Measure current at the battery input when you want to know how long the complete device will run; isolate the ESP32 module’s supply when you want to characterize the module itself. A development board can draw power through its regulator, USB interface, LEDs, or other circuits while the ESP32 sleeps, so its reading is not the module’s deep-sleep current. Capture a waveform across sleep and wake periods: a low sleep floor alone cannot explain battery life if the device wakes often or stays active too long.
Choose the measurement boundary first
Decide whether you are investigating the whole product’s battery drain or the ESP32 module’s own consumption. These are different measurements and should be reported separately.
- Whole-device battery life: Put the meter or power analyzer in series with the battery supply path, leaving the board and its real peripherals connected. This includes everything powered by that path.
- Module characterization: Isolate the module’s supply from the development board’s other circuits. Espressif’s module-measurement guide uses ESP-ProG for flashing and a separate suitable ammeter for measurement. It cautions that measuring a module on an intact development board can include current from board circuits that remain active in deep sleep.
When reporting a result, name the boundary: for example, “complete board at battery input” or “isolated ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 module.” Do not label a board-level reading as “the ESP32 deep-sleep current.”
Select an instrument that can capture both sleep and wake
Deep sleep may draw several microamps while wake and active periods draw milliamps. A meter must measure both without missing a short transition or disturbing the device’s supply. Ordinary meters can be too slow to change ranges and can have enough internal resistance, or burden voltage, to cause unstable operation.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
- Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
- Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
- Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
- Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
- Look for microamp-level measurement, enough range for wake current, low burden voltage, and range switching fast enough for the sleep-to-active transition.
- Prefer a device that records a waveform or logs current over time. That makes sleep level, active bursts, cycle period, and energy per cycle visible rather than reducing the test to one display reading.
- Espressif names the Joulescope and Nordic Power Profiler Kit II (PPK2) as suitable options. Espressif states that PPK2 resolution varies from 100 nA to 1 mA depending on the selected range; this describes its ranges, not a guarantee of accuracy under every setup.
A suitable handheld meter may be enough for a steady-state check, but do not rely on a single-range meter to characterize a device that alternates between microamp sleep and milliamp activity. If inserting the instrument causes resets, measure the voltage at the device and investigate burden voltage or wiring resistance.
Measure a repeatable sleep-and-wake cycle
- Document the hardware. Record the exact ESP32 family member, module, development-board model, supply input, and connected peripherals. Note whether the measurement includes the regulator, USB-to-UART/JTAG interface, status LEDs, sensors, charger, fuel gauge, and battery circuitry.
- Wire the chosen boundary. For battery drain, insert the instrument in series with the battery supply path and keep the real assembly connected. For module current, isolate the module supply from other board circuits.
- Run known firmware. Flash the ESP-IDF
deep_sleepexample or the application being investigated. In the cited Espressif example, the default interval between wakeups is 20 seconds; the interval can be changed in code. Serial output can confirm expected behavior, but debug hardware and its power path may affect a whole-board measurement. - Match the example’s configuration when comparing results. To reproduce Espressif’s cited bottom-current example, disable “Enable touch wake up” in the example configuration. Other wake sources, retained memory or peripherals, and application behavior can change current.
- Record multiple complete cycles. Capture sleep-floor current, active peak, wake duration, cycle period, and average current or energy per cycle. If possible, record the voltage at the device while the instrument is inserted.
- Compare equivalent setups. Keep the chip or module, supply voltage, wake sources, retained domains, firmware, and measurement boundary the same. Treat results from different boundaries or configurations as different measurements.
Read the trace to locate the battery drain
A waveform separates a persistent sleep load from energy spent waking and working. In Espressif’s ESP-IDF v6.1 guide, the example wakes every 20 seconds by default. Its documented ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 waveform shows 8.14 µA during deep sleep and about 23.88 mA while active. These are example results for that module and setup, not universal ESP32 values or expected development-board readings. See Espressif’s current-consumption measurement guide.

- CONVENIENT FEATURES: Test lead holders on the back of the meter, kickstand and optional magnetic hanger (Cat. Nos. 69445 or 69417) for hands-free operation
- High, nearly flat current through the sleep interval: Suspect something that remains powered, but first confirm whether the trace includes the complete board and battery circuitry. Disconnect external peripherals one at a time, then inspect the actual board schematic and power tree.
- Low sleep floor with frequent spikes: The wake cadence may be driving average consumption. Check the configured timer and other wake sources against the intended schedule.
- Low floor with long bursts: The device may spend too long active after waking. Measure burst duration and inspect the application’s work and return-to-sleep path.
- Unexpected resets after adding the meter: Check voltage at the device during both sleep and wake. The meter, leads, or connections may be dropping enough voltage to disrupt operation.
Use average current or integrated energy across full cycles to estimate battery use; do not extrapolate from the minimum sleep reading when active periods are part of normal operation.
Check likely board-level loads one at a time
If the complete assembly’s sleep current is high, isolate the loads systematically rather than assuming the ESP32 chip is responsible. Disconnect external devices one at a time and watch how the trace changes. Then use the specific board’s schematic and power tree to check:

- Regulator quiescent current and other always-on power circuitry.
- USB-to-UART or USB/JTAG interfaces and their supply paths.
- Power or status LEDs.
- Chargers, fuel gauges, and sensors with standby current.
- Pull-ups, GPIO-connected circuits, and external resistors.
These are diagnostic possibilities, not confirmed drains on every board. The actual board design and what remains connected determine which ones matter.
Use model-specific fixes, not universal GPIO advice
Some sleep-current problems depend on the exact module and circuit. Espressif specifically advises calling rtc_gpio_isolate() before deep sleep for ESP32-WROVER-E/IE modules in the documented case where an external resistor is connected to GPIO12. Do not apply that call indiscriminately to other modules: Espressif warns that results may be abnormal.

| Figure | What it describes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 10 µA deep-sleep consumption | Espressif’s ESP32 Series Datasheet v5.3 feature figure; it is series-level, not a complete-board result. | Use as a reference point, not a guaranteed reading for every chip, module, board, or configuration. Check the exact model’s ESP32 datasheet. |
| 8.14 µA in deep sleep; about 23.88 mA active | Espressif’s ESP-IDF v6.1 guide waveform for an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 module under its example conditions, accessed in 2026. | Use to understand the sleep-to-active range and the need for an instrument that can capture both states; do not generalize it to other modules or boards. |
| 20 seconds between wakeups | Default interval in the cited ESP-IDF deep_sleep example, as described in the v6.1 guide; it is configurable in code. |
Confirm the interval in the firmware you actually test. |
The ESP32 family datasheet figure and a module waveform are not interchangeable specifications. A discrepancy is not automatically a fault: confirm the exact variant, test boundary, voltage, wake configuration, retained domains, and instrument behavior before drawing conclusions. Espressif’s light-sleep example README concerns light sleep, which is a different mode and should not be used as a deep-sleep current target.
