Manage facial recognition in the app or account for your specific display—and check whether turning it off also deletes the face data used to set it up. On Google Nest Hub Max, disabling Face Match removes its face model from the chosen device or home, but Google says enrollment images must be deleted separately. Amazon provides Visual ID deletion controls for compatible Echo Show devices. Camera controls are separate and can affect other features.
First, identify which kind of face data you want to manage
A facial-recognition setting and the data behind it are not necessarily the same thing. A device may use a stored face model or enrollment material to provide personalized experiences. Turning off recognition may stop the feature without deleting every item used to enroll it.
- Turn off recognition: Stops a feature from using face matching, within the scope you select.
- Delete enrollment data: Removes images or a saved profile used to create or support recognition. This may require a separate control.
- Disable the camera: Restricts camera sensing, but can also stop other camera-dependent features. It is not a substitute for deleting stored data.
Menu names and behavior depend on the brand, model, software and setup path. The steps below are documented for Google Nest Hub Max Face Match and Amazon Echo Show Visual ID; they should not be assumed to apply to every smart display.
Manage Face Match on Google Nest Hub Max
Google says Face Match on Nest Hub Max requires Voice Match. Open the Google Home app and use the home settings and Assistant settings to find Face Match. Depending on whether your home uses Google Assistant or Gemini for Home, the current labels may differ.

- In the Google Home app, open the settings for your home.
- Open the Assistant settings and select Face Match. If the labels differ, look for the Face Match control in the current settings for your home.
- Choose whether to deselect Face Match for a particular device or remove it from the home. The first choice is device-specific; the second applies at home level.
- To remove the enrollment images as well, follow Google’s separate Voice and Face Match enrollment-image deletion instructions. Turning off Face Match alone does not delete those images.
Google also says turning off Voice Match opts the user out of Face Match. That is another way to stop the feature, but it does not replace the separate enrollment-image deletion step.
Google Home and Nest Help explicitly warns: “Your Google Nest Hub Max’s Face Match is not a security feature.” Google says the display may mistake a photograph for the user or confuse a similar-looking household member. Do not rely on Face Match as a lock, identity check or access-control measure. Google’s Face Match help describes the feature and its controls.

Manage Visual ID on Amazon Echo Show
Amazon describes Visual ID as on-device facial recognition for personalized experiences on compatible Echo Show devices. Amazon provides controls to delete Visual ID from a device with a screen and a separate account- or app-related help path.
- Use Amazon’s Visual ID help to locate the deletion instructions for your Echo Show.
- Choose the device-level or Alexa app/account route appropriate to where you want the ID removed.
- Follow the instructions for your exact model and current software. Amazon notes that some menu labels vary by model.
These controls concern Visual ID. If your goal is also to limit camera sensing, check the camera controls separately rather than assuming that deleting an ID disables the camera.

Decide whether to change the camera setting too
Turning off face recognition and disabling a camera are different decisions. A camera control may affect functions beyond recognition. For the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Amazon identifies Live View, Drop In and Visual ID as camera-dependent functions. Disabling the camera on those models can therefore affect all three. Do not assume the same behavior for every Echo Show generation; check the help for your model. Amazon’s camera help for these models lists the affected functions.
A physical shutter or camera cover may block the lens, but blocking a camera does not itself delete a face model, enrollment images or account data. Treat physical camera blocking as a separate privacy measure, not as a data-removal procedure.

Check the data and privacy implications
Google’s connected-home privacy guidance lists setup details, sensor data, audio and video, and derived data such as facial-recognition information among possible data categories. What is collected or processed depends on the feature, settings, account and region. Google’s connected-home privacy information also says users may need visitor consent depending on local law and how they use cameras or face recognition.
Storage details for one product family should not be generalized to another. Google distinguishes older Nest camera models set up in the Nest app from newer camera models set up in Google Home in its familiar-face detection help. That information concerns those cameras; it does not establish where every smart display or brand stores face data.
