Use Steam’s Download Manager as the control center for several demo installations. Start each demo, pause the entries you do not want using bandwidth, drag the priority demo to the front of the queue, and resume only what you want active. You can also allow downloads during gameplay, cap the transfer rate, schedule update windows, change download regions, and move installations to another Steam Library folder when storage is tight.
Open Steam’s Download Manager first
Steam puts progress, queue order, paused transfers, updates, and completed downloads in one place: the Download Manager. Open it using any of these paths:
- Click Downloads at the bottom of the Steam client.
- Choose View > Downloads from the top menu.
- Open Library > Downloads.
Steam Support describes this screen as the place where downloads and updates are managed. Keep it open while installing several demos so you can see which item is active, which entries are waiting, and whether Steam has paused anything automatically.
Queue several demos without losing priority
1. Start each demo installation
From the Steam Store or your Library, select Install for every demo you want to try. Accept the installation prompts and choose a Steam Library folder. Steam adds each new download to the Download Manager rather than requiring you to monitor every store page.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Pause entries that should wait
In the Download Manager, identify the demos that should not consume bandwidth yet and click their pause controls. Pausing an entry leaves it in the list, so you can resume it later without starting the installation again. This is useful when one large demo is your immediate priority and the others are only planned downloads.
3. Reorder the queue
Drag the preferred demo above the other waiting entries, or use the ordering controls shown by your Steam client. Queue order determines which waiting item Steam handles next after the current transfer finishes or is paused. Reorder again whenever your priority changes; you do not need to cancel and recreate the installations.
4. Resume the selected demo
Resume the item you want to finish first. Leave lower-priority entries paused if you need the fastest possible completion for the selected demo. If you are comfortable sharing bandwidth, resume additional entries and use a speed limit to keep the total transfer from overwhelming your connection.
5. Verify the result
Watch the Download Manager for the active status, progress, estimated time, and disk activity. A demo can finish downloading and then move into installation or verification. Do not remove a completed entry until Steam shows that the game is ready to launch. If the wrong demo starts, pause it, move the intended demo to the top, and resume that item.

Choose between a strict queue and shared bandwidth
There are two practical ways to handle a backlog. A strict queue gives one demo nearly all available bandwidth; a shared plan lets multiple entries proceed while Steam’s speed cap protects other traffic. Choose based on what matters most at that moment.
| Consideration | Strict sequential queue | Bandwidth-limited shared use |
|---|---|---|
| Time to finish the highest-priority demo | Usually the shortest path because other demo transfers are paused. | Longer for the priority demo because available bandwidth is divided. |
| Impact on household traffic | Highest while the active demo uses the connection without a cap; lower once it is complete. | More predictable when a download-speed limit is set. |
| Gameplay latency while downloading | Can still rise if the active transfer saturates the connection. | A cap leaves capacity for game traffic, voice chat, and other users. |
| Disk capacity and library location | Only the current installation needs immediate attention, but every queued demo still eventually needs space. | Several installers may consume storage at once, so check free space on the selected Library drive. |
| Overnight scheduling | Useful when you want the first demo completed before later downloads begin. | Useful when all demos can transfer unattended within an update window. |
For a limited connection or a nearly full drive, start with a strict queue. For a large backlog that can run unattended, allow more than one entry and impose a bandwidth cap.
Keep Steam downloading while you play
Steam commonly pauses downloads when a game launches. That default prevents a background transfer from competing with the game, but it also means a demo queue may stop as soon as you begin playing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEnable downloads during gameplay
- Open Steam > Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay.
- Close Settings and return to the Download Manager to confirm that the transfer resumes.
If the option is enabled but a particular game still pauses transfers, check the Download Manager for a manual pause, an update restriction, or a per-game exception. Client versions can expose related controls in slightly different locations.

Prevent lag after enabling the option
Allowing downloads during gameplay does not guarantee smooth latency. A full-speed transfer can fill the connection’s available capacity and cause delayed inputs, voice-chat problems, or buffering for other devices. Set a download-speed limit under Steam > Settings > Downloads, then observe the game and household network. Lower the limit until gameplay remains responsive.
Set a download-speed limit correctly
Steam’s speed-limit setting is in Steam > Settings > Downloads, and the active limit is visible in the Download Manager. Use it when several demos share a connection, when you are playing online, or when other people need reliable access.
Understand bytes versus bits
Steam expresses the limit in bytes or megabytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. These units are not interchangeable: a provider’s megabits-per-second figure is eight times the corresponding megabytes-per-second figure before accounting for protocol overhead. Compare like with like before choosing a cap. For example, convert your plan’s advertised megabits per second to megabytes per second, then select a limit below that practical maximum so other traffic has room.

Adjust the cap for the situation
- Priority download: pause other demos and use no cap, or a high cap, if the connection is otherwise idle.
- Gaming: keep the queue running but choose a conservative cap and test latency in an actual match.
- Shared household connection: use a lower cap that leaves predictable capacity for video calls, work, and streaming.
- Overnight transfer: raise the cap only if no other scheduled activity depends on the connection.
Change the value when circumstances change. A cap is a traffic-management tool, not a way to make Steam’s content servers faster.

