IGDB does not document an API call that accepts a scanned game cover and returns a visual match. Instead, search IGDB for likely game records, inspect their cover images, and check whether each cover is linked to the game itself or to a specific localization. Use the scan’s title, platform, region, language, edition wording, and artwork together to build and verify a shortlist.
What you need before you start
For this workflow, you need the cover scan and access to IGDB’s API. IGDB’s getting-started instructions say you need a Twitch account and a registered application; its request examples use a Client-ID and bearer access token. Follow the current setup instructions in the IGDB API getting started guide.
Before searching, note the clues visible on the physical cover. These are useful for your comparison, not official IGDB matching rules:
- Title and subtitle, including alternate spellings or abbreviations
- Platform branding, such as a console or computer-system logo
- Publisher or developer marks
- Region and language indicators
- Edition wording, such as a special or collector’s edition label
- Distinctive characters, artwork, or layout
How to find candidate IGDB records
1. Search names and title variants
Use IGDB’s documented search endpoint or the games endpoint to find records that could match the cover. Try the title as printed, visible subtitles, and meaningful spelling or wording variants. A text search creates candidates; it does not establish that a record represents the exact release shown on the scan.

2. Retrieve each candidate’s cover data
For each plausible game, inspect its cover record and compare the available image with your scan. IGDB describes the covers endpoint as “The cover art of games.” Cover records include an image identifier, dimensions, and URL, which help you retrieve and inspect the candidate artwork. 3. Check the localization relationship
Do not rule out a candidate just because you cannot find the relevant cover attached directly to the main game record. IGDB documents that a cover’s game field can be empty when the cover belongs to a game_localization. Follow that relationship to the localization record, then check its game and its name and region. The game_localizations endpoint documentation explains the related records.

This relationship can account for cover differences tied to a particular language or region. Compare the localization with the physical cover rather than treating the main game record as the only place a relevant cover can appear.
How to verify a likely match
Compare several independent clues before treating a candidate as a match. A similar illustration alone does not establish that the cover is for the same platform, regional release, language, or edition.

Keep ambiguous results as candidates. IGDB’s record relationships and cover images support comparison, but they do not by themselves prove that a particular physical edition is identical to the one represented in the database.
What to do if you want automatic image matching
The cited IGDB documentation describes text-based record search and cover retrieval; it does not document uploading a scan for a visual match. If you build an automated workflow, treat image recognition as a separate stage that proposes candidates, then validate those candidates against IGDB’s game, cover, and localization records. The documentation reviewed does not establish which OCR or visual-similarity method works best for this task, so do not assume an accuracy level without a directly relevant evaluation.

Keep image references maintainable
IGDB documents multiple image URL size variants and says removed or replaced images remain for 30 days before removal. An image URL should not be treated as a permanent identifier. Preserve the IGDB record identifiers you rely on and refresh image references when necessary. See the image reference for URL variants and image behavior.
