What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To make rain audio sound consistent in a YouTube live loop, choose a steady section, audition the end-to-start join repeatedly, and repair clicks or level changes with careful edits. Then check the processed file through the same playback and encoder path you will use live. Peak normalization can set the loudest point; it cannot make every passage sound equally loud or make a poor loop seam disappear.
Choose rain audio that can repeat naturally
Start with a recording you own or are licensed to use for both the live stream and any archive. Listen through it before editing. Look for a region with a broadly steady rain texture and level, without a distinctive sound at either edge. A thunderclap, bird call, passing traffic, or abrupt weather change can make a section harder to loop cleanly unless the event can be removed without creating another audible edit.
There is no universally best loop length. Choose a section long enough to avoid an overly frequent repetition, but judge it by listening to the actual join rather than by length alone.
How to make a rain sound loop without a noticeable break
- Select a candidate region. In an audio editor such as Audacity, mark the beginning and end of a section whose ambience is compatible at both edges.
- Enable loop playback. Audition the selected region repeatedly, focusing on the last moments flowing into the first. Listen for a click, a sudden swell or dip, or a change in the rain’s texture. Audacity documents loop playback for selected regions (Audacity loop playback).
- Adjust the boundary before adding processing. Move either endpoint to find a more compatible join. If the adjacent audio is suitable, try a short fade or crossfade. Audacity’s fade tools can soften abrupt cut points that cause clicks, and its crossfade tools blend audio sections (Audacity fades and crossfades).
- Audition the full transition again. Repeat the loop several times after editing. A fade that removes a click can still create an audible dip or swell; change the boundary or fade shape if the transition calls attention to itself.
There is no fixed fade duration that works for every rain recording. Use the shortest, least noticeable edit that solves the problem, and trust repeated listening over a setting chosen by habit.

Why does my rain audio get louder and quieter?
First distinguish changes in the recording from changes introduced by playback or processing. Rain itself may vary, and an edit that joins two regions at different perceived levels can sound like a swell or dip. A player, mixer, or encoder may also have level controls or automatic adjustments worth checking. These are places to investigate, not proof that a particular application is changing the audio.
Peak normalization is not loudness matching
Audacity’s Normalize effect adjusts gain so the recording’s highest peak reaches a selected level. That sets a peak ceiling; it does not flatten quieter and louder passages. Loudness Normalization measures perceived level and applies a gain change. If you are matching several recordings, loudness measurements can be a useful starting comparison, but listen afterward: neither method fixes changing ambience or a bad join. For ordinary stereo audio, preserve left-right balance; Audacity warns that normalizing channels independently can change stereo balance (Audacity Normalize; Audacity Loudness Normalization).

Do not treat a spoken-word target as a rain specification
Audacity describes −23 LUFS as the EBU R 128 target and a reasonable default for spoken-word broadcast; it notes that streaming targets are usually a few LU higher. That is not a YouTube rain-loop target. No rain-specific YouTube loudness target is established here, so do not use the spoken-word reference as a required rain setting.
Set a sensible peak and listen after export
Check for clipping and set a safe peak ceiling during final export if needed. Audacity’s Normalize default is −1 dB, which its documentation presents as a general headroom setting, not a rain or YouTube requirement. Normalization changes level, not the recording’s internal dynamics. Avoid aggressive compression or automatic gain changes unless you have a specific problem to solve; a stable source and playback path should come first.

Keep the playback and encoder path stable
Play the edited loop through one known route into your encoder. Check the operating-system, player, mixer, and encoder for competing volume changes or automatic level controls. Use the encoder settings appropriate to your YouTube ingestion method: YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3, with 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo as advanced audio settings (YouTube encoder settings). YouTube documents a separate HLS ingestion path with its own supported codecs and requirements; do not assume that the general encoder and HLS codec lists are interchangeable (YouTube HLS ingestion).
Those audio figures are recommendations in YouTube’s guidance, not a rain-specific loudness or quality guarantee. Confirm the current settings for the encoder and ingestion route you actually use.

Test the complete stream before going public
- Use the same edited audio, playback route, encoder settings, and loop length planned for the live broadcast.
- Run a private or unlisted test and listen to the Live Control Room preview, including the loop join and several following repetitions.
- Check stream health and audio quality while the test is running. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event and says to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” Its live-stream tips also advise setting up encoders ahead of time and checking preview and archive status (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube live-stream tips).
Headphones are optional, but can help you listen closely to a boundary and the live output. YouTube lists them among common streaming hardware; it does not require a particular model (YouTube encoder setup).
Troubleshoot common rain-loop problems
| Symptom | What to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Click at every restart | An abrupt edit point or waveform discontinuity. | Move the boundary, try a fade or crossfade, and audition repeated joins. |
| Audible swell or dip at the restart | The start and end may differ in level or texture, or the overlap may be poorly shaped. | Try another region or adjust the overlap, then listen through the complete transition repeatedly. |
| Rain changes loudness within the segment | Source dynamics, changing ambience, or level automation in the playback chain. | Compare perceived loudness and check the player, mixer, and encoder route. Peak normalization alone will not flatten every passage. |
| The editor sounds right, but the live preview does not | The live encoder or routing path. | Test the complete signal path and monitor the preview and stream health. |
| The stream is interrupted or later receives a rights claim | Ownership, license scope, or a Content ID match. | Use authorized audio and consult YouTube’s current copyright guidance. |
Use audio you have rights to stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies such content, a placeholder may replace the stream; if the content remains, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated. For licensed third-party material, the owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption. YouTube’s livestream terms also place responsibility for obtaining necessary rights on the provider (YouTube live-stream copyright guidance; YouTube Terms of Service). A license should cover the intended live use and any archive, where applicable.