Schedule downloads for overnight or off-peak hours
Steam’s Downloads settings include an automatic-update window. Set the window for a period when the computer is on and the connection is lightly used, such as overnight. This helps move large demo updates away from working or gaming hours.
- Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Find the automatic-update scheduling controls.
- Choose a start period that matches your off-peak hours.
- Keep the computer awake, Steam signed in, and the network connected during that period.
Scheduling does not remove manual control. If an update or demo must start immediately, open the Download Manager and use the manual override available there. Valve’s December 11, 2024 Steam Client Beta notes also describe update-timing defaults, per-game overrides, Manage Exceptions controls, speed limits, and the ability to pause downloads while playing or streaming; labels can therefore differ slightly by client version.
Fix a slow or stalled demo queue
Check the queue before changing network settings
First confirm that the demo is not paused manually, waiting behind another entry, or installing files after the network transfer has completed. A download can appear inactive while Steam verifies or writes data to disk. Check the status text and disk-activity indicators before assuming the content server is slow.

Steam routes content through a selected download region. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region and try the closest region to your location. If that region is congested or performing poorly, test another nearby region and then restart the transfer. Steam Support recommends checking this setting when content-server connections are slow.

Check security software and filtering
Security software, firewalls, filtering services, or restrictive network policies can interfere with Steam’s content-server connection. Temporarily review their logs and permitted applications rather than disabling protection indiscriminately. On a managed school or work network, an administrator may control the relevant traffic.
Separate network limits from disk limits
If the network rate is high but progress barely moves, watch disk activity and free space. A slow or nearly full drive can make installation and verification the bottleneck even when the internet connection is healthy. Leave enough free capacity for the demo’s download, unpacking, and installation process; Steam may need working space in addition to the final installed size.

When several demos exceed the free space on your current drive, create or select another Steam Library folder. Steam supports assigning a new installation to any existing Library folder and moving existing games between Library folders without downloading them again.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Add or select a Library folder
- Open Steam’s storage or Library-folder management screen from the client settings.
- Select an alternate internal drive or connect an external SSD.
- Create or choose a Steam Library folder on that drive.
- When installing a demo, select the folder with sufficient free space.
An external SSD is an optional way to expand capacity for a large demo backlog. The documented benefit is additional Library storage and the ability to move installations without redownloading; Steam does not promise faster internet delivery merely because the Library is on an external SSD.
Move an existing installation
Use Steam’s installed-game storage controls to select a game, choose the move option, and designate the alternate Library folder. Steam transfers the local files instead of fetching the demo again. Keep the drive connected and avoid interrupting the move. Afterward, verify the game’s install location in the Library before disconnecting the drive.
Avoid common storage mistakes
- Do not pause a transfer and assume its partial files can be moved safely through the operating system; use Steam’s move function.
- Do not disconnect an external drive while Steam is downloading, installing, verifying, or moving a game.
- Check the destination drive’s free space before starting several installers.
- Remember that queued demos still require storage later, even if they are currently paused.
Practical setups for common situations
You need one demo ready quickly
- Start all desired installations so they appear in the Download Manager.
- Pause every lower-priority demo.
- Move the urgent demo to the top of the queue.
- Resume it and leave other entries paused until it is ready to launch.
This setup minimizes competition for both bandwidth and disk activity.
You want the backlog finished while the household sleeps
- Confirm that every destination Library has enough free space.
- Resume the demos you want transferred overnight.
- Set a speed limit only if another scheduled device or service needs bandwidth.
- Configure the automatic-update window in Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Leave the computer, Steam, and any external storage connected for the full window.
Review the Download Manager in the morning for completed, paused, or failed entries.
Quick Recap
You are playing online while demos download
- Enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay.
- Set a conservative speed limit in Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Resume only the demos that fit your available storage.
- Test latency, voice chat, and other household traffic.
- Lower the cap or pause the queue if the game becomes unstable.
Diagnose symptoms quickly
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The newest demo keeps starting first | Queue order was not changed, or another entry remains active. | Pause the active item, drag the desired demo to the top, and resume it. |
| Downloads stop when a game opens | Gameplay pausing is enabled by default. | Turn on Allow Downloads During Gameplay under Downloads settings. |
| The game becomes laggy while a demo downloads | The transfer is consuming too much connection capacity. | Apply or lower the Steam download-speed limit. |
| Steam reports little progress despite a fast connection | Disk writing, unpacking, verification, or low free space is limiting progress. | Check disk activity and free space, then use another Library folder if needed. |
| The download is consistently slow | Download-region congestion, filtering, security software, or network conditions. | Try the closest or another nearby Download Region and review network controls. |
| Steam cannot fit another demo | The selected Library drive lacks capacity. | Select or create another Library folder, including one on an external SSD. |
