For the most reliable seamless transitions, crossfade your tracks in an audio editor, export them as one continuous file, then play that file in OBS with Loop enabled. OBS can loop a media file, but its documentation does not establish that a standard VLC playlist automatically crossfades between separate tracks.
Choose how you want to play the music

If seamless transitions are the priority, use the pre-rendered-file method unless you have independently verified another crossfade method. A sequence that plays one file after another is not necessarily gapless or crossfaded.
Make a continuous, crossfaded audio file
- Arrange the tracks in an audio editor. Put them in the intended order and overlap adjacent tracks where you want each transition to happen.
- Adjust the fades by listening. Ambient music varies in texture and volume, so there is no single crossfade duration established here as ideal. Listen through the overlaps and adjust them to suit the material.
- Export the full sequence as one audio file. OBS documents Media Source support for MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV audio. Choose a format your editor can export and OBS can play.
- Add it in OBS. In the scene you plan to stream, add a Media Source and select the rendered file.
- Enable Loop. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS says this restarts the file when playback finishes.
- Test the entire file and the loop point. Listen for unwanted gaps, abrupt level changes, or a jump when the end returns to the beginning. Make any needed edits in the audio project and export again.
Use separate files in an OBS playlist
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC to be installed for its VLC Video Source to appear.
- Add a VLC Video Source. Add it to the OBS scene and load the audio files as a playlist.
- Set the order. Leave shuffle off if you want tracks to play in a deliberate sequence; use shuffle only if varying the order is intended.
- Enable playlist looping. Use the VLC source’s playlist loop setting if you want playback to repeat.
- Check source visibility behavior. OBS documents that VLC source playback is set by default to stop when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. If your scenes hide and show the source, test what happens during a scene change and adjust the source behavior as needed.
- Listen to every transition in the stream preview. Do not assume the playlist crossfades simply because it loops. If you hear a gap or abrupt change, render the transitions into one file or use a separately verified crossfade solution.
Connect OBS to YouTube and check the stream
- Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select a stream and copy its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube as the service if offered, then enter the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Use the values for the stream you selected.
- Start the encoder from OBS. Check the YouTube live preview before you make the stream public or otherwise start the intended broadcast.
- Verify playback and sound. Confirm the music is audible in the preview, the transitions are right, the order is correct, and playback does not stop or restart unexpectedly when you change scenes.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Make sure your music rights cover both the live broadcast and any resulting replay.
Check music rights before you go live
YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. Its Help page states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder; if the identified content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated.

- Confirm that your permission covers live streaming, the territories where viewers may watch, and archiving or replay.
- If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without allowlisting, a live stream may still be interrupted.
- Owning or purchasing an audio file does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it.
Troubleshoot gaps, silence and interruptions
