A public-page screenshot request by itself cannot show account-only content. Playwright can automate the browser steps and save either the visible viewport or the full page.
What you need before capturing a protected page
- An account authorized to view the page, plus an automation method the site permits.
- A browser automation script that follows the site’s normal login flow.
- A reliable way to recognize successful login, such as a signed-in control or the expected destination page.
Authentication differs by site. Check the site’s account permissions and requirements before automating it; browser automation documentation cannot establish whether a particular third-party service allows automated access or capture.
Make a thumbnail with Playwright
Install Playwright for your chosen language and browser, then adapt the selectors and URLs below to the target site’s login form. This Python example signs in, waits for a signed-in indicator, visits the protected page, checks that the browser did not land back on the login page, and saves a viewport screenshot.

browser.close()The example uses placeholder URLs, selectors, and credentials; replace them with the site’s actual login form and a page element that reliably indicates access. Do not hard-code real credentials in a script committed to source control. For login flows with multi-factor authentication, consent steps, or additional redirects, handle the site’s permitted ordinary steps and wait for a meaningful success signal before navigating onward.

Choose viewport or full-page output
page.screenshot(path="thumbnail.png")captures the current viewport, which is usually appropriate when the thumbnail should show the first screen.page.screenshot(path="full-page.png", full_page=True)captures content below the fold as well. Use it when the complete page matters, rather than a representative top-of-page image.
Playwright’s screenshot API also supports image-format and quality options. Choose the output and framing for the thumbnail’s destination; a very long full-page image may not work well when displayed at small sizes.
Make recurring captures without logging in each time
For repeated work, Playwright can save authenticated browser state and load it into a later browser context. The documented state may include cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkeys. The site’s authentication mechanism determines whether this is sufficient, so validate a reused session before capturing.

Session storage is an exception: Playwright’s authentication guide says it does not provide an API to persist session storage, and describes a separate initialization technique for sites that depend on it.
Protect the saved state
A saved state file can contain cookies or headers capable of impersonating the account. Keep it access-restricted, exclude it from source control, and refresh it when the session expires. Treat it like a password, not like an ordinary screenshot asset.

Troubleshooting login-protected thumbnails
- The screenshot shows the login form: Login may have failed, the success condition may be too weak, or the target URL may redirect unauthenticated visitors. Wait for a site-specific signed-in indicator, then check the final URL and target-page content before capturing.
- The script times out waiting for success: Confirm that the selector exists after login and is visible in the signed-in state. Account for redirects or additional steps rather than increasing a fixed sleep and assuming authentication worked.
- A saved session works once, then expires: The site’s session may have expired or been revoked. Repeat the permitted login flow, save fresh state, and protect the replacement file.
- The page is missing content that appears in a normal browser: Wait for the actual target content or a stable selector before taking the screenshot. The page may render data after initial navigation, or depend on session storage that the saved state did not preserve.
- The thumbnail cuts off important material: Use full-page capture if below-the-fold content is needed; use viewport capture when the desired image is only the visible screen.
Reliability, privacy, and operating cost
A self-managed Playwright workflow gives control over the login sequence and browser state, but you are responsible for keeping credentials and saved sessions secure, handling expired authentication, and maintaining the script as the target site’s flow changes. A managed screenshot request is operationally simpler for pages accessible to the service without a protected session; it should not be assumed to bypass authentication. Confirm that any tool’s login support and handling of authentication data fit the site’s rules and your security requirements before using it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a page that I cannot access?
No. A browser can capture only content the account and session are authorized to view; this workflow does not bypass access controls.
Can Playwright reuse a login between runs?
Yes, for supported authentication state such as cookies and local storage, but session storage requires separate handling and a saved state may expire.
