Plan for the largest amount of space needed during downloading and unpacking, not merely the size shown after installation. List every game, record each platform’s current free-space requirement, add the documented preload or patch overhead, then clean, move, selectively install, or expand storage in that order. Use an internal SSD or a console-certified expansion for games you play regularly; use external storage mainly for overflow and transfers; stream a supported title when cloud gaming makes a local install unnecessary.

Why a game can need more space than its final install size

A store page usually describes the space occupied after the game is installed. The installer may also need room for a compressed download, temporary unpacked files, verification data, and a patch that is applied before temporary files are removed. A drive can therefore reject an installation even when its remaining free space appears larger than the finished game.

The requirement also changes by platform, edition, language pack, texture pack, and installation stage. Activision’s launch support documentation for Black Ops Cold War, for example, listed 95 GB free on PlayStation 4 and 93 GB free on Xbox One. Those figures were free-space requirements at launch, not a promise that every later update would fit within the same amount. Activision also documented optional mode packs that can reduce the installed footprint.

Bungie’s current platform table, accessed in 2026, gives a more extreme example: a Steam installation of Destiny 2 plus preload is shown at about 353.00 GB. Bungie warns that some platforms need additional space during download and installation. Treat a publisher’s peak or preload figure as the number that controls your plan whenever it is supplied.

There is no official, universal “keep 10 percent free” rule that applies to every launcher or console. The safe figure is the documented peak requirement for the games you intend to install, plus room for the platform’s normal updates and for the operating system to function.

Step 1: Build a real storage budget before downloading

Start with a short inventory rather than clicking Install on each game in sequence. Record the requirement shown by the publisher or platform and identify whether it describes the final installation, a download, a preload, or free space needed while installing.

  1. List the games and editions. Include separate campaign, multiplayer, high-resolution texture, language, and season or expansion packs when the launcher treats them as optional components.
  2. Check the current requirement for each platform. A PC, PlayStation, and Xbox version can have different requirements. Use the publisher’s support page when it gives a larger figure than the store listing.
  3. Mark the controlling number. If a source gives both an installed size and a preload or installation figure, budget for the larger peak figure.
  4. Compare the budget with the correct volume. On a PC, the relevant volume is the drive that holds the game library and the temporary download location. On a console, check the internal storage or expansion device selected by the system.
  5. Leave update headroom. Do not fill a drive to the last gigabyte. The amount required varies by game and platform, so use the largest documented update or installation requirement when one exists rather than applying an invented percentage.
Item to record Why it matters Example or qualification
Final installed size Estimates the space retained after cleanup Useful, but not necessarily the peak needed to install
Download size Shows how much data must be fetched May be compressed and smaller than temporary unpacked files
Installation or preload requirement Controls whether the installer can complete Destiny 2 Steam install plus preload is about 353.00 GB in Bungie’s current table accessed in 2026
Optional content Lets you avoid packs you will not use Activision documented selective mode packs for Black Ops Cold War
Update behavior Determines how much free space must remain later No single reserve percentage is official for all games

When several games are queued, add their peak requirements rather than their post-install sizes. If the total exceeds the available capacity, decide which games belong on the active drive and which can be moved, archived, selectively installed, or streamed.

Step 2: Free space in a low-risk order

Freeing space can improve a computer’s operation and security, but deleting the wrong folder can damage a game or your personal data. Work from reversible, clearly identified items to more disruptive changes.

Windows cleanup

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage and review the category breakdown.
  2. Open Cleanup recommendations. Review each suggestion instead of accepting every category automatically.
  3. Remove temporary files, old installers, and other items you recognize as disposable. Empty the Recycle Bin after confirming that it contains nothing you need.
  4. Move large personal files such as video, photos, and project archives to another drive or a backed-up external device. Moving personal files usually creates more room than deleting small caches.
  5. Change where new documents, applications, and other content are saved so the system volume does not refill immediately. The relevant controls are under Windows storage settings and advanced storage settings; labels can vary by Windows release.

Do not manually delete unknown folders under a game launcher’s installation directory. A launcher may interpret missing files as corruption and redownload them, or a partial deletion may leave less usable space than a clean uninstall.

