In Playwright, pass a locator for the changing element in the screenshot’s mask option. Playwright covers the matched element’s bounding box with a solid color (pink by default), making that area consistent for a visual comparison while the rest of the page remains testable. Keep the locator narrow: changes inside the masked box will no longer be visible in that screenshot.
Mask a changing region in a Playwright screenshot
Use a stable locator for the volatile element and supply it to toHaveScreenshot(), which accepts screenshot options:

});Replace the example URL and test attribute with values from your page. Playwright’s Page API documents mask as an array of locators and notes that the option was added in v1.35. The default overlay is pink (#FF00FF); set maskColor if another solid color suits your review workflow. See the Playwright Page API.
Choose the locator carefully
Prefer a stable test attribute such as data-testid, or a semantic locator that uniquely identifies the changing content. Avoid positional selectors that may silently point to a different element after the page changes. If several independent elements vary, add each locator to the mask array.

A mask covers the matched element’s entire bounding box, not just the pixels that differ. If the element is oversized, overlaps neighboring content, or matches more than intended, the mask can conceal a genuine regression too. Inspect the resulting screenshot and diff to verify the covered area.
Masking and screenshot assertions
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference screenshot on the first run and compares subsequent captures with that reference. The mask is applied during capture, so the volatile area is hidden in the image being compared. This is different from fixing the page’s data: the comparison cannot reveal a change inside the masked box.

When to mask—and when to make the page deterministic
Masking is useful for content that is expected to vary and is not the subject of the visual check, such as a live timestamp, rotating promotion, or user-specific widget. If practical, prefer a deterministic test state or mock data. That lets the test check the component’s appearance rather than removing its visual evidence altogether.
- Mask only content whose variability is acceptable for this test.
- Keep the target element and its bounding box as small as practical.
- Review the screenshot and diff after adding or changing a mask.
- Refresh a baseline only after deciding that the visual change is intended; updating a reference does not prove the page is correct.
Keep the comparison environment consistent
Visual output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends using the same environment for baseline generation and comparison. Keep those conditions aligned before treating a diff as a page regression or changing a baseline. Other region-ignore approaches
Region controls are not identical across visual-testing tools. Compare how a tool selects the region, whether it overlays pixels at capture time or changes comparison behavior, whether it supports whole-page or component captures, and how it manages baseline review.

Troubleshoot masks and visual diffs
The changing area still causes diffs
- Confirm the locator matches the element at screenshot time and is included in the
maskarray passed to the screenshot assertion. - Check whether the changing pixels fall outside the element’s bounding box—for example, in a sibling, shadow, or overlay element. Add a targeted locator for the actual changing region if appropriate.
- Wait for the page to reach the state you intend to compare before capturing.
The mask hides too much
- Inspect the matched element’s dimensions and narrow the locator to the smallest relevant element.
- Check for duplicate locator matches or an ancestor container that includes neighboring content.
- Use deterministic data instead if you need to retain visual coverage of the changing component.
The page differs even though the mask is correct
Check that the baseline and comparison use the same browser, operating system, settings, and execution conditions. Rendering differences can arise from the environment, not only from application changes.

Can a Playwright mask hide more than the changed pixels?
Yes. It covers the matched element’s bounding box, so inspect the screenshot to ensure the box does not obscure neighboring content.
Does masking test whether the changing component still looks correct?
No. The masked area is hidden in the comparison. Use deterministic data or a separate test if you need visual coverage of that component.
