For a Tamil-language blog, “thumbnail” can mean the image shown on a link card on your own links page, or the image a social network fetches when someone shares a page. They are separate: make the card image for your layout, then set share-preview metadata on each page you expect readers to share.

Choose what the thumbnail needs to do

A link-page card should help a visitor recognize where a link goes before tapping it. A share-preview image serves a different purpose: it accompanies a URL when it is posted to a social network or messaging app. One image may be used for both, but the card layout and the platform preview still need to be checked separately.

  • For your links page: pair each destination with a representative image, a concise title, and, where useful, a short Tamil description.
  • For link sharing: set the destination page’s title, description, and intended preview image rather than relying on a platform to choose an image for you.

Make a consistent set of link-card images

Inventory the destinations

For every link, note the destination URL, a short identifying title, an optional one-line Tamil description, and an image that represents the destination. Keep the image treatment consistent across cards—such as a shared crop, background, or color palette—so the page feels like one collection.

Do not make tiny overlaid text carry all the identifying information. A visitor should be able to read the title in the card itself, and the image should remain useful when displayed small.

Choose how to build the cards

Approach Useful when Trade-off
Manual image cards in the page editor You want direct control over the artwork and layout. You must maintain each card’s image and text manually.
WordPress link-card block You want cards that can draw information from posts or a destination’s Open Graph metadata. Behavior depends on the destination having usable metadata, and you should check compatibility and support before installing a plugin.
Hosted link-in-bio page You want a standalone landing page rather than cards embedded in your existing blog. It adds a separate publishing destination and may have domain or plan limits.

The WordPress.org listing for Custom Card Link – OGP Blog Card Block describes a free, GPL-licensed Gutenberg block. For internal links it uses a post’s title, excerpt, and featured image; for external links it can retrieve title, description, and image from Open Graph metadata. It offers card and list layouts, spacing controls, and responsive card images. Check the listing’s current compatibility and support information before adding it; the listing alone does not establish compatibility with every WordPress installation.

If you want a hosted links landing page, Canva’s link-in-bio tool documents templates, brand-color and font customization, and responsive previews. Its feature FAQ says a free site can use a Canva subdomain, while using a unique or existing domain requires Pro; confirm current plan terms before relying on them. Canva is an optional design and publishing route, not a requirement for creating thumbnails.

Design for Tamil at actual card size

Use a typeface that renders the Tamil copy you plan to publish, then inspect the glyph shapes, spacing, and contrast at the card’s real display size. Keep wording short enough to remain legible on a phone. Preview the finished card on a small screen before publishing; an image that looks clear on a desktop canvas may become crowded when reduced.

Set the share preview separately

On WordPress.com, the platform automatically adds og:title, og:description, and og:image tags to posts and pages. Its support guide says a page uses its title, excerpt, and featured image; if there is no excerpt, it uses the first 195 characters of content, and if there is no featured image it searches other images on the site. Set a deliberate featured image and a useful title and excerpt to reduce the chance that an unintended image is selected. See WordPress.com’s social-preview guide for the platform’s current behavior.

Start with a practical preview size

WordPress.com Support’s 2026 guidance recommends a social-preview canvas of 1200 × 630 px, with an aspect ratio of 1.91:1. It advises JPG or PNG and keeping the file under 5 MB as a general safe standard. Keep essential visual details near the center so cropping is less likely to cut them off.

The same support site’s Facebook-specific guidance distinguishes its stated thresholds: a 200 × 200 pixel minimum, at least 600 × 315 pixels for larger images, and 1200 × 630 pixels for high-resolution displays, with an 8 MB maximum and a ratio near 1.91:1. The general under-5-MB recommendation is a safer broad target; the 8 MB figure is Facebook’s stated maximum in that guide, not a universal limit for every platform. See WordPress.com’s Facebook image guidance.

Export, test, and refresh the preview

  1. Export the artwork: for a social preview, begin with 1200 × 630 px in JPG or PNG and keep the file under 5 MB where possible.
  2. Set the page fields: choose the intended featured image and enter a clear title and excerpt or description for the page.
  3. Inspect the real URL: check the preview on the platform where readers will share it. WordPress.com offers a Link Preview panel in Jetpack for listed platforms; Facebook and WhatsApp can be checked with the Facebook Sharing Debugger, and LinkedIn with Post Inspector.
  4. Check the Tamil rendering: view the preview on a phone and confirm that Tamil letters, word spacing, contrast, and any text near the edges remain clear.
  5. Refresh stale data when needed: social services cache page information, so a changed image may not appear immediately on a previously shared URL. WordPress.com says X re-indexes card tags roughly every seven days. Use the relevant platform inspector or debugger to request a fresh scrape where available.

WordPress.com specifically notes that special or language-specific characters in an image title can cause a Facebook preview issue. If Facebook flags that problem, try renaming the image with a plain filename, re-upload it, and request a fresh scrape. This is a troubleshooting step for that reported issue, not evidence that Tamil text generally fails.

Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems

The link card has no image

Check that the card has an image assigned. If a WordPress block is meant to retrieve an external image, check whether the destination page exposes Open Graph image metadata; an external card cannot reliably retrieve information the destination does not provide.

A social share shows the wrong image

Set the intended featured image and page description, then inspect the URL with the platform’s preview tools. A platform may have selected another site image or may still be showing cached information from before your change.

The new image does not show after an update

Check the page’s current metadata and request a fresh scrape with the relevant platform tool. A social service’s cache can outlast the change on your site; X’s re-index interval is roughly every seven days according to WordPress.com Support.

The Tamil text looks crowded or hard to read

Shorten the wording, increase contrast, and check the image at the size it will actually appear. Test the selected typeface with the actual Tamil text instead of assuming every font will render it as intended.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot image for a card, ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot with one GET request. The example saves a WebP capture of the target URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
