Measure a multirotor as a complete, documented system—not as an airframe with a guessed flight-time rating. Weigh the aircraft ready for takeoff, identify the payload separately, calibrate a genuine voltage-and-current monitor against reference instruments, log the electrical data, and define an endurance endpoint before flying. Report the battery, flight profile, reserve, weather, and site conditions with every result.
That process produces a repeatable measurement. It does not produce one universal “minutes of flight” number: payload, wind, elevation, temperature, battery condition, sensor accuracy, pilot behavior, and the chosen reserve all change the outcome.
Why a single flight-time number is misleading
“How long will it fly with this payload?” has no useful answer until the test conditions are specified. A manufacturer’s hover figure, a best-case bench estimate, and a field flight to a battery warning are different measurements. They may use different takeoff masses, battery states, weather, control inputs, and stopping points.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Payload is only one portion of the mass being lifted. The tested mass also includes the frame, motors, propellers, landing gear, avionics, wiring, battery, cameras, gimbals, radio equipment, power monitor, and any temporary test hardware. Adding a sensor or a longer cable can change the result. If those items are not recorded, another person cannot reproduce the test or explain a disagreement between two aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration identifies payload, wind, elevation, and temperature as flight-time factors. Battery age and state, the flight profile, and the reserve selected by the operator add further variation. Treat an endurance result as a measurement of one configuration under stated conditions, not as a permanent specification for every flight.
Define exactly what you are measuring
Separate payload mass from complete takeoff mass
Use a scale to measure the aircraft in its ready-to-fly state and record the payload as a separate value. The available guidance establishes the need to report these masses but does not prescribe a particular scale type or standardized weighing procedure. Use a scale with enough capacity and resolution for your aircraft, keep the aircraft level, and repeat the weighing if the reading moves.
- Complete takeoff mass: everything lifted at motor start, including the battery and measurement equipment.
- Payload mass: the mission equipment or carried item whose effect you want to evaluate.
- Test hardware: power modules, current shunts, telemetry adapters, cameras, and cables added only for measurement.
Do not call an aircraft “carrying 1 kg” if the quoted figure excludes the battery, gimbal, or power monitor. State whether the payload includes its mounting hardware and cables.

Before a comparison, identify the airframe, motor and propeller models, firmware version, relevant flight-controller settings, battery identity and condition, and every carried device. Keep wiring, sensor placement, camera configuration, and propellers unchanged between trials. A propeller change, a different battery, or a firmware setting that alters motor output can invalidate a direct comparison even when the payload mass is identical.
| Item to record | What to write down | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Aircraft | Frame, motors, propellers, flight controller, firmware and relevant configuration | Motor efficiency, control behavior, and telemetry depend on the installed system. |
| Mass | Complete takeoff mass, payload mass, and any test hardware | Thrust demand follows total lifted mass, not payload alone. |
| Battery | chemistry or type, nominal voltage, capacity, identifier, age, charge state, and condition | Two batteries with the same label can deliver different voltage under load. |
| Instrumentation | Voltage/current sensor, wiring location, logger, and calibration references | Sensor placement and calibration determine whether the power data is trustworthy. |
| Environment | Wind, elevation, temperature, and test site | Air density and operating conditions change flight time and current demand. |
Install a real voltage and current monitor
Use a power module, ESC telemetry, or another genuine voltage-and-current monitor supported by the flight stack. A flight controller cannot infer accurate electrical consumption from throttle position alone. The monitor must be in the electrical path or receive a measured telemetry value, and its range must match the battery and expected current.
Check the hardware ratings
Ratings are specific to a module, not a universal property of “a power sensor.” ArduPilot’s documentation for a typical 3DR-style resistive-shunt power module gives an example of 18 V maximum input and 60 A measurement capability, despite a stated 90 A maximum rating. The same documentation warns that continuous high current can create destructive heat and says vendor limits should be confirmed. Use the manufacturer’s limits for your actual module, connectors, wire gauge, and cooling; do not transfer those example values to another sensor.
Choose a handheld voltmeter or power analyzer that is rated for the battery voltage and expected current. Check connector polarity and secure all high-current connections before arming. A meter used only for a brief calibration check is not a substitute for a properly rated in-flight sensor.

