Measure each PDF before and after processing in bytes, then calculate the size reduction from those two values. To estimate savings for an archive, sum the original and processed bytes for representative files—or use weighted group totals—and state the sample and assumptions. There is no single compression percentage that applies to every PDF: results depend on file contents and processing settings.

Which PDF compression metric should you use?

Record the original size and processed size using the same method and unit. Let O be the original file size in bytes and C the processed size in bytes. Three useful metrics describe different things:

  • Compression ratio: O ÷ C, conventionally written as a ratio such as 2:1. State this convention because “compression ratio” is not always used consistently.
  • Percentage size reduction: 100 × (O − C) ÷ O. This tells you what share of the original bytes was removed.
  • Remaining-size fraction: C ÷ O. Multiply by 100 to express the processed file as a percentage of its original size.

For example, if a processed file is half the size of its original, the original-to-processed ratio is 2:1, the reduction is 50%, and 50% of the original size remains. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a predicted or typical result. Adobe Acrobat’s Audit space usage feature can show what contributes to a PDF’s size; the two total file sizes are still the inputs for these calculations.

Keep the calculations in bytes. If you present results in MB or GB, identify whether you use decimal units (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes) or binary units (1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes) and apply that convention consistently. An operating system’s rounded size display is fine for a rough estimate, but label it as approximate rather than mixing it with exact byte counts.

How do you estimate storage savings across a PDF archive?

For every file you process, record its original bytes (Oᵢ) and processed bytes (Cᵢ). If you process the entire archive, add the values across all files:

  1. Original total: ΣOᵢ
  2. Processed total: ΣCᵢ
  3. Estimated bytes saved: ΣOᵢ − ΣCᵢ
  4. Estimated reduction: 100 × (ΣOᵢ − ΣCᵢ) ÷ ΣOᵢ

When processing every PDF is impractical, group files with similar characteristics—such as scanned pages, image-rich brochures, and text-first reports—and sample within each group. Estimate each group’s outcome from its sample, then combine groups using their file counts and original byte totals. Record the number of files sampled, how they were selected, the file classes represented, and the assumption that the sample represents the rest of its group.

Use total-byte weighting for an archive-level percentage rather than taking a simple average of each file’s percentage reduction. A 2 MB document and a 200 MB document should not have equal influence on a storage estimate just because each is one file.

Describe the result as an estimate of file bytes, not automatically as a forecast of billed storage or physical disk capacity. Actual storage use or charges can depend on a provider’s allocation, replication, retention, deduplication, and billing rules. Adobe describes PDF optimization as a way to save storage costs, but your storage system’s own rules determine how a file-byte estimate translates into capacity or cost.

What in a PDF affects the result?

PDFs can contain images, text, fonts, forms, comments, and structural data in different proportions. Adobe Acrobat’s Audit space usage report provides byte sizes and shares of total size for several elements, including those categories. Use it to identify what dominates a sample file before selecting settings.

  • Image-heavy scans: image resolution and encoding may be significant factors in size. Changes that reduce image data can also reduce visual detail.
  • Text-first documents: stream or structural data may matter more than image settings, depending on the file.
  • Forms, comments, bookmarks, and accessibility features: check whether optimization settings preserve the elements your workflow requires.

Adobe notes that PDF settings affect image quality, font handling, color management, compatibility, and file size. Its documentation also describes object-level compression as controlling structural information such as bookmarks and accessibility features. A smaller byte count alone does not establish that a document remains suitable for its intended use.

How should you compare compression methods?

Apply each method to copies of the same representative PDFs. Record the tool and version, settings, output size, and—if it matters to the workload—elapsed time. Check the processed files for the properties your readers or systems depend on:

  • Final bytes and percentage reduction
  • Visual quality at the intended screen and print sizes
  • Text search, forms, links, comments, bookmarks, and accessibility features that matter
  • Compatibility with required PDF readers and versions
  • Whether the transformation is lossless or lossy
  • Processing time and batch effort

Adobe’s PDF creation documentation describes Flate compression as lossless and JPEG as lossy, with outcomes depending on settings. Adobe’s compression workflow offers a choice of compression level and aims to retain document quality while reducing file size; that stated goal is not a substitute for checking your own files.

qpdf’s documentation lists options for stream compression, generalized decoding, recompressing Flate data, compression levels, object streams, and limited image optimization. It says qpdf does not resample images and does not otherwise modify content, except for possible DCT recompression in the described optimization case. This distinguishes structural and stream processing from workflows that down-sample or otherwise change image information.

Ghostscript cautions that its pdfwrite output is not guaranteed to be smaller: “The first thing to understand is that there is no guarantee that processing a PDF file with Ghostscript and the pdfwrite output device will produce a smaller file.” Its PDF optimization article explains that processing can produce a more verbose representation. Measure the result and keep the original until you have checked the processed file’s quality and required content.

Why did my PDF get larger after optimization?

Optimization does not guarantee a smaller output. Ghostscript’s warning reflects one possible outcome: the processed file may use a more verbose representation. Results also depend on the PDF’s contents and the settings used, so an operation that helps one file may not help another.

  1. Compare exact original and processed byte counts using the same measurement method.
  2. Check the tool, version, and settings used, then confirm they match the intended optimization task.
  3. Inspect the file’s composition—for example, with Acrobat’s Audit space usage report—to see which elements account for its size.
  4. Check visual quality, compatibility, and workflow-critical features before deciding whether to keep the processed copy.
  5. If the output is larger or unsuitable, retain the original and test a different method or settings on a copy.

Is there a typical percentage of PDF compression savings?

No broadly representative published benchmark establishes a typical saving for mixed PDF collections. Do not use a single percentage as a promise or apply a figure from one file to an archive with different contents. Calculate the result from representative files and report the sample, settings, and assumptions. Historical examples of image-compression behavior are format-specific and are not predictions for a present-day mixed PDF archive.
