A full inventory in Over the Hill is best managed as a route-planning problem, not a race to carry every recovery item. Keep the reusable winch available, buy tool-slot upgrades, and reserve each remaining slot for the hazards on your next trail. Change equipment at the mechanic, use camps to repair and restock, and stop wasting limited-use tools on problems that driving technique can solve.
What a full inventory means in Over the Hill
Over the Hill begins with one tool slot and can be expanded to four. The winch is different from those carried tools: it is always in your inventory and can be used repeatedly, so it does not need to occupy one of the limited slots. The other recovery items compete for the slots you have purchased.
That distinction matters when a route contains several different hazards. A portable anchor may be essential on a treeless ridge, while a car jack is the right answer to a rollover. Carrying both leaves fewer spaces for planks or a repair kit. The practical goal is not maximum item variety; it is enough coverage for the specific trail, weather, terrain and failure modes you expect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPublished guides do not provide an owner statistic showing how often players lose inventory items, nor do they publish a measured frequency for failed recoveries. The reliable way to avoid waste is therefore procedural: preserve the reusable winch, diagnose the obstacle before consuming a limited-use item, and return to a camp or mechanic before your last recovery option is gone.

Buy tool capacity before extending dangerous trips
Tool-slot upgrades are the most direct solution when you repeatedly arrive at a route with too little capacity. Maxbit Games lists the following Pebble prices in its 2026 guide:
| Tool slots available | Upgrade purchased | Cost | Cumulative cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Starting capacity | — | — |
| 2 | Second slot | 25 Pebbles | 25 Pebbles |
| 3 | Third slot | 50 Pebbles | 75 Pebbles |
| 4 | Fourth slot | 75 Pebbles | 150 Pebbles |
These are the published prices for the second, third and fourth slots; the complete expansion costs 150 Pebbles. GameTruth independently describes the same one-to-four-slot progression. Buy the next slot when your regular routes need another recovery method, rather than spending Pebbles to carry an item that rarely solves a real problem.
After capacity, choose vehicle upgrades around the weakness you encounter. Tires are the logical response to repeated traction failures; suspension or additional clearance helps when the chassis catches on rough ground. Other upgrades should follow a demonstrated route problem. TechRadar describes speed, grip, protection and tool capacity as upgradeable areas and notes that upgrades matter when you are trying to explore every area.
Know what each tool can and cannot solve
| Tool | Best use | Slot and reuse implications | Correct first move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winch | Pulling an upright vehicle toward a reachable tree or other valid anchor | Always in inventory; reusable as many times as needed | Stop accelerating, identify a safe attachment point, then winch |
| Portable anchor | Creating a winching point on exposed or treeless ground | Uses one carried slot; limited-use | Deploy only when no convenient natural anchor is reachable |
| Car jack | Returning a vehicle on its side or roof to its wheels | Uses one carried slot; limited-use | Use for a genuine rollover, not ordinary wheelspin |
| Wooden planks | Bridging a short gap or giving tires a firmer surface | Uses one carried slot; limited-use | Align planks with the wheel tracks before crossing |
| Repair kit | Repairing damage after a collision-heavy section | Uses one carried slot; limited-use | Pack it when impact damage is likely before the return trip |
| Portable camp | Providing temporary route support during a longer expedition | Uses one carried slot; listed as limited-use | Reserve it for an expedition that genuinely needs a temporary reset point |
The key diagnostic rule is simple: a spinning wheel will not free a vehicle whose chassis is resting on a rock. Stop accelerating before selecting equipment. If the chassis is physically supported by terrain, more throttle only consumes time and can worsen your position.
Build a loadout from the route, not from the whole toolbox
Start with the worst section
Look ahead on the planned trail and identify the hardest climb, narrow ledge, gap, treeless stretch or collision-prone descent. The worst section determines the first carried item. A route with a short gap needs a different loadout from a forest route where trees are plentiful but rollovers are common.

