The example described here updates all 64 pixels with the same color; it is a whole-panel response, not an individually animated pattern. Before wiring it, resolve an important conflict in the project instructions: the prose identifies D6 as the panel data pin, but the code defines PIN 0.
What the motion-reactive project does
The XIAO nRF52840 Sense reads motion using its 6-axis IMU: a three-axis accelerometer and a three-axis gyroscope. The Arduino example reads acceleration and gyroscope values, checks a threshold based on the sum of the absolute acceleration values, and maps the absolute X, Y, and Z acceleration values to red, green, and blue channels. It then sends the resulting color to each of the 64 pixels.
Because every pixel receives the same derived color, the panel changes as a single field of light. The example does not describe separate pixel positions, trails, or a directional animation.
Choose the board with the IMU
Use the XIAO nRF52840 Sense. Seeed says the standard XIAO nRF52840 does not include the IMU module, so it cannot run this example using an onboard motion sensor without adding a separate sensor.

- Embracing Open Source: As an open source hardware, it also supports popular projects of Arduino / CircuitPython / Micropython / tinyGo / Zephyr / Meshtastic / Amazon Sidewalk / QMK / ZMK / ThingSpeak
- Wireless Capabilities: Supports Bluetooth 5.0 BLE with onboard antenna, also provides NFC connectivity
- Elaborate Power Design: Provide ultra-low power consumption as 5μA in deep sleep mode while supporting lithium battery charge management
- Advanced onboard Functionality: Assemble additional digital microphone and 6-axis IMU in the tiny board for embedded Machine Learning applications
Seeed’s IMU guide describes the sensor as a 6-axis accelerometer and gyroscope and also notes an embedded temperature sensor. For the motion-to-color project, the relevant readings are acceleration and gyroscope data; the example’s color mapping uses acceleration.
Parts and electrical checks
- XIAO nRF52840 Sense: the board with the required onboard IMU.
- Addressable RGB NeoPixel-compatible panel: the project uses 64 pixels, but does not identify a panel model or provide its datasheet.
- USB-C data cable: a power-only cable will not upload code. Seeed warns that some USB Type-C cables lack data connections.
- Jumper wires: for the board-to-panel signal and power connections, following the panel and board specifications.
Do not assume that a 64-pixel panel is electrically interchangeable with another 64-pixel panel. Check the selected panel’s required supply voltage, data logic level, current draw, and power arrangement before connecting it. The project page does not establish those specifications or provide enough information to prescribe a safe power design.

- Powerful LoRa Performance: Long-range LoRa on Semtech SX1262, supports 868/915 MHz bands.
- Dual-core communication: It supports both Bluetooth and LoRa dual modes, enabling cross-domain interconnection.
- With dimensions of only 8mm × 22mm × 23mm, it features an integrated antenna design.
Install and verify the board and IMU
- Follow Seeed’s XIAO nRF52840 setup instructions to install the Arduino IDE board support. Seeed recommends the mbed-enabled board package for advanced IMU/PDM functionality. Package names and versions can change, so use the current instructions rather than relying on an old version number.
- Install the
Seeed_Arduino_LSM6DS3library as described in the Seeed IMU usage guide. - In Arduino IDE, open the
HighLevelExamplein the “Accelerometer And Gyroscope LSM6DS3” examples, upload it to the Sense board, and open Serial Monitor to confirm that sensor readings appear.
Checking the IMU on its own isolates sensor, board-package, and library problems before NeoPixel wiring or display code is added.
Resolve the NeoPixel data-pin mismatch before wiring
The Hackster project page has a discrepancy that must be corrected for the board package and panel you actually use: its prose says to connect panel DIN to D6, while its example code sets PIN 0. Those instructions are not interchangeable without confirming how the selected XIAO board package maps pin labels to code pin numbers.

- Choose the intended XIAO pin and confirm its Arduino identifier in the current board package or Seeed documentation.
- Set the code’s NeoPixel data-pin definition to that identifier.
- Connect the panel’s DIN to the matching physical pin, and check that the panel’s power and ground connections follow its datasheet.
- Verify the corrected wiring and code together before powering the panel.
The project page’s 64-pixel constant and generic panel description do not settle the correct pin mapping or panel power requirements.
Adapt the example’s software flow
The Hackster example lists Adafruit NeoPixel, Wire.h, Seeed nRF52 board libraries, and Adafruit Sensor among its software elements. Its code includes LSM6DS3.h and Wire.h, initializes the sensor over I2C at address 0x6A, reads acceleration and gyroscope values, and calls a visualization function to update the pixels.

Use that flow as a starting point, not as a guarantee of compatibility with every current board package or library version. Validate the example after selecting the board package, IMU library, NeoPixel library, pin identifier, and panel. The project article discusses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) phone control as an extension, but the supplied code and setup do not implement or document that feature. Treat BLE control as a separate addition rather than an included step in the motion-reactive LED example.