Calibrate voltage against a reference
Mission Planner’s power-monitor guidance describes selecting a supported sensor (or “Other” when appropriate), entering the sensor parameters, and validating the reported voltage against a handheld voltmeter or power analyzer. Perform the check at the point measured by the flight controller, because voltage drop in wiring can make the controller-side value differ from the battery terminals.
- Charge the battery to the intended test state and connect it through the installed monitor.
- With the system powered safely, measure voltage with the reference meter at the same electrical point used by the monitor.
- Open the flight stack’s battery or power-monitor setup and select the actual sensor type or the documented custom parameters.
- Adjust the voltage multiplier, divider, or calibration value until the displayed value agrees with the reference within the tolerance specified for your equipment.
- Repeat the check with the aircraft drawing a representative load. Record both the no-load and loaded readings if the difference is significant.
Save the calibration settings in the aircraft record. A voltage value that is correct on the bench but wrong under load can shift the low-battery trigger and distort energy calculations.
Calibrate current over the sensor’s useful range
Compare the monitor’s current reading with a power analyzer or another traceable reference while the aircraft draws a controlled, representative load. Follow the sensor manufacturer’s range and procedure. ArduPilot notes that most current sensors are not very accurate below 3 A and describes around 10 A as a typical calibration point; Hall-effect monitors are identified as an exception. Those are documentation cautions, not universal settings. Pick a calibration point where your sensor is accurate and where the aircraft’s expected operating range is represented.
- Confirm the sensor’s maximum continuous and peak current ratings.
- Place the reference analyzer so it measures the same current path as the flight-controller sensor.
- Apply a stable load near the aircraft’s normal operating range without exceeding motor, battery, wiring, or sensor limits.
- Compare the displayed current with the reference and adjust the scale, offset, or sensor parameter specified by the manufacturer.
- Check a second current level, including a low-load value if your mission includes hovering or loitering there. Record any remaining error.
Do not calibrate at a current that is below the sensor’s accuracy region and then assume the result is valid at high load. Conversely, never create a dangerous high-current condition merely to reach a nominal calibration number.
Do not substitute a synthetic current estimate
ArduPilot documents a throttle-derived synthetic-current estimate and explicitly warns: “Multicopter and QuadPlane VTOL mode current estimates are inaccurate and not recommended for use.” Do not use that estimate as a multirotor power measurement. A returned consumed-mAh value can help you check calibration, but it is not an independent measurement when it was generated from the same unverified estimate.
Log voltage, current, power, and energy
Capture the complete time history
Retain the flight log rather than recording only a starting and ending voltage. Instantaneous electrical power is:
P(t) = V(t) × I(t)
Because voltage falls and current changes with throttle, maneuvering, wind, and battery condition, the useful quantity is the time history. If the logger samples at regular intervals, calculate energy by summing each power sample multiplied by its time interval:

E ≈ Σ[Vi × Ii × Δt]
State the units and integration method. Voltage in volts, current in amperes, and time in seconds produce joules; integrating in hours produces watt-hours. If samples are irregular, use each sample’s actual time interval rather than assuming a fixed rate.

