You can make most horror games substantially less stressful by matching each problem to the right setting. Lower effects or music for sudden audio, enable warnings or hide-content tools for disturbing scenes, disable camera shake and motion blur for physical discomfort, raise brightness for dark areas, and use easier difficulty or aim assistance when combat pressure is the issue. There is no universal “less scary” switch, and the available controls differ by game, platform and version.
Start with the specific thing that is overwhelming you, change one group of settings, then test the result in a safe area. The guide below covers the options most likely to help, how to find them, and what their limitations are.
Identify the kind of stress you want to reduce
“Scary” can describe several different experiences. A person who is distressed by gore needs different controls from someone who becomes motion-sick during a chase. Before changing settings, name the trigger as precisely as possible.

Change only the relevant group at first. If you alter every option simultaneously, you will not know which setting solved the problem, and you may accidentally make dialogue, navigation or combat information harder to read.

Use content warnings and filters for specific triggers
Read warnings before starting
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 123 says players should receive accessible descriptions of potentially distressing content and warnings before encountering it. Its stated goal is to make players aware of material that may affect their mental health or well-being before it appears in play. When a game provides a content or accessibility guide, read it before beginning rather than waiting for a surprise.
A warning supports an informed choice; it does not automatically remove the scene. Look for separate controls labelled content warnings, sensitive-content warnings, hide content, reduce disturbing content, scene skip or bypass. Labels and placement differ between titles and can change after a patch.
Understand what a warning can and cannot do
Some games warn you and then let you continue unchanged. Others let you hide an image, alter a presentation or skip a sequence. Microsoft’s guideline recommends that a bypass remain available even after an event has started, so a player who did not anticipate a trigger can still continue the rest of the game.
Dead Space demonstrates two distinct approaches. Its optional warnings describe an upcoming disturbing scene. Its hide-content mode places a blur over the visuals while the scene’s audio continues. The options are disabled by default, so you must enable them yourself. If sound is also a trigger, a visual filter alone will not be sufficient; pause and leave the scene, lower the relevant audio channel or use a skip option if one exists.
Look for presentation-safe modes
A targeted mode can change appearance without changing the challenge. Grounded’s “Arachnophobia Safe Mode,” cited in Microsoft’s guideline, changes how spiders are presented without changing gameplay or difficulty. This is useful when a particular animal or shape is the problem but you still want the original mechanics.
Use the narrowest filter that solves your problem. A broad reduction may remove context you need, while a targeted mode can preserve story and level design. If the game offers no filter or bypass, an external content guide or a trusted spoiler-light chapter list can help you decide when to pause, but it cannot alter what the game displays.

Reduce startling audio without losing dialogue
Separate the four audio channels
Open Audio, Sound or Accessibility and check whether music, sound effects, dialogue and cinematics have independent sliders. Redfall documents all four channels. Lower sound effects first when the problem is a sudden sting, creature roar or impact. Lower music if rising tension is the issue. Keep dialogue high enough to follow the story, and adjust cinematics separately if cutscenes are disproportionately loud.
Make changes while standing in a safe area, then test a normal encounter. Some games apply sliders immediately; others require leaving the menu or reloading a scene. Headphones can make directional cues clearer but can also make peaks feel harsher, so use the setup that lets you keep the volume comfortable rather than treating headphones as a requirement.
Replace audio-only information with text
Enable subtitles or closed captions even if hearing itself is not a concern. Captions can identify a speaker before a line, clarify quiet dialogue and reduce the need to listen for every ambient cue. Increase text size and enable a subtitle background or window when the game offers those controls. Speaker names are especially useful during overlapping conversations.
Caption coverage is game-specific. Redfall’s guide explicitly says its closed captions cover a subset of sounds, not every possible effect. A caption that says “door creaks” does not guarantee that every distant footstep, enemy movement or musical sting will be labelled. Treat captions as an additional channel, not a complete replacement for sound.
Consider vibration separately
Controller vibration can turn an audio surprise into a physical jolt. Disable it or reduce its intensity in Controller, Haptics or Accessibility settings. If you rely on vibration for a gameplay cue, test a low intensity first; otherwise, turning it off removes the cue without affecting visual controls.

