Measure over underwear or a thin fitted layer, keep the tape level and snug without pulling it tight, and do not assume your usual letter or numeric size means the same thing across brands.
What you need and how to prepare
- Use a flexible cloth or fiberglass measuring tape. A rigid metal tape does not wrap around body curves as well. Dress Measurement’s guide recommends a flexible tape and measuring over light underwear or a thin base layer.
- Measure over underwear or a thin fitted layer, not bulky clothing. Stand naturally and breathe normally.
- Keep the tape horizontal where it circles your body. It should touch your skin or clothing without compressing it.
- Use a mirror to check that the tape stays level across your back, or ask someone to help with measurements that are hard to reach.
How to take the measurements
Chest or bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest or bust, keeping it level across your back. Follow the chart’s specific instructions: for example, Carhartt’s guide places the chest tape just under the arms and across the shoulder blades, while the key bust landmark is usually the fullest part.
Waist
Check where the brand wants you to measure before wrapping the tape. Waist landmarks are not consistent: Carhartt identifies the natural bend by having you bend side to side and notes that it may not be the narrowest point; Levi’s US size guide describes its waist point as the smallest part. Use the landmark in the chart you plan to consult.
Hips or seat
Measure around the fullest part of your hips or seat, with the tape horizontal. If a chart lists both high hip and full hip, take care to match the right measurement to the right row.

Inseam and other lengths
For pants, measure along the inside leg from the crotch toward the ankle or the hem point you want. Some retailer guides instead ask you to measure a pair of pants that fits well, following its inside seam from crotch to cuff. Take shoulder width, sleeve length, thigh, or upper-arm measurements only when the item’s chart or a fit concern makes them relevant.
Record your results
Write down each measurement with its unit—centimeters or inches—and the date you took it. This makes it easier to use the figures at checkout and to notice when you need to measure again.

How to use an online size chart
- Open the size chart for the item’s brand and category. If the product page has its own chart or fit notes, use those rather than relying only on a general size chart.
- Check whether the chart gives body measurements or finished garment measurements. The two describe different things.
- Match each relevant measurement to the chart’s named landmark and unit. Do not treat S, M, L or a numeric size as a universal conversion between brands.
- Read the fit description and fabric or design information before choosing. Stretch and a fitted, relaxed, loose, or oversized cut can affect how a garment feels on the same body.
For example, UNIQLO Singapore’s support guidance defines product measurements as measurements of the garment laid flat and suggests comparing them with clothes you already own. A flat garment width is not the same as your body’s circumference, so compare like with like. UNIQLO also notes that design and fabric characteristics can cause small measurement differences; a chart is guidance, not a guarantee of exact fit.
Brand charts are specific to their own sizing. Levi’s US guide, for instance, publishes different measurements for its own categories; those figures should not be treated as a general size conversion for other labels.

What to do if you are between sizes
Compare the neighboring rows against the measurements that matter for that garment. Then weigh the intended cut, the item’s stretch and fabric or design notes, and whether you prefer a closer or roomier fit. A measurement is a useful starting point, but it cannot account for every fabric behavior or personal preference.
Some brands give a specific between-size recommendation for a particular measurement. Carhartt, for example, advises choosing the next size up when chest falls between sizes. Treat that as Carhartt’s guidance for its own chart, not a rule for every brand or garment.
