Borderline cases where reviewers disagree or the rubric changes outcome at a narrow threshold.
  • Rare but high-cost cases, even if they are a small share of volume.
  • Missing, malformed, stale, duplicated, and contradictory inputs.
  • Cases that should produce review or abstention rather than a definitive label.

Have the expected result recorded by a qualified reviewer or by an existing deterministic rule, and preserve the reason for that result. Split examples by decision type and risk; one aggregate score can hide a serious failure in a small but important class.

Compare the candidate with the current Jev behavior and with a simple baseline such as a deterministic rule. Record disagreements, invalid outputs, latency, retries, cost, and the downstream action that would have occurred. For high-cost decisions, inspect every disagreement instead of relying only on an average metric.

Choose an architectural approach, not a guessed product

The available material does not establish a current, reliable comparison of named Jev-compatible alternatives. Select the architecture that fits your contract, then verify specific products against it.

Approach Use it when Advantages Risks and questions
Rules engine Outcomes and boundaries are stable, explainable, and expressible as maintained rules. Deterministic behavior, easy audit, predictable latency, and no model drift. Rule maintenance can become complex; it may perform poorly when the boundary is learned from unstructured signals.
Trained classifier You have enough representative labels and the boundary is better learned than hand-written. Finite outputs, measurable performance, and control over deployment. Requires retraining and drift monitoring; label quality and class imbalance limit results.
General text model The task is explanation, transformation, summarization, or another open-ended language operation. Flexible language handling and natural explanations. Open-ended output is harder to constrain; it may be unsuitable for an authoritative state-changing decision without an additional control layer.
Hybrid A bounded decision routes work and a separate component writes the explanation or draft. Preserves a strict decision boundary while providing useful language. Introduces orchestration, two failure modes, and a need to ensure the explanation cannot override the decision.

For every candidate, ask whether it supports your exact output contract, can run within your data policy, exposes sufficient logs and error states, meets measured latency and cost under your request pattern, and allows deterministic rules or human review for high-cost outcomes.

Implement a provider-neutral adapter

Keep provider-specific request construction in one adapter. Business code should call a stable interface and should not know how a particular model encodes labels, scores, retries, or errors. The following TypeScript-like shape is illustrative application code, not an official Jev or TypeSafe API:

type DecisionRequest<State> = {
  state: State;
  questionVersion: string;
};

type DecisionResult<Label> = {
  label: Label | "review";
  score?: number;
  provider: string;
  contractVersion: string;
};

interface DecisionProvider<State, Label> {
  decide(request: DecisionRequest<State>): Promise<DecisionResult<Label>>;
}

Implement the adapter in this order:

  1. Normalize input: validate types, ranges, units, and required fields before making a request. Reject or route malformed state according to the contract.
  2. Send the versioned question: include the contract version and only the context needed for the decision. Avoid accidental changes caused by prompts or field-order differences.
  3. Parse strictly: accept only documented labels and score ranges. Treat extra text, unknown labels, missing fields, and non-finite numbers as invalid results.
  4. Apply uncertainty policy: convert a low-confidence or uncalibrated result to review only if that rule is defined and tested; do not invent a threshold during rollout.
  5. Retry safely: retry transient transport failures with bounded backoff and an idempotency strategy. Do not repeat a side effect just because a decision request timed out.
  6. Log for diagnosis: record contract version, request identifier, latency, outcome, error class, and rollout cohort. Redact or hash sensitive state according to your retention policy.
  7. Separate decision from side effect: persist the result and require application authorization before changing an account, sending a notice, moving money, or taking another irreversible action.

Run contract tests against fixtures for every label, score boundary, invalid response, timeout, and provider error. Keep a second implementation or the previous Jev adapter available until the candidate has passed shadow and canary phases.

Roll out without making the candidate authoritative on day one

Shadow phase

Send a copy of eligible requests to the candidate while Jev or an existing rule remains authoritative. Do not let the candidate trigger side effects. Compare outputs, latency, invalid-response rate, and disagreement reasons by cohort.

