A game payment promotion is profitable only when it creates more incremental contribution profit than it costs. Measure that outcome with a randomized treatment group and a holdout control, use net store proceeds rather than gross bookings, and observe refunds, repeat purchases, retention, and downstream lifetime value over a defined payback window. The core calculation is: (treatment net proceeds per eligible user − control net proceeds per eligible user) × eligible users − promotion, payment, marketing, and operating costs.
Define what “profitable” means before launch
Write the decision rule before anyone sees results. A useful hypothesis is: “A 20% bundle discount for lapsed payers will increase 30-day net contribution profit per eligible user.” The hypothesis identifies the audience, discount, and observation period; the decision rule states the minimum profit or return required to repeat the offer.
Use contribution profit, not gross sales
Gross bookings can rise while profit falls if players who would have paid full price simply receive a discount. Start with proceeds actually retained after the app-store or payment-platform share, taxes, currency conversion, refunds, chargebacks, and other adjustments. Then subtract costs caused by the promotion.

The eligible-user denominator matters. Dividing only by purchasers hides the cost of reaching players who saw the offer but did not buy. Report both total incremental profit and incremental profit per eligible user so that campaigns of different sizes can be compared.
Set the payback window
Choose the period over which the promotion must recover its cost before launch. A short window such as seven days is appropriate for a one-time impulse offer when later behavior is unlikely to matter. A 30-day or longer window is more suitable when the offer can affect repeat purchases, subscriptions, churn, or player retention. Record the date on which the decision will be made; extending the window after seeing weak early results creates an unplanned, optimistic analysis.
Define the profitability threshold
Examples include positive 30-day incremental contribution profit, a minimum contribution margin per eligible player, or a payback period shorter than a specified number of days. Include an uncertainty rule, such as repeating only when the lower bound of the confidence interval is above zero, or classifying results as inconclusive when the interval includes both a material loss and a material gain.

Freeze eligibility and exclusions
Document the player attributes that make someone eligible: platform, country or territory, account status, game version, payer history, tenure, and any level or inventory requirements. Exclude players who cannot receive the offer, have already bought the promoted product, are subject to a legal or pricing restriction, or are in another overlapping experiment. Freeze these rules before assignment.
Randomize eligible players
Randomly assign eligible players to a promotion treatment or a holdout control. The treatment receives the specified price, bundle, or payment incentive; the control follows the normal store and in-game experience. Randomization should occur before exposure and remain stable for the experiment, so a player cannot move between groups after seeing an offer.
Record the assignment for every eligible player, including those who never open the game during the campaign. Analyze by assignment (an intention-to-treat view) as the primary result. A purchaser-only comparison is not causal because the promotion itself changes who purchases.

Control exposure and contamination
Freeze the geography, platform, price, offer tier, exposure dates, and traffic sources. Prevent control players from receiving the promotion through a campaign link, customer-support grant, push notification, web store, or another device. If a control player is accidentally exposed, flag the event and report a contamination analysis rather than silently moving that player to treatment.
Power the test for the decision
Use a sample size large enough to detect the smallest profit lift worth acting on, not merely a small conversion change. Payment promotions often affect a low-frequency, high-value event, so variance in proceeds can be large. Include expected conversion, average proceeds, refund rate, and the chosen confidence level in the planning calculation. If the sample cannot support a segment or a reliable interval, do not make a separate segment decision.
Instrument the complete payment funnel
Create one persistent player or account key that can join experiment assignment, game events, and store transactions without exposing unnecessary personal data. Log timestamps in a consistent time zone and retain the offer identifier, price, currency, platform, and game version.
Events to capture
- Eligibility: the player met the frozen rules and was assigned to treatment or control.
- Impression: the promotion was rendered, including placement and offer version.
- Click or tap: the player opened the purchase flow.
- Purchase attempt: checkout was initiated.
- Successful transaction: the platform confirmed payment.
- Entitlement delivery: the purchased currency, item, or bundle was granted.
- Refund, chargeback, or reversal: the transaction later became uncollected.
- Repeat purchase: the player bought the same or another product during the payback window.
- Retention and subscription state: returning sessions, renewals, churn, and cancellations where relevant.
Join these events to the platform’s transaction and proceeds reports. Separate an attempted purchase from a completed, collected transaction; a failed or interrupted checkout should not be counted as revenue.
Use platform reporting as a reconciliation layer
Apple’s App Store Connect and App Analytics documentation lists sales, paying users, average proceeds per paying user, proceeds by location and currency, taxes and adjustments, detailed monthly transaction reports, campaign links, conversion monitoring, product-page optimization tests, subscription state, retention, churn, and peer-group benchmarks. Use those fields to reconcile your event stream and avoid treating gross bookings as profit. Peer-group benchmarks can provide context, but they do not replace the randomized control result for your game.
Recommended Free Tools
For promoted in-app purchases, Apple documents that an offer can appear on a product page, in search results, or as a featured item. App Store Connect configures promotion visibility and order, while StoreKit completes the transaction in the app. Treat the platform’s presentation context as an experiment variable when placement differs between groups.

