Wait for the specific view you intend to capture—not just for the browser to finish navigation. In Puppeteer, use page.waitForSelector() for a stable, visible element that appears when the view is ready, or page.waitForFunction() for an app-specific readiness condition. Then call page.screenshot(). Network idleness can help, but it does not prove that a single-page app has finished rendering.
Why navigation completion is not the same as app readiness
A single-page app (SPA) can load its initial document and then fetch data, render components, or update the view in the browser. A page.goto() lifecycle condition describes navigation or network activity; it may not describe whether the content you need is visible and complete.
Choose a wait condition that corresponds to the target view. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation with a waitUntil option, while the selector and function APIs let you wait for page-specific conditions. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide, Page.waitForSelector, and Page.waitForFunction.
Wait for a meaningful visible element
When the app displays a stable marker only after the desired view is rendered, wait for that marker with visible: true. Replace the example selector with one from your app, preferably a dedicated test ID rather than a fragile styling class.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/app', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Replace this with a stable element that identifies the rendered view.
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="dashboard-ready"]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 15_000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
waitForSelector() resolves when the selector is present; with visible: true, it also waits for Puppeteer’s documented visibility condition. Visibility does not guarantee that every child element, image, or asynchronous widget has finished. Make the marker meaningful for the screenshot you need—for example, show it only after the main data view has rendered.
Wait for application-specific state
If readiness is represented by app state rather than the appearance of one element, use page.waitForFunction(). The predicate runs in the page context and is retried until it returns a truthy value or the wait times out.

await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const root = document.querySelector('#app');
return root?.getAttribute('data-state') === 'ready'
&& root.textContent.trim().length > 0;
}, { timeout: 15_000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
Use a state your application actually exposes; the example’s data-state attribute is illustrative, not a Puppeteer requirement. Puppeteer’s API documentation describes this method as waiting for the supplied function to return a truthy value when evaluated in the page’s context. See Page.waitForFunction.
Use network idleness as a secondary signal
You can combine a navigation-level network condition with a content-specific wait:

await page.goto('https://example.com/app', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="dashboard-ready"]', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
networkidle2 is a navigation option demonstrated in Puppeteer’s screenshot guide; a separate page.waitForNetworkIdle() API waits for network activity to settle. In the Puppeteer 25.12.0 documentation, its idle-time default is 500 ms and its concurrency default is 0. Those defaults are implementation settings, not evidence that a particular SPA is visually or functionally ready. Persistent polling or streaming connections can also make network-idle waits unsuitable. Consult Page.waitForNetworkIdle and WaitForNetworkIdleOptions.
Set timeouts and handle a missed readiness condition
Give waits a finite timeout so a missing marker or stalled app fails clearly rather than hanging indefinitely. Puppeteer’s current selector-wait options document a 30-second default; set a shorter or longer value to fit the workflow. A timeout of zero disables the timeout, which is usually a poor choice for unattended capture jobs. See WaitForSelectorOptions.

try {
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="dashboard-ready"]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 15_000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} catch (error) {
console.error('The dashboard did not become ready before the timeout:', error);
// Log or report the failed capture; do not silently save a loading screen.
}
For production capture, treat a timeout as a failed readiness check. Record the URL and error, and decide explicitly whether to retry, skip the capture, or save a diagnostic artifact. Avoid silently taking a screenshot after a failed wait: that can turn an incomplete page into an apparently successful result.
Choose the right screenshot target
Use page.screenshot() for the page, including a full-page capture when needed. If only one rendered component matters, target that element with ElementHandle.screenshot() instead of capturing unrelated page content. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide covers page and element screenshots.

Troubleshoot common SPA screenshot failures
- The screenshot shows a loading shell: Navigation likely completed before the app’s content did. Wait for a marker that appears with the intended view or a reliable app-state predicate.
- The selector wait succeeds too early: The selected element may exist before its content is populated, or may be visible while descendants are still loading. Choose a stronger marker or wait for the expected text/state with
waitForFunction(). - The selector never appears: Check that it matches the actual rendered page, that the app reaches the expected view, and that the wait is scoped to the correct page or frame. Selector waits on a frame work across navigations; an
ElementHandlewait is scoped to its current element. See Frame.waitForSelector and ElementHandle.waitForSelector. - The network-idle wait hangs or is misleading: Polling or streaming requests may prevent idleness, while an idle network can still precede client-side rendering. Prefer the app’s visible marker or explicit readiness state.
- The wait times out: Verify the app can load in the browser session and that the condition is genuinely reachable; then adjust the timeout only if the expected render time warrants it. Do not remove the timeout as a substitute for diagnosing a condition that never becomes true.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wait for a selector inside an iframe?
Use the relevant Puppeteer frame and its selector wait; frame selector waits work across navigations.
Does a visible selector guarantee images have loaded?
No. It confirms the selector’s documented visibility condition, not that every image or asynchronous asset is complete.

What does `waitForFunction()` return?
It resolves with the truthy value returned by the page-context function once the condition is met.