Keep the winch as the default recovery method
Because the winch is reusable and always available, test it before consuming an anchor, jack, plank or repair kit. An upright vehicle near a reachable tree often needs no limited-use item at all.
Add only the tools that match likely failures
Use the following decision pattern:
- Treeless or exposed ground: add a portable anchor.
- Steep side slopes or unstable edges: add a car jack if a rollover is plausible.
- Short gaps or soft, broken surfaces: add wooden planks.
- Rocky, narrow or collision-heavy route: add a repair kit.
- Long expedition with no convenient reset point: consider a portable camp.
Leave a slot open when the route is uncertain
Full capacity is not automatically efficient capacity. If you cannot identify a likely use for the fourth item, leaving that slot empty preserves flexibility for an item you discover you need later. A deliberately unused slot is safer than filling it with a tool that encourages an unnecessary deployment.

Use driving controls before spending a limited-use item
Choose the right range
Use low range before a steep or slippery climb. The recovery guidance says low range improves control and traction, while high range is suited to easier travel. Selecting low range early can prevent a slide, wheelspin or collision that would otherwise force you to consume a recovery item.
Switch to manual winching when automation is unsafe
If automatic winching points the vehicle toward an obstacle, switch to manual winching. Select the vehicle attachment side and the anchor yourself, then choose a line that pulls the chassis away from the obstruction rather than deeper into it. A winch is reusable, but a poor attachment angle can still leave you stuck.
Align planks with the wheel path
Planks work only when the tires can actually meet them. Place and align them with the intended wheel tracks before crossing a short gap or poor surface. Misalignment can turn a limited-use bridge into another recovery problem.

A step-by-step recovery procedure for a stuck vehicle
- Stop throttle input. If the wheels are spinning, release acceleration and inspect what is holding the vehicle.
- Check the chassis. Determine whether the underbody is resting on a rock, the vehicle is tilted toward a rollover, or the tires simply lack traction.
- Select low range. Use the lower range for controlled movement on steep or slippery ground.
- Look for a reachable tree. If the vehicle is upright and a safe tree is available, use the reusable winch first.
- Deploy a portable anchor only when necessary. Use it when no suitable tree or natural winching point is available.
- Use a jack for a rollover. A car jack is for returning a vehicle on its side or roof to its wheels; it is not a general-purpose traction tool.
- Use planks for a short gap or poor contact surface. Align them with the tire tracks, then cross with controlled throttle.
- Use manual winching if the automatic line is dangerous. Choose the attachment side and anchor to pull away from the obstacle.
- Repair damage at the next reset point. If a collision-heavy section has damaged the vehicle, use a repair kit only when necessary to finish safely, or return to a camp or mechanic.
- Abandon a low-probability attempt before your last item. If the setup is worsening and the next tool is limited-use, retreat to a discovered camp rather than spending it blindly.
Mechanic versus camp: where to change your plan
Visit the mechanic to change the loadout
Loadout changes during an expedition require a visit to the mechanic. Use that stop when the next route demands a different combination of anchor, jack, planks, repair kit or portable camp. Treat it as a planning checkpoint: remove tools that no longer match the terrain and equip the item that addresses the next confirmed hazard.
Use camps as reset points
Discovered camps replenish equipped consumables, repair the vehicle and provide fast travel. That makes a camp more than a place to stop; it is a way to reduce how much backup equipment you need to carry. If you are deciding whether to spend the last limited-use item on a low-probability recovery, returning to a discovered camp is usually the safer route.
Plan the return leg, not just the outbound trip
A vehicle that reaches a viewpoint with damaged tires, depleted consumables or no usable anchor may still need to drive back. Pack for the hazards on the return route as well as the destination. A repair kit is especially valuable when the outbound trail contains rocks, tight passages or repeated collision opportunities.
Loadout examples for common route types
| Route situation | Suggested carried tools | Why this works | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forested trail with reliable trees | Winch plus jack, or winch plus repair kit | Trees provide natural winching points; the extra slot covers rollover or damage risk | Spending a slot on an anchor unless the trail leaves the trees |
| Open ridge with few or no trees | Winch plus portable anchor; add jack if slopes are severe | The anchor supplies the missing winching point and the jack covers a rollover | Assuming the winch alone can attach without a natural point |
| Short-gap route | Winch plus wooden planks; add repair kit if rocks surround the crossing | Planks create a tire surface while the winch remains available for recovery | Approaching the gap at speed or placing planks across the wheel path |
| Rocky, collision-heavy route | Winch plus repair kit; add jack or anchor only if the map indicates that risk | The loadout protects the return trip without carrying every specialized tool | Using the repair kit to solve a chassis hang-up that needs extraction |
| Long expedition far from a discovered camp | Winch plus the route-specific recovery tool and, when justified, a portable camp | Temporary support reduces the chance that one failure ends the outing | Taking a camp automatically when a nearby reset point makes it unnecessary |
Prioritize upgrades by the failure you actually experience
- Buy the second tool slot for 25 Pebbles. This is the cheapest capacity increase and lets you pair the winch with one route-specific recovery item.
- Buy the third slot for 50 Pebbles when routes combine hazards. It supports combinations such as anchor plus jack or planks plus repair kit.
- Buy the fourth slot for 75 Pebbles when long expeditions justify it. The final slot is most valuable when you regularly encounter several distinct hazards before reaching a camp.
- Improve the vehicle after capacity covers the route. Select tires, suspension, clearance, protection or other upgrades according to the failure that repeatedly costs you time or tools.
Capacity has a compounding benefit: it lets you carry the right item instead of trying to solve every obstacle with throttle and repeated winch attempts. Vehicle upgrades then reduce how often those items are needed.
Managing a full inventory in online co-op
Over the Hill supports online co-op for up to four players, according to TechRadar. In a group, avoid four identical loadouts. Before leaving a mechanic or camp, agree who is carrying the anchor, jack, planks, repair kit and any portable camp. Keep at least one player equipped for the most likely route-specific failure and make sure everyone knows where the next discovered camp is.