Test before production measurement
Apple provides sandbox and StoreKit testing for purchase offers and transactions. Exercise offer-code redemption, interrupted purchases, refunds, server notifications, entitlement delivery, and purchases initiated outside the app before reading production results. A missing server notification or delayed entitlement can otherwise look like a failed promotion or an unearned refund.
Reconcile net proceeds and promotion costs
Build a transaction-level proceeds table
| Component | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| Displayed price and discount | Record the player’s local price, original price, discount amount, product tier, and currency. |
| Store or payment fee | Subtract the applicable platform or processor share rather than using the displayed price. |
| Taxes and adjustments | Use the platform’s proceeds and adjustment fields for the relevant territory and period. |
| Currency conversion | Apply the conversion used in the financial report and retain the original currency for auditability. |
| Refunds and chargebacks | Reverse proceeds when the transaction is refunded or charged back; state the refund observation window. |
| Promotion cost | Count the discount relative to the eligible player’s normal price, including free items or bonus currency at their attributable cost. |
| Marketing and operations | Include incremental campaign media, messaging, customer-support, fraud-review, and fulfillment costs. |
Do not subtract a fixed development cost merely because the promotion ran if that cost would have existed without the campaign. Report fixed costs separately and show a sensitivity case that allocates them when the decision concerns a full program rather than a single flight.
Match financial dates correctly
A transaction can occur in the promotion window while a refund arrives weeks later. Use a provisional result for the early read, then update the final result after the stated refund and chargeback window. Keep transaction date, settlement date, and refund date as separate fields so delayed reversals are not attributed to the wrong campaign.
Calculate incremental lift and confidence
For treatment and control, calculate the following per eligible user:
| Metric | Calculation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion | Players with a successful transaction ÷ eligible players | Shows whether the offer creates additional payers. |
| Net proceeds per eligible user | Total collected proceeds after fees, taxes, refunds, and adjustments ÷ eligible players | Primary financial denominator. |
| Average proceeds per payer | Net proceeds ÷ successful payers | Separates payer volume from payer value. |
| Purchase frequency | Collected transactions ÷ eligible players | Captures repeat buying and bundle behavior. |
| Incremental payer conversion | Treatment conversion − control conversion | Measures additional payers caused by the offer. |
| Incremental proceeds | Treatment net proceeds per eligible user − control net proceeds per eligible user | Measures financial lift before campaign costs. |
| Cost per incremental payer | Promotion and campaign costs ÷ incremental payers | Useful when acquisition or reactivation is part of the goal. |
Use absolute and relative lift
Report the absolute difference in percentage points and currency, then the relative change against control. Relative lift can look large when the control rate is tiny; absolute lift shows the number of additional payers or dollars per eligible player. Attach a confidence interval to the difference in conversion and proceeds. For skewed proceeds, use a method appropriate to the distribution, such as bootstrap intervals, and state the method in the analysis record.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose 100,000 eligible players are randomized evenly. Treatment produces $1.18 in collected proceeds per eligible player and control produces $0.96, so incremental proceeds are $0.22 per eligible player, or $22,000 before campaign costs. If the discount, messaging, support, and other incremental costs total $9,000, incremental contribution profit is $13,000. This example is arithmetic only; your store fees, taxes, refunds, and player behavior determine the real values.