Console cleanup

  • Uninstall games you no longer play from the console’s storage management screen.
  • Before removing a game, confirm that its saves are synchronized to the platform account or cloud-save service where available. A game’s installation can usually be downloaded again, but an unsynchronized save may not be recoverable.
  • Remove optional packs, languages, and high-resolution assets when the game’s management screen lists them separately.
  • Keep the system software and captures in mind; screenshots and video clips can consume substantial space even though they are not games.

Deletion is reversible only when the game is still available to redownload and your progress is protected. If either condition is uncertain, back up the save and any unique local content first.

Step 3: Rebalance game libraries before buying hardware

Steam on Windows and other PCs

Steam can maintain multiple library locations. Open Steam > Settings > Storage, add a library path on the destination drive, select an installed game, and choose Move. Steam then transfers the managed files instead of downloading the entire game again. Close other game processes and let the move finish before launching the title.

Prefer an internal SSD for an active Steam library. Steam Support states: “It is not recommended to install Steam to an external hard drive, due to potential performance issues.” A removable drive can disconnect, change its drive letter, enter a power-saving state, or deliver lower and less consistent throughput. Those problems can cause a game to fail to start or force file verification.

If you use an external drive temporarily, connect it before starting Steam, keep the same drive letter on Windows, and use Steam’s storage screen to confirm the library is present. Do not install the Steam client itself to an external hard drive unless you accept the performance and connection risks documented by Steam.

Windows default locations

After adding a second internal drive, redirect future content rather than moving the same games repeatedly. In Settings > System > Storage, open the controls for where new content is saved and select the intended volume for new applications or other content. Individual launchers may have their own library setting, so verify the destination in each launcher before beginning a large download.

Storage Spaces is a different tool

Windows Storage Spaces pools multiple physical drives into a logical storage space. Microsoft specifies at least two extra drives beyond the Windows drive for a storage space. It is useful when you need pooled capacity or resiliency, but it is not a substitute for a launcher’s library-move function. Configure it only after understanding how a failure of one drive affects the selected layout and your backups.

Step 4: Choose expansion hardware by platform

Platform Best choice for active games Where external storage fits Critical checks
Windows PC Compatible internal SSD Overflow, personal files, or a launcher that explicitly supports external libraries Interface, physical fit, free PCIe or drive-bay capacity, and the launcher’s library rules
PlayStation 5 Compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD installed in the expansion bay Use the console’s supported USB storage rules for titles that can be stored or played there Sony’s current minimum capacity, interface, read-performance, and heatsink requirements
Xbox Series X|S Internal high-speed storage or a compatible expansion card USB storage is useful for moving or storing games that do not need the internal storage class Whether the specific title requires the high-speed storage class and what the console prompt permits

PC: internal SSD versus external SSD

An internal SSD is the broadly compatible answer for a PC’s active library. Check the motherboard or laptop’s available slot, supported interface, physical length, and whether a heatsink is required. Keep the operating system and heavily played games on volumes with predictable free space; reserve slower or removable storage for archives and personal files.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

An external USB SSD is faster and more durable for repeated transfers than a traditional external hard disk, but “SSD” alone does not guarantee that every launcher will run games from it. Confirm support in the launcher, keep the device connected during play, and use a stable cable and port. If a title refuses to run externally, move it to an internal library rather than repeatedly repairing the installation.

PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 expansion is platform-specific. Sony supports compatible M.2 SSDs only when they meet its current size, interface, read-performance, and heatsink requirements. Check Sony’s current specifications immediately before purchase because a drive that fits physically may still fail the performance or thermal requirements. Once installed and formatted by the console, a qualifying M.2 drive can store, download, manage, and play compatible PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 content.

Xbox Series X|S

Current-generation titles that require the Xbox high-speed storage class must run from the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card. A USB drive remains useful for storing and moving games, and some titles can run from it, but the console will tell you when a game must be moved back to internal or expansion storage. Read that prompt for the specific title rather than assuming every game has the same rule.

Step 5: Reduce each installation without losing what you use

Selective content

Many large games separate campaign, multiplayer, language, and texture components. In the game’s launcher or console storage manager, install only the modes you play. Activision documented this approach for Black Ops Cold War; removing unused mode packs can reduce the overall footprint. Recheck the component list after a major update because an update may offer new optional assets or restore a dependency.