Use consumed capacity as a calibration check
After the flight, compare the flight controller’s consumed-mAh estimate with the amount required to recharge the battery using a charger that reports returned capacity. This is a practical consistency check, not an independent energy standard: charger efficiency, balancing behavior, cutoff settings, and battery temperature affect the returned value. If the two figures disagree systematically, revisit voltage and current calibration, sensor placement, and logger settings.
Record battery state correctly
Write down the start condition (for example, the charge state or measured starting voltage), the battery identifier, and the endpoint condition. Do not compare a flight started immediately after charging with one started after a different rest period without noting that difference. If a battery has been aged, repaired, or repeatedly used at high current, identify it rather than grouping it with a new pack.
Design a repeatable endurance test
Choose the endpoint before takeoff
Endurance is the elapsed time from a defined start to a defined endpoint. Possible endpoints include landing at a planned reserve, reaching a specified remaining-capacity threshold, or entering a configured battery failsafe. Select an endpoint that leaves the reserve required by your operating rules and risk assessment. A failsafe action is a safety boundary, not a target that every flight should deliberately reach.
ArduPilot supports configurable low- and critical-battery actions. The sample threshold shown in documentation is an example configuration, not a universal target. Verify the actual low and critical thresholds, actions, delay settings, and return-to-home behavior in the firmware and vehicle configuration you use.
Specify the flight profile
Write the profile before flying so the pilot or automation can repeat it:
- Takeoff and climb altitude.
- Hover, cruise, loiter, or mission segments and their durations.
- Speed, heading, and maneuver pattern.
- Use of landing gear, lights, gimbal motion, payload actuation, and other loads.
- Start condition and the exact event that starts the timer.
- Endpoint event and the action taken immediately afterward.
A stationary hover test answers a different question from a forward-flight mission. If you need both, report them as separate profiles rather than averaging them into one figure.

Control environmental conditions
Record wind speed and direction as well as gusts when possible, site elevation, air temperature, and precipitation or other conditions that affect operation. Wind changes both aerodynamic load and the distance or time required for a mission. Elevation and temperature alter air density, battery behavior, and cooling. The FAA’s identification of payload, wind, elevation, and temperature as flight-time factors is a reason to report these variables, not a promise that one correction formula will make every flight comparable.
Repeat the trial
Run multiple flights with the same configuration, payload, battery condition, profile, and endpoint. Record every elapsed time, not only the longest. Report the number of trials and the spread or range. If one flight includes a gust, a warning, a pilot intervention, or an unexpected failsafe, mark it rather than silently combining it with normal runs.

Report endurance with its conditions attached
A clear result names the endpoint in the same sentence as the time. For example, describe the elapsed time until landing at the planned reserve, then list the takeoff mass, payload, battery, profile, and weather in the accompanying table. Do not label a best-case hover time as expected field endurance.
Report electrical quantities separately
Give average and peak current when they answer the reader’s question, but retain the full log for analysis. Include starting and ending voltage, integrated energy or consumed capacity, sample rate, and the calibration references used. If a value is unavailable, say “not stated” rather than filling the gap with a nominal battery label.
| Result | Minimum information beside it |
|---|---|
| Endurance | Start event, endpoint, elapsed time, flight profile, takeoff mass, payload, battery, reserve/failsafe behavior, and conditions |
| Average current | Time window, flight segment, sensor type, calibration method, and whether current was logged or estimated |
| Peak current | Sampling rate, duration or filtering, operating event, and sensor rating |
| Energy consumed | Voltage/current source, integration method, units, time interval, and endpoint |
| Consumed mAh | Flight-controller estimate, calibration status, and charger-return comparison if performed |
Use a test record another operator can audit
Keep the raw flight log, calibration notes, scale readings, battery identifier, and weather record together. Note firmware changes, propeller damage, battery swelling, connector heating, or any abnormal warning. A short narrative explaining an excluded trial is more useful than a polished average that hides a failure.

Two results are comparable only when their major conditions and endpoints match. Use the following axes for every comparison:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Mass | Are complete takeoff mass and payload mass both reported? Does one configuration include a heavier sensor, gimbal, or wiring set? |
| Battery | Are type, capacity, age, state, and identifier equivalent? Was the same reserve used? |
| Measurement | Are voltage and current measured by calibrated monitors with comparable sampling and placement? |
| Profile | Did both aircraft hover, cruise, loiter, or fly the same mission at the same speed and altitude? |
| Endpoint | Did both tests stop at the same planned reserve or failsafe condition? |
| Environment | Were wind, elevation, and temperature similar or explicitly qualified? |
| Repetition | How many trials were run, and how much did the results vary? |
If one cell differs, describe the result as a measurement under different conditions rather than a performance ranking. A lighter aircraft may fly longer simply because it carries less equipment; that does not establish superior efficiency for an equal payload.

