It can also apply effects from HTML attributes. The important caveat for new projects is that the official repository says CamanJS is no longer actively maintained, so check compatibility and security needs before adopting it.
What CamanJS does
CamanJS is a JavaScript image-manipulation library for HTML5 Canvas. It runs in browsers and Node.js and provides filters, presets, and an extension model for adding functionality. In a web page, its typical workflow is to load the library, select an image or canvas, apply operations, and render the result.
The project’s official repository lists version 4.1.1 as “Latest Stable,” but also says the project is no longer actively maintained. That label is not a guarantee of ongoing release, browser, or security support.
Apply filters with JavaScript
For the full library and its plugins, include caman.full.min.js. Alternatively, include caman.min.js and only the plugins you need. Then initialize the target element, chain image operations, and call render():

});In this example, the values are arguments to CamanJS filter methods; they are not a universal measurement of how bright or contrasty an image will look. Rendering is the point at which the requested changes are applied to the image. Use the completion callback when later work depends on the rendered result.

Apply a filter chain from HTML attributes
If the effect is fixed rather than controlled interactively, CamanJS supports a declarative data-caman attribute. The library can read the filter chain and apply it automatically at page load:

data-caman="saturation(-10) brightness(20) vignette('10%')">Attribute-based setup avoids writing a separate JavaScript callback for each static effect. Use the JavaScript API instead when an effect needs to respond to user input or application state.

Use HiDPI replacement images thoughtfully
CamanJS documents HiDPI support introduced in version 4. A data-caman-hidpi attribute can provide a higher-resolution replacement image, and data-caman-hidpi-disabled can disable that behavior. The higher-resolution source can preserve more detail on Retina or other high-density displays, but it also takes longer to render. Choose it when the visual gain matters enough to justify the extra processing time.
Fix cross-origin image errors
Browser security rules restrict reading or modifying pixels from an image loaded from another origin. If the image is hosted on a CDN or supplied by a user, the page cannot assume CamanJS may process it merely because the image is visible. The image must be same-origin, the remote server must return an appropriate CORS policy and the image must be loaded with the corresponding CORS configuration, or your application must fetch it through a proxy you control.

- Same-origin image: Load the image from the same origin as the page.
- Remote image with CORS: Confirm that the image server permits your page’s origin and that the browser request is configured for CORS.
- Remote image without CORS: Use a server-side proxy only if you can safely and lawfully retrieve that image; do not try to bypass the browser restriction in client-side code.
The CamanJS guide describes the browser security limitation. A failed canvas pixel operation is often a source-server or image-loading configuration issue, not a filter-chain problem.

CamanJS supports extending its filters through a separate plugins repository. The project’s CamanJS-Plugins repository contains functionality outside the core library, while its examples demonstrate slider-driven filters and preset effects.

Interactive controls let users vary an effect; a preset applies a repeatable collection of operations. Presets can make a visual treatment more consistent across images, but the same values may not look identical on every source image. Test with the kinds of images your page will handle.
Assess CamanJS before using it in a new project
The repository’s maintenance notice matters more than a “Latest Stable” label when evaluating a dependency. Before deploying CamanJS, check whether the package or CDN copy you plan to use fits your browser targets, build process, and security requirements. Consider whether your team can maintain or replace the dependency if a browser change or security issue appears.
It remains a documented option for Canvas-based effects, attribute-driven filter chains, and plugins. Its no-longer-actively-maintained status makes it a less certain choice for new production work that depends on ongoing compatibility and security updates.