Measure delayed effects and lifetime value
Read results at checkpoints that match the game economy, such as D1, D7, and D30. At each checkpoint, update collected proceeds, refund exposure, repeat purchases, retention, subscription renewal, churn, and any measurable downstream value. A promotion that produces an immediate purchase but lowers later spending or retention may fail the longer payback test.
Define attributable lifetime value carefully
Use the control group to estimate the value that would have occurred without the offer. Include only downstream behavior inside the pre-specified attribution window. If a forecast extends beyond observed data, show the assumptions and a low, central, and high LTV case rather than presenting the forecast as realized profit.
Watch for timing shifts
Compare full-price purchases and later purchases, not just total transactions during the campaign. A discount can move a purchase earlier without increasing 30-day value. Record whether the player bought a different tier, spent promotional currency later, or stopped buying after using the offer.
Check cannibalization and offer design
Identify purchases that would have happened anyway
Compare treatment and control for full-price products, neighboring bundle tiers, and total payer value. A higher treatment conversion with lower average proceeds per payer can still be unprofitable. Examine whether premium buyers switched to a discounted tier, whether a bundle replaced several ordinary purchases, and whether the offer reduced later full-price demand.

Test tiered discounts as a hypothesis
Microsoft’s Game Development Kit commerce guidance states: “You can provide a static percentage discount on the pricing of all tiers, but offering your higher tiered content at a higher discount percentage generates higher incremental revenue over the promotional timeline than static discount pricing.” Treat this as a design hypothesis, not a guarantee. Test higher-tier discounts against margin loss, cannibalization, refund rates, and player behavior in your own economy.

