To measure motorcycle exhaust noise safely, use a sound level meter and the test procedure that matches the motorcycle and purpose. For stationary exhaust tests, SAE identifies J2825 for on-highway motorcycles and J1287 for off-highway motorcycles. Their procedures are not interchangeable, and a stationary exhaust reading does not establish the motorcycle’s total sound while operating.

For an informal check, control the location, meter settings and microphone position, keep people clear of hot exhaust and moving parts, and avoid unnecessary high-RPM runs. For an inspection or legal question, first confirm the full current procedure and your local rules; there is no universal motorcycle exhaust dBA limit or RPM target.

Choose the right test before taking a reading

SAE identifies J2825 as a recommended practice for stationary exhaust sound measurement on on-highway motorcycles; its listing says it was reaffirmed on July 17, 2020. SAE recommends J1287 for off-highway motorcycles. The public J2825 listing does not expose all of its procedure, so do not assume that geometry or engine-speed details from another test apply to it.

A stationary exhaust test measures sound under a specified stationary condition. SAE J1287 expressly says, “This test does not evaluate total motorcycle sound during operation.” If the question is whether a motorcycle meets a road-use or inspection requirement, identify the authority’s prescribed test rather than treating a stationary reading as proof of overall compliance.

Digital Sound Level Meter,Sound Meter for Classroom Home Street,30-130dBA dB Meter to Measure Noise,Noise Decibel Reader,Audio Sound Tester,Sound Test equipmetent,Sound Measurement Device (30-130dBA)
  • 【Widely Used】The noise meter is the use of environmental sound level instrument, can be widely used in such as factories, workshops, schools, residential, office areas, traffic roads, audio and other occasions of sound level measurement. Also suitable for noise engineering, product quality control, health, prevention and control.
  • 【Accurate Measurement】Measuring Range:30~130dB ;Accuracy:±1.5dB(94dB@1KHz);Display Resolution:0.1dB
  • 【A Weighted Measurement】 A Weighted network (automatic switching range display)
  • 【Fast/Slow mode selection】Press the MODE key, you can convert the response speed of the noise meter, FAST fast, SLOW slow
  • 【MAX/MIN Measurement】Press RANGE key to measure the maximum value of MAX and minimum value of MIN.A maximum duration of more than 3 seconds is recorded, with a normal test sampling rate of 0.5 seconds. The maximum error is ± 5%.

Set up safely and control the surroundings

  • Work outdoors in a clear area, away from reflective walls and other surfaces that can affect sound readings. Follow the environment requirements in the applicable full procedure.
  • Stabilize the motorcycle and keep the operator clear of the exhaust outlet, hot components and moving parts. Keep bystanders out of the exhaust stream.
  • Place the meter microphone in position without holding or attaching a rigid distance tool to the meter during the reading.
  • Use a windscreen outdoors: wind turbulence at the microphone can create a falsely high reading. Avoid testing in gusty conditions.
  • Keep high-RPM runs to the minimum needed for the applicable procedure. Wear hearing protection when appropriate, especially if the sound is loud or repeated.

OSHA advises carrying and wearing hearing protection when noise approaches 85 dBA. That figure is an occupational eight-hour time-weighted average action level used for hearing-conservation provisions, not a motorcycle exhaust limit or a guarantee that a shorter exposure is safe. See OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.95.

Position the meter for the reproduced J1287 setup

The following geometry comes from a reproduced appendix of SAE J1287, not from the public J2825 listing. Use it only when it is appropriate to the test and confirm the full current standard before treating a result as official.

  • 【MAX/MIN Measurement, Date Hold】 The sound pressure level (SPL) meter has Max or Min measurement values to represent the maximum/minimum (high/low peak) value of the sound produced within a certain time, and the data hold function can freeze the current reading based on the sound measurement according to individual needs
  • 【Easy Use and Feature Packed】 The non-slip side design ensures that the portable noise meter fits easily in the hand. TS-501B SPL meter is a battery-operated noise meter that comes with three durable batteries and has an automatic power-off function to extend battery life. A low battery indicator will appear on the screen when the battery is low to remind the user to replace the battery in time
  • 【What’s in the Box】1x TS-501B Decibel Meter, 3x AAA Batteries, 1x User Manual, 1x Carry Case. TopTes sound level meter with a 3-year Warranty and lifetime technical support. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns
  • Set the sound level meter to A-weighting and preferably Slow response.
  • Place the microphone 0.5 ± 0.01 m behind the exhaust outlet, within 0.01 m of the outlet’s height.
  • Set the microphone at 45 ± 10 degrees to the motorcycle’s direction of travel. Keep its axis parallel to the ground and orient it for free-field response as specified by the microphone manufacturer.
  • Measure each side with an exhaust outlet and report the loudest side.
  • Keep the ambient sound level, including wind, at least 10 dB below the motorcycle reading. The reproduced appendix specifies wind speed under 9 m/s; lower, steadier wind is preferable for reliable field readings.

These values are from reproduced J1287 text in a U.S. government technical appendix. The procedure calls for a steady-state reading at its specified engine speed and recording that RPM. The correct target RPM depends on the procedure and motorcycle; do not substitute a generic figure.

Take and record the measurement

  1. Identify whether the motorcycle and test purpose call for SAE J2825, SAE J1287, or a local inspection procedure. Obtain the full current procedure and check whether it specifies meter accuracy, calibration, engine speed and environmental conditions.
  2. Set up the motorcycle and meter in a clear outdoor location. Apply the microphone placement and meter settings required by that procedure.
  3. Check that background sound and wind meet the procedure’s conditions. If wind or other noise is interfering, postpone the test rather than relying on an unstable reading.
  4. Run the engine only at the specified condition and RPM, allowing the sound to reach the required steady state. Keep clear of the outlet and stop if the setup becomes unsafe.
  5. Record the meter reading, meter settings, test procedure, engine RPM and conditions. Under the reproduced J1287 setup, test every exhaust-outlet side and report the loudest side.

A handheld sound level meter is the appropriate equipment category for a measurement intended to follow a procedure. Check that its accuracy, settings and calibration support match the applicable standard. A phone app may help with informal comparisons, but the cited sources do not establish that a smartphone is equivalent to compliant test instrumentation. A compatible acoustic calibrator and microphone windscreen can support consistent measurements; they do not replace following the prescribed method.

Understand what the number can—and cannot—tell you

There is no single legal dBA limit established by the sources cited here. Limits and test methods vary by jurisdiction and may depend on the motorcycle’s certification, age, class or inspection context. Check with the relevant transport or inspection authority for both the limit and the required procedure.

An informal reading can help compare changes made to the same motorcycle when the setup and conditions are held consistent. It is not universal evidence of legal compliance: a different microphone position, RPM, environment or procedure can produce a result that is not comparable. OSHA’s 85 dBA occupational action level is unrelated to motorcycle pass/fail criteria.
