Android Auto shows the time, signal strength, battery status and a count of missed calls, messages or alerts; phone settings control which app notifications are allowed. Google documents these as separate surfaces, so hiding a notification from the phone’s status bar should not be assumed to remove Android Auto’s car-screen status area.
What the Android Auto status area shows
On the vehicle display, Android Auto’s status area shows the time, signal strength and battery status. A numbered circle indicates missed calls, messages or alerts; tap the count to open the notification center. This is an overview of notifications, not the place to configure each app’s notification permissions. Google’s guide to Android Auto screens and apps describes the status area and notification center.
Change which app notifications appear
Use the Android phone’s notification settings to adjust alerts from a particular app. Android’s exact menus and available options vary by phone and version, but the usual approach is to open the phone’s Settings, choose Notifications, select App notifications or the equivalent, and choose the app. Check that notifications are enabled and, if the phone offers notification categories, review the category relevant to the alert.
- Open Settings on the Android phone.
- Open Notifications, then the app-notification controls. The precise label and path vary by device.
- Select the app whose notifications you want to change.
- Turn its notifications or the relevant category on or off. Where offered, check whether the category is set to alerting or silent and whether Pop on screen is enabled if you want banners on the phone.
These phone options govern the phone’s notifications; their labels and availability are not universal. Google’s Android notification guide explains app and category controls and notes that settings can vary by device.

Hide silent notifications from the phone status bar
Some Android phones provide an option to hide silent notifications from the phone’s status bar. That is a phone display setting, not a documented control for Android Auto’s car-screen status area. Google’s Android Auto guide describes the car display’s time, signal, battery and notification count separately. If your goal is to stop a particular alert appearing in Android Auto, adjust that app’s notification settings on the phone rather than relying on the phone status-bar option.
Find or hear messages in Android Auto
Android Auto can show message notifications. You can use voice control to hear a message or select its notification. Missed or dismissed messages may also be available in tiles or the notification center. See Google’s instructions for sending and receiving messages for supported message interactions.

For safer use, set up or change settings while parked. Google’s Android Auto setup guidance says to prepare Android Auto while the car is in park; do not navigate phone settings while driving.

Show quick controls for apps is a separate Android Auto setting on the phone. Google says enabling it can keep media controls and navigation directions visible while a full-screen app is open. It is not documented as a way to hide or filter notifications. See Google’s Android Auto screens and apps guide.