Answering “How much payload can my multirotor carry?”
Payload capacity is not a single number independent of endurance. Adding mass raises thrust demand and usually raises current, reducing the time available before the chosen reserve. Determine a useful payload limit by testing the complete aircraft at several payload masses while holding the battery, profile, endpoint, and conditions as constant as practical.
- Measure the empty ready-to-fly mass and establish the payload attachment method.
- Add a known payload increment and reweigh the complete takeoff configuration.
- Check that motors, propellers, battery, frame, landing gear, wiring, and power monitor remain within their ratings.
- Run the defined profile to the defined reserve, recording current, voltage, temperature, and handling observations.
- Stop increasing payload when the aircraft cannot meet the required endurance, reserve, control margin, thermal limit, or operational rule.
The resulting limit is mission-specific. State whether it is the maximum mass that can lift off, the mass that meets a minimum endurance, or the mass allowed by a thermal and control margin. Those are different claims.
Troubleshoot inconsistent or implausible measurements
Voltage disagrees with a handheld meter
- Confirm that both instruments measure at the same electrical point.
- Check the configured sensor type and voltage-divider or multiplier value.
- Inspect connectors, grounds, and wiring for voltage drop or intermittent contact.
- Repeat the comparison under a representative load, not only with motors stopped.
Current reads zero, too low, or jumps
- Verify that the current sensor is installed in the correct conductor and direction.
- Check offset and scale calibration at a current inside the sensor’s specified range.
- Remember ArduPilot’s caution that most sensors are less accurate below 3 A; do not judge low-load accuracy from a nominal high-current setting alone.
- Compare with a properly rated power analyzer and inspect for loose high-current connections.
Consumed mAh does not match recharge capacity
- Check voltage and current calibration independently.
- Confirm that the log covers the entire flight and that the endpoint is identical between runs.
- Account for charger cutoff, balancing, battery temperature, and the fact that returned capacity is a check rather than a laboratory energy standard.
- Do not “fix” a multirotor result by enabling the throttle-derived synthetic-current estimate that ArduPilot says is inaccurate and not recommended for multicopter modes.
Flight times vary widely
- Compare wind, gusts, temperature, elevation, and battery state before blaming the aircraft.
- Check for profile differences such as extra climbing, faster cruise, payload movement, or gimbal activity.
- Look for propeller damage, motor temperature changes, connector heating, or a battery with increased internal resistance.
- Report the variation and number of trials instead of selecting only the longest flight.
Safety boundaries for power testing
Calibration and endurance testing combine rotating machinery, high current, and a battery capable of releasing substantial energy. Secure the aircraft for static-load checks, keep people clear of propellers, and use a test setup appropriate to the battery chemistry and current. Never exceed the continuous or peak rating of the power module, analyzer, connectors, wiring, ESCs, motors, or battery. The example 3DR-style module limits cited in ArduPilot documentation are not permission to operate another module at those values.
Watch for heat in the power module, shunt, connectors, wiring, ESCs, motors, and battery. A reading that looks electrically plausible can still be unsafe if a resistive shunt or connector is overheating. End the test for abnormal temperature, swelling, smell, smoke, unstable voltage, loss of telemetry, or a battery warning that does not match the planned procedure.

What a defensible conclusion looks like
A defensible conclusion does not promise a universal flight time. It says what the measured aircraft did, with which payload and battery, under which profile and conditions, to which reserve or failsafe endpoint, and how many times the test was repeated. It also distinguishes measured voltage/current data from a synthetic estimate and identifies calibration checks.
That level of detail turns “our multirotor flies for 25 minutes” into a result another operator can interpret: a specific configuration, mass, battery, environment, electrical measurement method, and safety endpoint. It is the difference between a reproducible engineering measurement and a number that cannot guide a real mission.
