Measure a concrete supercapacitor by charging and discharging it at a controlled, known current while logging voltage over time. Use the discharge trace to calculate capacitance across a stated voltage interval; define charge time as the time to reach a specified target voltage from a stated starting condition. Neither result is meaningful without the cell design, current, voltage window and normalization basis.
What you are measuring
“Concrete battery” is an imprecise label for the device considered here: a cement-based or carbon–cement supercapacitor. It is an electrochemical cell, not a homogeneous block of concrete. A typical research arrangement has two electrolyte-saturated electrodes, an electrolyte-wetted insulating separator between them and conductive current collectors. Its composition, dimensions and electrical contacts all affect the result. See the [PNAS carbon–cement supercapacitor study] and the [2024 RSC review of concrete-based energy storage].
Capacitance, charge time and energy are separate measurements. Capacitance is reported in farads (F); charge time is an elapsed time under specified conditions; energy is reported in joules (J) or watt-hours (Wh). A device can have a measured capacitance without that number, by itself, telling you how quickly it charges or how much energy it delivers over its usable voltage range.
Prepare and document the cell
Before testing, describe the specimen well enough for another person to understand what the measurement represents. Concrete-supercapacitor studies vary in materials and test arrangements, so there is no single recipe or universally applicable voltage limit. The 2024 RSC review describes one configuration; it should not be treated as a required design for every test.

- Additional Tips - Please take off the cap before using the test leads. Check the manual for more usage information.
- Record each electrode’s area and thickness, the cement mix and conductive-additive composition, and the arrangement of the cell.
- Identify the electrolyte and its concentration, separator, current collectors, and any method used to maintain contact or pressure.
- Record conditioning and cycle number, the test temperature if controlled, and the current and voltage limits used.
- Choose a safe voltage window for this specific cell based on its design and applicable protocol. Do not borrow a limit from a different cement formulation or an ordinary commercial capacitor.
Measure capacitance with controlled-current discharge
Galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD) applies a controlled current while voltage is recorded against time. Charge the cell under a stated current, then discharge it under a stated current over a defined voltage interval. For a selected approximately linear portion of the discharge trace, calculate full-device capacitance as:
C = I × Δt / ΔV
Here, I is the discharge-current magnitude in amperes, Δt is the time in seconds across the selected interval, and ΔV is the voltage change in volts. The result is in farads because one ampere-second is one coulomb and one coulomb per volt is one farad. The 2020 review on measuring and reporting supercapacitor capacity discusses this current–time–voltage interval method and EN 62391-1. For formal standards compliance, consult the standard itself; the interval calculation alone does not establish compliance.

- Important Tips - This CM2K0R clamp meter can not test DC Current. To measure the AC Current you need to clamp the meter around one of the wires and not the whole power cord. Ensure the conductor to betested is in the center of the clamp head. The clamp Jaw is only used to measure current. Do not measure voltage by clamping the conductor being measured.
- Versatile Digital Clamp Meter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, AC Current, Capacitance, Resistance, Diode Continuity and Live Wire Tests. This clamp meter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues.
- Thoughtful Design - Support Data Hold, Max/Min, Auto Shut-off, low battery indicator and continuity buzzer. Includes Convenient features like Audial and Visual Alarm, LCD Backlit Screen and Flashlight make it easy to use. Two 1.5V AAA batteries are included in the package.
- Non-contact Voltage Testing - This Clamp Meter features non-contact voltage testing with sound and light alarm. When the Meter senses a weak AC signal, the green indicator light will come on and the buzzer will emit a slow, audible beep. when the Meter senses a strong AC signal, the red indicator light will come on and the buzzer will emit a quick beep.
- Enhanced Safety - The clamp meter has passed the environmental pollution degree 2 and overvoltage category III 600V safety standards. If you have any questions about the product, feel free to contact us! Our California-based support team will respond within 24 hours.
State the exact voltage endpoints used and whether an initial voltage drop was excluded from the interval. Use current magnitude consistently for this calculation. A reporting method intended for standard components should not silently be presented as a universal protocol for a custom concrete cell.
Define and report charge time
Charge time is not a fixed property independent of how the cell is tested. Report the elapsed time from a specified starting voltage or other starting condition until the terminal voltage reaches the stated target, under a stated current and voltage window. The measured time can change with current and with the specimen’s response.

- 🎁【6000 COUNTS TRUE RMS ACCURATELY DISPLAY】 Upgraded high accuracy chip and TRUE RMS (root mean square), provide a higher range and more accurate reading, this makes the T21D digital multimeter an excellent tool for electrical testing.
If the procedure switches from constant-current charging to a constant-voltage hold, report the hold separately. Also say whether the reported time includes any rest or stabilization period. A bare claim such as “charges in a certain number of minutes” cannot be interpreted or compared without those conditions.
Calculate energy without confusing it with capacitance
Ideal-capacitor estimate
For an ideal capacitor, the stored-energy estimate at voltage V is E = ½CV², where C is in farads and V is in volts, giving E in joules. For a voltage window from V₁ to V₂, use ΔE = ½C(V₂² − V₁²). This estimate assumes the chosen capacitance adequately represents the device across that window.

Energy delivered in a measured discharge
For energy delivered during a measured discharge, calculate instantaneous power from the voltage and current trace and integrate over time: E = ∫V(t)I(t)dt. State the sign convention and whether the result represents energy delivered to the load. The PNAS carbon–cement study includes GCD and cyclic-voltammetry characterization and analyzes energy over time; its analysis concerns its own device and protocol, not a universal performance figure.

For a normalized result, name the denominator: active-material mass, electrode mass, total cell mass, volume or area. Also clarify whether a figure describes one electrode or the assembled device. These bases are not interchangeable, and literature comparisons can mislead when they are omitted. The 2020 measurement review discusses capacity reporting and normalization; the 2026 Japan Cement Association/J-STAGE experimental study reports findings tied to its own mix designs and test conditions. Its reported differences involving carbon black and artificial seawater, and its three-layer configuration, are experimental results—not a generally established optimum or commercial-performance guarantee.
Equipment for a basic GCD measurement
A programmable DC bench supply or another controlled-current source can provide the test current, but the measurement also requires reliable voltage measurement and voltage-versus-time logging. A supply alone does not necessarily provide adequate measurement precision or data acquisition. Select equipment for the specimen’s voltage and current requirements; the GCD method is described in the 2025 review of cement-based supercapacitors and the PNAS study linked above.