Do not assume that another player can instantly solve a problem just because the group has more total items. A rollover, treeless section or damaged vehicle may occur far from the teammate carrying the relevant tool. Assigning coverage before departure prevents the team from reaching a hazard with four copies of a low-priority item.

TechRadar lists the game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, and reports testing both controller and mouse-and-keyboard controls on PC while playing mostly with a controller. A PC-compatible game controller is therefore a reasonable optional choice for players who prefer analog steering and gradual throttle input, especially on steep or slippery terrain. Confirm compatibility and current retailer availability for your specific platform before buying an accessory.
Common inventory mistakes and their fixes
Carrying every tool on every trip
Problem: Every slot is occupied, but none addresses the next hazard particularly well.
Fix: Identify the route’s hardest section, retain the winch, and replace generic items with one or two tools matched to that section.
Using a jack for ordinary wheelspin
Problem: The vehicle is upright and the tires are simply losing traction.
Fix: Select low range, improve the line, use the winch or place planks if the surface is poor. Reserve the jack for a vehicle on its side or roof.

Winching automatically into an obstacle
Problem: The selected line pulls the vehicle toward a rock, tree or edge.
Fix: Switch to manual winching and select the attachment side and anchor yourself.

Deploying an anchor when a tree is available
Problem: A limited-use anchor is consumed even though the reusable winch had a valid natural point.
Fix: Scan for a reachable tree before deploying the anchor.
Ignoring the return trip
Problem: The vehicle reaches the destination but cannot safely make the damaged or depleted return journey.
Fix: Pack for both directions and use a camp to repair and replenish before committing to the longest leg.
Spending the last item on a worsening attempt
Problem: A limited-use tool is used without confirming that it addresses the actual obstruction.
Fix: Stop, inspect the chassis and choose a mechanic or discovered camp when the recovery line is uncertain.

- Have you identified the route’s hardest climb, gap, ledge or treeless section?
- Is the reusable winch available and is there a safe natural anchor on the route?
- Which single limited-use item addresses the most likely failure?
- Should a second item cover rollover, collision damage or a second terrain type?
- Is one slot intentionally open because the route is uncertain?
- Have you selected low range before the steep or slippery section?
- Where is the nearest discovered camp, and can it repair and restock you before the return leg?
- If playing co-op, does the group have coverage for different hazards rather than duplicate tools?
With four slots, the strongest general pattern is winch plus two route-specific tools, leaving the final slot open or assigning it to the expedition’s least predictable risk. Expand to the fourth slot when the route length and distance from a camp make that flexibility worth 75 Pebbles.
