The reliable way to make protein soda is to dissolve a clear whey powder in cold, still water first, let the foam settle, and add chilled sparkling water only at the end. Use a glass for the carbonated step and stir gently; never seal or shake a carbonated protein mixture.

This order solves both common problems: powder has time to hydrate before bubbles are introduced, and the finished drink is not agitated enough to release its carbonation or build a large foam cap.

The basic method at a glance

For one serving, begin with 8–12 fl oz (240–355 ml) of cold, still water and one scoop of clear whey isolate or a clear whey hydrolysate. Mix until no dry pockets remain, then leave the base undisturbed for about 30 seconds. Add 2–6 fl oz (60–180 ml) of chilled sparkling water slowly down the side of a large glass and stir once or twice with a spoon.

  • Use a clear-whey product intended to dissolve in water.
  • Put liquid in the container before the powder.
  • Use a shaker only for the uncarbonated base.
  • Rest the base before adding bubbles.
  • Add carbonation last and handle it as little as possible.

The 8–12 oz water range and 30-second settling period are the preparation points published in Ascent Protein’s Clear Whey guidance. The sparkling-water quantity is a practical starting range rather than a universal formula; adjust it after the base is fully dissolved.

Why protein soda clumps and foams

Clumps are incompletely hydrated powder

When powder lands on a small amount of liquid, the outside can wet immediately while the interior remains dry. Those damp pockets form lumps that are harder to break apart once carbonation is present. Starting with the full still-water portion gives each particle room to disperse and hydrate. Sprinkling the powder into the liquid, rather than dumping it onto the bottom of an empty shaker, also reduces compacted pockets.

A strainer insert or mixing ball can help with the still base. Optimum Nutrition’s instantized-whey label directions use roughly 30 seconds of mixing until dissolved, which is a useful minimum mixing window for an uncarbonated protein drink. The exact time depends on the powder, water temperature and scoop size; the important checkpoint is that no visible dry material remains before sparkling water is added.

Foam comes from air plus protein

Clear-whey proteins interact with both water and air. Ascent describes the protein structure as one that naturally foams when mixed or shaken. Vigorous shaking pulls air into the liquid, and proteins can stabilize the walls of those bubbles, so the foam does not disappear immediately when shaking stops.

Carbonated water adds a second gas source: dissolved carbon dioxide. Rapid agitation after carbonation encourages that gas to leave the liquid. The result is a large, fast-rising foam cap and a flatter drink. A published protein-beverage patent likewise reports that extensive agitation is unnecessary after carbonated water is added and that rapid agitation causes foaming.

Foam is not proof that the protein is spoiled

A temporary foam layer is normally a mixing effect. Letting the drink stand for another minute often reduces it without any further intervention. Persistent flakes, curds or a markedly sour change are different: those can indicate that the powder is not compatible with the drink’s acidity or concentration.

Choose a powder made for clear drinks

Clear whey isolate is the most suitable powder class for a transparent, soda-like drink. Clear whey is processed to produce a lighter beverage rather than the opaque, creamy texture associated with many conventional shakes. A clear whey hydrolysate designed for water can also work.

Gatorade’s Propel Clear Protein directions illustrate the same product category: one packet is mixed with 12–14 fl oz of water, and the listed protein sources are whey isolate and hydrolyzed whey. Follow the serving-size and allergen information on whichever product you use; do not assume that a scoop from a conventional shake mix has the same liquid requirement.

Powder type Expected appearance Dissolution and foam considerations Best use in protein soda
Clear whey isolate Clearer, lighter beverage Designed for water; still-water hydration followed by a short rest gives the best chance of a clean pour Preferred starting point
Clear whey hydrolysate or protein-water formula Usually transparent or lightly tinted Follow the packet or label water range; add carbonation only after the base is smooth Good alternative when the label identifies it as a clear drink
Standard creamy whey Cloudier drink May foam more or leave a thicker mouthfeel, depending on the formulation Use only if you accept a shake-like result
Casein-heavy blend or powder with thickeners Cloudier and potentially thicker More likely to behave unlike a transparent soda; formulation differences are substantial Not the first choice for a clear, fizzy drink

These are formulation tendencies, not a universal ranking of brands. Sweeteners, acids, flavors, gums and other ingredients can change both clarity and foam persistence. Check whether the package calls the product clear whey, clear protein or protein water, and use its stated serving instructions as the starting point.

