In YouTube Studio, select the intended event under Create > Go live > Manage, check its stream settings, start the encoder, and confirm that the preview appears for that event before clicking Go live. If you use the Live Streaming API, bind the broadcast ID to the stream ID with liveBroadcasts.bind, then verify the broadcast’s contentDetails.boundStreamId.
What the stream key does—and what it does not identify
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key lets an encoder authenticate and send an incoming audio/video feed. It does not identify a particular scheduled event. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Scheduled broadcast: The event viewers watch. In the API, it is a
liveBroadcastresource with its own ID, title, schedule, and status. - Stream: The incoming feed and its delivery settings. In the API, it is a
liveStreamresource with its own ID. - Stream key: A credential configured in the encoder, alongside the ingest URL, to send the feed to YouTube.
- Binding: The association between a broadcast and a stream. The API exposes the currently associated stream as
contentDetails.boundStreamId.
Do not infer which event is selected from a stream key’s label or value. Check the selected broadcast in Studio, or verify the resource binding through the API. Keep the key private.
Match the key to a scheduled broadcast in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then select Manage.
- Select the scheduled broadcast you intend to run. Check its title and scheduled details so you are working on the intended event. YouTube’s Live area provides access to current, upcoming, and past broadcasts. YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream
- Open that event’s stream settings. Check the selected stream key and the stream URL shown by YouTube.
- In your encoder, put YouTube’s stream URL in the server or ingest URL field and the corresponding key in the stream-key field. Do not swap them. You can select a custom key in YouTube for reuse if that suits your setup. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Start the encoder and send the feed. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room for the selected scheduled event. Once you have confirmed both the event and its preview, click Go live. YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream
If the preview is missing or appears with the wrong event selected, stop before going live. Re-select the intended broadcast and check the encoder’s URL/key pair. The key authenticates the feed; the event selection is a separate Studio step.

Match the broadcast and stream with the Live Streaming API
For API-managed streams, keep the broadcast ID, stream ID, and encoder credentials distinct. Google’s guide directs API users to call liveBroadcasts.bind to associate a broadcast with a stream. Google for Developers: YouTube Live Streaming API getting started guide

A broadcast can be bound to one stream at a time, while a stream can be bound to more than one broadcast. Reuse can therefore be appropriate for separate events at different times, but it does not automatically select the correct event for you. Check the stream resource’s current isReusable setting rather than assuming every stream is reusable. Google for Developers: liveBroadcasts.bind Google for Developers: liveStreams resource
Reset a key that may have been exposed
If someone else may have obtained the key, reset it in Live Control Room: open the Stream tab, find Stream key, choose Reset, and replace the stored key in your encoder with the new one. Resetting the key changes the encoder credential; it is not the same operation as binding a broadcast to a stream. After a reset or event change, verify the encoder configuration and the broadcast-to-stream association separately.
Troubleshoot a stream that is not on the intended event
| Symptom or mistake | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder is sending, but the wrong scheduled event is open | The selected broadcast title in Manage and the preview shown in Live Control Room | Select the intended scheduled event and confirm its preview before going live. |
| No preview appears | The event selected in Studio, plus the encoder’s server URL and key fields | Confirm the correct event is selected; then make sure the stream URL is in the server field and the key is in the stream-key field. |
| The key seems to “belong” to a different event | Whether you are treating the key as an event ID | Do not use the key string or label to identify the event. Check the event in Studio or inspect its API binding. |
| A recently reset key no longer works | Whether the encoder still stores the old key | Replace it with the newly reset key and send the feed again. |
| API points at the wrong incoming feed | The intended liveBroadcast.id, liveStream.id, and the broadcast’s boundStreamId |
Bind the intended IDs and read the broadcast resource again to verify the association. |