Streaming instead of installing

Xbox says users can “Skip the install and stream most games with cloud gaming.” This is conditional: the account needs the applicable subscription, the title must be cloud-playable in your region, and the service must be available with a connection capable of sustaining the stream. Streaming saves local capacity but trades it for network bandwidth, latency sensitivity, and dependence on catalog and service availability. It is most useful for trying a game or playing an occasional title, not as a guarantee that every owned game can be streamed.

Step 6: Move libraries safely and protect saves

  1. Finish or cancel active downloads. A launcher may not move files that are currently being patched.
  2. Close the game and launcher normally. Avoid unplugging a drive while a launcher is writing metadata.
  3. Use the supported move command. On Steam, use Settings > Storage, select the library, and choose Move. On consoles, use the system’s Move or Copy storage command.
  4. Wait for verification. Let the launcher complete its file check before starting the game.
  5. Test a launch and a save. Open the game, load a save, and confirm that new progress synchronizes before deleting the original copy.
  6. Keep independent backups of important saves. Steam’s backup feature covers games that fully download, install, and patch through Steam; saves and custom content may require separate backup. A game without cloud synchronization needs a separately copied save folder or platform backup.

Do not treat a library move as a backup. A move normally leaves one copy, so drive failure can still remove the game and its local saves. Keep irreplaceable saves in a second location.

Capacity-planning examples

When the final sizes fit but the install fails

Suppose two games appear to total less than the free space shown in Explorer, but one publisher lists a larger preload requirement. Use that preload figure in the budget, then account for the temporary download location. If the drive cannot hold the peak, install the first game, move it to an internal secondary library, and install the second; or add compatible storage before starting. Deleting random small files will not solve a peak-space deficit as reliably as changing the sequence or destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a single game dominates the plan

If one title has a requirement comparable to the entire free capacity, install it on the fastest suitable volume first and keep optional packs out. Use the remaining drive for smaller active games and place infrequently played titles on a supported secondary library. Bungie’s approximately 353.00 GB Steam install-plus-preload figure illustrates why one game can determine the entire storage decision.

When a console is nearly full

Remove an unused game only after confirming its save status, then use the console’s content manager to remove optional packs. If the same titles return regularly, compare the cost and compatibility of the platform’s approved expansion with the time spent deleting and redownloading. For PlayStation 5, verify the M.2 requirements; for Xbox Series X|S, reserve the internal or expansion-card class for titles that require it and use USB storage for transfers where permitted.

Troubleshooting common storage problems

“Not enough free space” despite apparently sufficient capacity

  • Check the publisher’s installation or preload figure, not only the final installed size.
  • Confirm that the temporary download and unpacking location is on the same volume or has enough room.
  • Empty the Recycle Bin and remove temporary installers through the operating system’s storage controls.
  • Restart the launcher after cleanup so it refreshes the free-space calculation.

The moved game appears uninstalled

  • Reconnect the destination drive and confirm that its drive letter or mount point has not changed.
  • In the launcher’s storage settings, add or rescan the library path.
  • Run the launcher’s file verification instead of deleting and redownloading immediately.

A game will not run from an external drive

  • Check whether the launcher supports running from external storage; some document performance or disconnect risks.
  • For Xbox Series X|S, read whether the title requires internal or expansion-class storage.
  • Move the game to an internal SSD or certified expansion when the title requires that performance class.

Progress disappeared after cleanup

  • Stop deleting files and check the platform account’s cloud-save status.
  • Restore the latest independent save backup if synchronization was disabled or incomplete.
  • Redownload the game only after confirming that the correct account and edition are selected.

A repeatable maintenance routine

  • Keep a written list of the games installed on each volume and their optional components.
  • Review free space before a major release or expansion rather than when an installation is already queued.
  • Leave room for the largest documented patch or preload you expect, without relying on an arbitrary percentage.
  • Use built-in Windows Cleanup recommendations and the console’s storage manager before third-party cleaners.
  • Move personal media away from the game volume so a patch does not compete with irreplaceable files.
  • Use internal SSD or platform-certified expansion storage for games you play often; reserve removable storage for supported overflow and transfers.
  • After every library move, launch the game and verify a save before removing the old copy.
  • Recheck cloud-play eligibility and subscription requirements before choosing streaming as a substitute for installation.