Step-by-step kitchen method

1. Chill both liquids

Refrigerate the still water and sparkling water before mixing. Cold liquid keeps the finished drink more refreshing and helps you avoid warming it during a long mixing session. Do not use warm water unless the product label specifically requires it; warm liquid can make a foamy drink less pleasant and gives carbonation less protection once it is added.

2. Make the uncarbonated protein base

  1. Pour 8–12 fl oz (240–355 ml) of cold, still water into a shaker or mixing glass.
  2. Add one scoop of clear whey isolate or another clear-water protein product.
  3. Close the shaker and shake only the still mixture, or stir it vigorously in an open glass. A strainer insert or mixing ball can help break up remaining particles.
  4. Continue until there are no visible dry pockets. About 30 seconds is the mixing period used in instantized-whey label directions; use the visual result, not a stopwatch, as the final test.

Adding liquid first prevents powder from packing into the bottom. If you are using a spoon rather than a shaker, sprinkle the powder gradually while stirring rather than adding the whole scoop at once.

3. Let the foam collapse

Set the base aside for about 30 seconds. This pause allows the initial air bubbles to rise and break. It is easier to add sparkling water to a calm liquid than to a freshly shaken foam layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Move to a large glass

If the base was mixed in a shaker, pour it into a large glass before adding carbonation. The glass gives foam room to rise and removes the temptation to close and shake the completed drink. Leave headspace at the top; a nearly full glass is more likely to overflow when bubbles are introduced.

5. Add sparkling water slowly

Start with 2–6 fl oz (60–180 ml) of chilled sparkling water. Pour it down the inside wall of the glass in a thin stream rather than dropping it directly onto the surface. Begin at the low end if the protein powder is unfamiliar, then add more only if the flavor and fizz need adjustment.

6. Stir once or twice

Use a spoon for one or two gentle turns. Do not whisk, blend, or shake. The goal is to distribute the sparkling water, not to create a uniform froth. If a thin foam cap remains, wait another minute instead of agitating harder.

7. Drink soon after mixing

Serve immediately for the strongest carbonation. Every additional transfer, vigorous stir or period of standing gives more carbon dioxide an opportunity to escape.

How to adjust the ratio without losing the fizz

Keep the powder-to-still-water portion stable while you learn how the product behaves. The 8–12 fl oz range is the protein-base range; the 2–6 fl oz sparkling-water range controls how strongly the finished drink tastes and feels carbonated.

  • More intense protein flavor: Stay near the lower end of the still-water range, but dissolve the powder completely before adding bubbles.
  • Lighter flavor and more volume: Use more still water within the label’s range, then add sparkling water gradually.
  • More fizz: Add a larger amount of very cold sparkling water, but pour more slowly and stir less.
  • Less foam: Use less sparkling water at first and increase it in small additions rather than correcting an overfilled glass.

Do not infer a universal protein concentration or acidity limit from these amounts. Consumer powders differ, and the reviewed guidance does not establish one formula that guarantees zero foam or works with every product.

Preparation methods compared

Method Clump control Foam and carbonation behavior Equipment Pressure safety
Mix powder in still water, rest, then add sparkling water in a glass Strongest control because the powder hydrates before carbonation Low additional foam when poured slowly and stirred once or twice; best carbonation retention Shaker or mixing glass for the base, then a large serving glass Safe when the carbonated drink remains open
Put powder directly into sparkling water in an open glass Unreliable; dry pockets can form around bubbles High foam risk as powder and dissolved carbon dioxide are agitated together Glass and spoon No sealed-container pressure, but overflow is possible
Shake powder and sparkling water together in a sealed shaker May break some clumps, but at the cost of severe foaming Rapid agitation releases carbon dioxide and can flatten the drink Shaker Unsafe because pressure can force the lid open
Blend or whisk after carbonation Does not solve hydration problems created earlier Highest foam and carbonation loss Blender or whisk Do not use with a sealed carbonated container

Can you put protein powder in a SodaStream bottle?