Reviewable canary

Enable the candidate for a small, explicitly selected cohort. Require human approval for consequential outcomes and preserve the old path as a one-click or automatically triggered fallback. Set a stop condition before launch, such as an invalid-output rate, high-cost error count, latency budget, or review queue size.

Gradual expansion

Increase traffic only after the candidate meets the predeclared conditions across each important decision type. Keep the cohort identifier in logs so a later incident can be tied to the exact model, contract, and adapter version.

Rollback

Make rollback a configuration change rather than a code deployment. Confirm that queued work, cached decisions, and in-flight retries cannot apply a result produced by the disabled candidate after the switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep application safeguards in charge

The independent developer guide states that the application should retain validation, retries, authorization, logging, and final side effects, and recommends a review path when a wrong answer is costly: developer guide. Those responsibilities should remain in your application after migration, regardless of which provider you select.

  • Authorization: check the caller and resource permissions independently of the model output.
  • Validation: enforce the schema and business invariants after parsing, not just before the request.
  • Idempotency: attach operation identifiers so retries cannot duplicate an action.
  • Auditability: retain the input reference, contract version, provider version, output, reviewer decision, and side effect result for the period required by your policy.
  • Human review: route high-impact, low-confidence, novel, or out-of-distribution cases to a person.
  • Data handling: confirm retention, regional processing, encryption, deletion, and training-use terms for the selected service before sending production data.

Version, latency, and cost information to verify

The independent Jev guide lists stable model jev-1.13.0 with alias jev-latest, plus a newer jev-1.14.0 preview alias. It also reports vendor claims of 70–500 ms latency and input billing of $0.042 per million tokens: guide with the version, latency, and pricing claims.

These are volatile claims reported by an independent guide, not independent measurements. Verify current model aliases, regional availability, billing units, rate limits, and latency with current official documentation before making a purchasing or release decision. Measure end-to-end latency in your own workload, including network time, retries, validation, and human-review queues.

Common migration failures and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Every response parses, but business outcomes worsen The replacement learned a different boundary or the labels were mapped by name rather than meaning. Review disagreement cases against the written rubric and test each label separately.
Unknown labels appear intermittently Loose parsing or an open-ended component is being treated as a closed classifier. Use strict enum validation and route unknown output to review or fallback.
Timeout retries create duplicate actions Decision and side effect are coupled, or requests lack idempotency. Persist the decision first and authorize side effects with an operation identifier.
Offline tests pass but production performance drops The evaluation set omitted rare customers, malformed data, traffic peaks, or distribution changes. Expand the set with production strata and monitor drift by cohort.
Costs exceed the estimate Token accounting, retries, explanations, or traffic volume differs from assumptions. Measure actual input and retry volume, cap optional context, and budget by call site.
A model update changes results silently An alias points to a moving version or the provider has changed defaults. Pin versions where possible, log the resolved version, and rerun contract evaluations before upgrades.
Reviewers cannot explain disagreements The system records only the final label. Store the contract version, relevant input reference, rubric outcome, and reviewer reason without retaining unnecessary sensitive text.

A practical go/no-go checklist

Move a call site only when all applicable answers are “yes”:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is the call classified as a bounded decision, language task, or deliberate hybrid?
  • Are input fields, question wording, labels, score semantics, and review behavior versioned?
  • Does the candidate support the complete contract, including abstention or “other” behavior?
  • Has it been tested on representative, borderline, malformed, and high-cost cases?
  • Have disagreements been reviewed by decision type rather than hidden in one aggregate score?
  • Are validation, authorization, retries, logging, idempotency, and side effects still application-owned?
  • Is there a non-authoritative shadow phase, a bounded canary, a monitored stop condition, and a tested rollback?
  • Have data-handling, regional, retention, rate-limit, version, latency, and cost constraints been verified for the selected service?

If any answer is “no,” keep the existing path authoritative and treat the candidate as an experiment. The evidence available here does not justify naming one universal Jev replacement; the responsible choice is the one that passes your contract and workload-specific evaluation.