Respect personalized visibility rules
Apple documents that promotion visibility and order can be customized for a user’s experience or previous purchases, such as showing relevant game levels and hiding products already purchased. Therefore, prior-purchase history and eligibility rules must be analysis dimensions. A promotion shown only to lapsed payers cannot be compared directly with one shown to new players without accounting for that selection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Segment results without manufacturing false winners
After the overall result is calculated, break it out where sample sizes support a stable estimate:
| Segment | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Platform | Do fees, presentation, checkout behavior, or retention differ? |
| Country or territory | Do local prices, taxes, currency conversion, or purchasing power change contribution? |
| Payer history | Do never-payers, active payers, and lapsed payers respond differently? |
| Prior purchase history | Does ownership of a product or tier alter eligibility, visibility, or cannibalization? |
| Acquisition source | Does value differ for organic, paid, referral, or returning traffic? |
| Player tenure | Do new, established, and long-dormant players have different payback? |
| Offer tier | Which bundle or price point produces contribution rather than only volume? |
Pre-specify the important segments, report their sample sizes and confidence intervals, and suppress or label segments with inadequate data. Searching many segments after the fact will eventually produce an apparently positive result by chance.
Run sensitivity cases and stress tests
Recalculate incremental contribution profit under assumptions that could materially change the decision:
- Refund timing: treat unsettled transactions as provisional, then include refunds through the chosen final window.
- Attribution window: compare a short conversion window with the longer period used for repeat purchases and LTV.
- LTV forecast: show conservative, central, and optimistic retention or renewal assumptions.
- Fixed-cost treatment: show results with only incremental costs and a second case that allocates relevant program costs.
- Contamination: estimate the effect of control players who accidentally saw the offer.
- Currency and territory: test the result using the platform’s settlement conversion and plausible exchange-rate variation.
- Fraud and chargebacks: remove or reverse suspicious transactions under a documented rule.
A promotion is robust when it remains above the profitability threshold across reasonable cases. If the verdict changes with a small refund or LTV assumption, classify it as uncertain and gather more data rather than presenting a definitive winner.
Compare promotion variants on the same economic basis
When testing two offers, compare each with its own randomized control or use a properly randomized multi-arm experiment. Use the same payback window, proceeds definition, refund treatment, and uncertainty rule for every arm.
| Comparison axis | Decision use |
|---|---|
| Net contribution profit per eligible user | Primary ranking of economic value. |
| Incremental payer conversion | Shows whether an arm creates new payers. |
| Average proceeds per payer | Detects volume gained at the expense of value. |
| Discount cost | Quantifies margin surrendered. |
| Refund and chargeback rate | Finds offers that look strong before reversals. |
| Retention and repeat purchase | Captures delayed value or harm. |
| LTV and payback period | Tests whether the investment recovers in time. |
| Cannibalization | Shows whether full-price or other-tier sales moved rather than grew. |
| Platform and territory performance | Supports targeted rollout instead of a broad, low-margin launch. |
| Statistical uncertainty | Prevents ranking variants on noise. |
A deeper discount can increase transaction volume while reducing contribution. A smaller discount can produce fewer purchases but more profit per eligible player; the randomized net-proceeds result decides which trade-off wins.
Make the repeat, revise, or stop decision
- State the decision and hypothesis: record the offer, audience, expected incremental profit, and payback window.
- Define eligibility and randomization: freeze audience, holdout, geography, platform, price, exposure dates, and exclusions.
- Instrument the funnel: capture assignment, impression, click, attempt, success, entitlement, refund, chargeback, and repeat purchase.
- Calculate net proceeds: reconcile price, currency, store or payment fees, taxes, refunds, chargebacks, and adjustments.
- Estimate incrementality: compare treatment with control and report absolute lift, relative lift, confidence intervals, and cost per incremental payer.
- Measure delayed effects: update D1, D7, D30, or the game-appropriate horizon for retention, renewal, churn, and LTV.
- Check cannibalization: compare full-price sales, other tiers, and purchases shifted earlier without added long-term value.
- Segment carefully: review platform, territory, currency, payer history, acquisition source, and tenure only when samples support it.
- Run sensitivity cases: vary refund windows, attribution windows, LTV forecasts, and fixed-cost treatment.
- Document the decision: repeat, revise, or stop only when the pre-specified threshold and uncertainty rules are met.
Keep the assignment file, offer configuration, transaction extract, reconciliation logic, analysis code or queries, confidence-interval method, and final decision together. This audit trail makes a later promotion comparable and exposes changes in fees, prices, or eligibility that would otherwise be mistaken for player response.
Troubleshoot misleading results
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Gross sales rise but profit falls | Discount cost, fees, taxes, or refunds were omitted. | Recompute from collected net proceeds per eligible user. |
| Conversion is high only among exposed players | Exposure was not randomized; more motivated players saw the offer. | Use randomized assignment as the primary comparison. |
| Revenue events exceed store proceeds | Pending, failed, duplicated, or refunded transactions were counted. | Join transaction IDs to settlement and refund reports. |
| Control purchases appear unusually high | Control contamination or another campaign reached the holdout. | Flag contaminated players and run a documented sensitivity analysis. |
| Early profit disappears later | Refunds, chargebacks, churn, or reduced full-price buying arrived after the first read. | Wait for the stated payback and refund windows. |
| One segment looks spectacular | Small sample or many post-hoc segment searches. | Report uncertainty, pre-specified segments, and sample size. |
| Players received items but no purchase is recorded | Entitlement delivery and payment confirmation were not joined correctly. | Reconcile StoreKit or platform notifications with transaction records before classifying the event. |
Keep platform scale in perspective
Apple’s commerce page says developers have earned more than $300 billion through the App Store commerce system since its launch in 2008 and that the App Store receives more than half a billion visitors every week. Those are platform-scale context figures, current on Apple’s 2026 page, not benchmarks for the profit lift of an individual game promotion. No industry-wide profit-lift percentage should be substituted for your own treatment-versus-control result.