Do not carbonate or shake a bottle that contains protein powder. Carbonate plain water in the equipment according to its instructions, release or remove the bottle as directed, and combine that water with the already-dissolved protein base in an open glass.

The pressure warning is explicit for ESN’s ISOCLEAR: it says the product should not be mixed with carbonated drinks in a shaker because carbonation can create pressure and, in the worst case, open the lid. The same physical risk applies to any tightly sealed container in which gas is generated or released during agitation. A bottle intended for carbonating water is not a reason to change the mixing order.

Troubleshooting common failures

Dry clumps remain at the bottom

  • Empty the water into the container before adding powder.
  • Sprinkle the powder over the surface instead of dropping one compact pile.
  • Use a strainer insert or mixing ball for the still base.
  • Allow hydration time before adding sparkling water.

If clumps persist, reduce the amount of powder in the next test or use the liquid volume printed on the label. Do not compensate by shaking the carbonated drink.

The drink produces a tall foam cap

  • Reduce shaking time for the still base and keep the 30-second rest.
  • Pour sparkling water down the glass wall.
  • Stir only once or twice with a spoon.
  • Wait for the foam to fall before adding more liquid.

Foam is driven by air incorporation and protein-stabilized bubbles, so more agitation usually makes the problem worse rather than fixing it.

The drink goes flat

Carbon dioxide is lost when the mixture is shaken, whisked or repeatedly poured. Add sparkling water later in the process, use it cold, and handle the finished drink gently. If you need more fizz, add a small extra pour of sparkling water at the side of the glass instead of stirring vigorously.

The powder forms flakes or appears to curdle

Carbonated drinks are acidic, and some powder formulations do not tolerate that environment well. First make the protein base in still water. If flakes still appear after carbonation, try a lower powder concentration and a product labeled as clear whey or protein water. The available guidance does not establish a universal pH threshold for every consumer powder, so a particular product’s label and observed compatibility matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The flavor is too acidic

Use less sparkling water and more still water within the product’s stated range, or choose a flavor whose acidity is less pronounced. Do not add extra powder to mask sourness; a higher powder load can make hydration and foaming harder.

The glass overflows

Use a larger glass, leave headspace, pour more slowly and pause if foam rises. Starting with the smaller 2 fl oz sparkling-water addition makes it easier to control the reaction of an unfamiliar powder.

What an industrial protein-soda formula teaches

The U.S. Dairy Export Council’s 2024 Sparkling Honey Lemon Protein Water formulation uses water, whey protein isolate, flavor, acid and an anti-foaming agent. Its 320 ml beverage specifies 192 g of carbonated water, cools the hydrated mixture to 5°C, and targets pH 3.0–3.1. That is an industrial formulation, not a recommendation to add food-grade anti-foaming chemicals to a home drink.

The useful home principle is the sequence: hydrate the protein with minimum agitation, cool the base, and add carbonated water only afterward. Industrial controls can manage ingredients and temperature more precisely than a kitchen; they do not make it sensible to shake a sealed carbonated protein mixture at home.

A practical decision checklist

  • Does the label identify the powder as clear whey, clear protein or protein water?
  • Does the label give a water range? Start there rather than borrowing a scoop-to-water ratio from another product.
  • Can you dissolve the powder completely in still water before adding carbonation?
  • Is the sparkling water cold and available to pour slowly?
  • Do you have a large open glass for the final mixing step?
  • Will you avoid sealing, shaking, blending or whisking after carbonation?

If the answer to each question is yes, the process is set up to minimize both clumps and foam. If a product still flakes or remains persistently cloudy, its formulation may simply be a poor match for a transparent carbonated drink.

Bottom line

Make the protein drink as a cold, still-water base, let its first foam settle, then add a small amount of chilled sparkling water down the side of an open glass and stir minimally. Clear whey is the most practical powder class, and a sealed shaker should never contain the carbonated mixture.
