If your PS5 does not have enough free space for a PlayStation Plus game, start at Settings > Storage to see what is using the console’s storage. The quickest fix is usually to delete a game or app you are not using; you can download purchased games and apps again from your game library. If you want to keep a PS5 game installed but off the console, move it to USB extended storage as an archive, or use a compatible M.2 SSD for games you want to play directly.
Check what is taking up space
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage.
- Review the storage breakdown and available space to identify what is consuming the most room.
- For installed titles and applications, open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
Menu wording can vary by region or localization; follow the equivalent labels shown on your console.
Free space by deleting games or apps
Select an unneeded game or application in Games and Apps, then choose Delete. Deleting an installation frees space on the console but does not remove the right to re-download a purchased game or app from your game library.
Remove only part of a game when available
For some games, Customize lets you remove selected content, such as unused add-ons or portions you have finished, while retaining the rest of the installation. This is game-specific, so the option will not appear for every title. Check what the game offers before deleting its entire installation.

Choose where to keep games you want to retain

Move PS5 games to USB extended storage
To preserve a PS5 game installation without using console storage, open Game Library, select Options, then choose Move Games and Apps. The game is stored there as an archive: copy it back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing it. Sony specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection of 5 Gbps or later and 250 GB to 8 TB capacity for USB extended storage, and notes that not every device is guaranteed to work. Formatting a USB drive as extended storage erases the data already on that drive, so back up anything you need first. See PlayStation’s USB extended storage requirements and instructions.
Add an M.2 SSD for games you can play directly
A compatible M.2 SSD can store, download and run PS5 games. To choose where new games install, open Settings > Storage > Installation Location and select the M.2 storage option. Sony says compatible M.2 expansion can increase PS5 storage by up to 8 TB, but that is a compatibility-qualified maximum, not a guarantee that every drive of that capacity will work. M.2 SATA SSDs are unsupported. Why cloud saves will not make room for a game download
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for saved data, not installed games. Sony lists a limit of up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data; the PS4 limit also includes a maximum of 1,000 saved-data files.
