Make each thumbnail for the size and shape of your directory’s listing card—not for a supposed India-wide or Google-mandated standard. Start with a current, authorized business photo, crop it so the business remains recognizable at card size, export a suitably small file, and check the result on both mobile and desktop. The right pixel dimensions depend on your site’s layout.
Choose a photo that helps people recognize the business
Use a clear, current image that genuinely represents the listing: for example, a storefront or sign for a location-led business, or a product or service shown in context when that is more useful. A logo can work when it suits the directory’s design, but it may tell users less about a physical location than a real photo.
Ask the business to supply the image or confirm that the directory has permission to publish it. Keep the original file separately so you can make new crops or sizes later without degrading the source. For photos taken by the business, Google’s separate Business Profile guidance recommends images that are in focus and well lit, and without significant alterations or excessive filters; those are useful capture considerations, not directory upload rules. Google’s business photo tips also describe exterior and interior views that may help customers assess a business.
Set thumbnail dimensions from the listing-card design
There is no universal thumbnail dimension for business directories in India, and Google does not prescribe one. Measure the image area in your actual card design at the mobile and desktop breakpoints. Choose a consistent aspect ratio that fits that area, then make renditions appropriate to the sizes at which the site displays them. A square crop is one possible design choice, not a platform standard.

- Inspect listing cards at their real rendered widths on mobile and desktop.
- Choose the crop shape and focal point that keep the sign, product, or other identifying feature visible.
- Make a thumbnail rendition for the card and, if your site opens a larger image, a separate larger rendition.
- Compare the displayed result at its actual size. Adjust the crop if the subject is hard to recognize, and reduce file size only while the image remains acceptably sharp.
For a responsive site, provide alternate image renditions with srcset or <picture> and keep a fallback URL in src. Make the variants visually consistent so a browser changing source does not unexpectedly change the crop. Google recommends responsive image methods and image optimization rather than a fixed directory size. Google’s image SEO guidance explains these options.
Choose a file format and compress the export
Use a format your site’s image pipeline and target browsers can serve correctly. Google Search documents support for BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF when referenced through an image’s src. For ordinary business photographs, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF are practical raster choices; SVG is vector markup and is generally better suited to graphics such as logos than photos. Match the filename extension to the actual file type.

WebP may produce smaller files than PNG or JPEG at useful visual quality, but the outcome depends on the source image and export settings. Google for Developers reports lossless WebP as 26% smaller than PNG and lossy WebP as 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index; the page does not state a publication year. These are reported comparisons, not guaranteed savings for your images. Export a representative set of listings and compare both visual quality and transferred file size before applying settings site-wide. Google’s WebP documentation describes the comparisons.
Responsive renditions can also avoid sending an unnecessarily large image to a small display. Keep the original, use stable image URLs for the renditions your page references, and check the rendered page after any compression or format conversion.

Add the thumbnail with accessible, discoverable markup
Use a standard HTML <img> in the listing’s content, close to the business name and relevant details. Google says it can find images in the src attribute of an <img>, including one inside a <picture>; CSS background images are not indexed as image content. A simple fallback example is:
<img src="/images/mehta-electricals-pune.webp"
alt="Blue storefront of Mehta Electricals in Pune"
width="320" height="240">
Use dimensions that match the rendition and layout; the example dimensions are illustrative, not a standard. For a photo that conveys information, write concise alt text describing what it actually shows. If an image is purely decorative and adds no information beyond nearby text, use empty alt text (alt=""). Do not repeat city names or category keywords mechanically. A descriptive filename and a caption can help when the caption adds information not already present in the listing. See Google’s image SEO best practices for guidance on alt text and image context.

An image sitemap can provide image URLs that crawlers might not otherwise discover, and Google says a site owner can verify a CDN domain in Search Console to receive crawl error information. Neither guarantees indexing or a particular search result. Google may select image previews automatically; og:image or structured data such as primaryImageOfPage can indicate a preferred image, but cannot force the selection. Choose an image representative of the page, rather than a generic logo or an extreme aspect ratio. These discovery considerations are separate from making the thumbnail display correctly in your directory.
Keep permission and credit information with the image
Record who supplied or created each image and the permission or license terms that allow publication. When applicable, creator, credit, copyright, license, and license-acquisition information can be conveyed using structured data or IPTC photo metadata. Google cautions that removing metadata can have legal implications in some jurisdictions and recommends retaining critical rights and identification fields when possible. Google’s image metadata guidance explains these fields.

A directory thumbnail and a photo uploaded to a business’s Google Business Profile are different destinations with different requirements. Google’s current help guidance for Business Profile photos specifies JPG or PNG, a file size of 10 KB–5 MB, a recommended resolution of 720 × 720 px, and a minimum of 250 × 250 px. The profile must be verified before photos show on Google, and submitted photos go through review; processing may take 24–48 hours. These values and conditions apply to Business Profile, not to your directory’s thumbnails. Check Google’s Business Profile photo guidance before advising on an upload, since platform requirements can change.
Check the result and troubleshoot common problems
- The business is hard to recognize: Revisit the crop at the card’s actual displayed size. Move the focal point or choose a better source rather than relying on a larger file alone.
- The listing page feels slow: Check the actual transferred image sizes and whether a small display is receiving an oversized source. Create appropriately sized responsive variants and test compression without making the image visibly soft.
- The image looks stretched or unexpectedly cropped: Confirm that the rendition’s aspect ratio matches the card and that all responsive candidates preserve the intended subject and crop.
- The image does not appear in search results: Verify that the page uses a crawlable
<img src>and that the image URL is available to crawlers. An image sitemap can expose URLs that might otherwise be missed, but indexing is not guaranteed. - A Business Profile photo is rejected or delayed: Confirm it meets that product’s stated file type, size, and resolution guidance, and allow for review and processing. Directory rules do not override Business Profile rules.
- You cannot establish reuse rights: Request permission or replace the image; do not treat online availability as permission to republish.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page screenshot to help you inspect how listing cards render; it creates a screenshot of the page, not the business-photo thumbnail file itself. A GET request returns an image or PDF, and the API can be used to preview a page at a chosen URL. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.