Disable shake and head bob
Camera shake and head bob simulate movement by moving the viewpoint independently of your actual input. Redfall notes that disabling both may help players with motion-related discomfort. Turn them off before changing other visual options, because they are common causes of nausea during sprinting, impacts and scripted events.

Turn off blur, chromatic aberration and film grain
Motion blur smears the image when the camera turns. Chromatic aberration adds colored fringes near the edges, and film grain overlays a moving texture. Blizzard’s DOOM guide documents controls for these effects and notes that disabling chromatic aberration can reduce discomfort. Turn off one effect at a time if you want to identify the cause, or disable all three when you already know that post-processing is uncomfortable.
Adjust FOV gradually
Field of view changes how much of the scene fits on screen. A narrow FOV can feel zoomed-in and amplify the sensation of turning; a very wide FOV can create edge distortion or make motion feel faster. Redfall exposes a 60–120 FOV range. DOOM likewise presents wider and narrower FOV as player comfort choices.
Move the slider in small increments, play for several minutes and stop if discomfort increases. There is no universally correct number. Your display size, viewing distance, frame rate and personal sensitivity all affect the result. If a game offers separate horizontal and vertical FOV controls, change only the axis that is causing a problem.
Raise brightness or gamma without destroying contrast
Increase brightness or gamma until you can navigate a dark room and distinguish doors, stairs and hazards, then stop before blacks become gray. Redfall and DOOM both document brightness or gamma controls. Use the game’s calibration image when available instead of setting the slider to its maximum. A brighter image improves navigation but does not remove the underlying horror content.
Lower combat and input pressure
Choose a more forgiving difficulty
When the stressful part is being chased, aiming, parrying or managing scarce resources, select an easier difficulty or a combat-assistance mode. DOOM’s documented difficulty presets change factors such as parry windows, enemy damage, enemy aggression and resource availability. Those changes can reduce time pressure without requiring you to mute the entire game.
Redfall offers four difficulty levels plus aim and input controls. Its guide warns that changing difficulty may require reloading for existing enemies to be affected. If a setting appears not to work, finish or restart the current encounter, reload the checkpoint or restart the game as the instructions specify.

Use aim assistance and threat indicators
Aim assistance can reduce the stress of tracking a fast enemy or making precise shots while frightened. Look for aim slowdown, target snap, aim smoothing or an assistance strength slider. Some games also offer visual indicators for combat sounds. DOOM documents visual indicators for some sound effects and a threat-detection mode, giving you information that would otherwise arrive through audio.

These aids can change how much information is visible on screen. If indicators feel distracting, reduce their size or enable them only for threats rather than every sound.
Replace demanding holds and repeated presses
Dead Space supports complete input remapping, one-button quick-time events, toggle modes for sprint and aim, aim assistance and a persistent center dot. Use a toggle when holding a trigger or stick click causes fatigue, and use one-button quick-time events when repeated presses make a scene stressful rather than engaging.
Redfall documents remapping and sprint-toggle controls as well. Map essential actions to reachable buttons, avoid placing two critical actions on the same input and test the layout in a safe area before a major encounter. Captions, speaker labels and visual threat indicators let you reduce reliance on sudden sounds while retaining useful information. Start with subtitles, then add a background and larger text if the words disappear against dark scenes. Enable speaker names when multiple characters talk at once.

Redfall’s caption documentation limits coverage, and a visual indicator in one game says nothing about another. Test a quiet section and a combat section separately. If you cannot tell where an enemy is without audio, keep effects at a comfortable level and lower only music or vibration rather than muting the entire mix.

A practical setup sequence before your first session
- Read the available guide. Check the title’s accessibility menu, content-warning page and platform documentation before starting. Note whether warnings, filters or skips can be used after a scene begins.
- Enable text support. Turn on subtitles or closed captions, increase text size, add a subtitle background and show speaker names when available.
- Balance audio. Lower music and effects separately from dialogue and cinematics. Set a comfortable master volume before putting on headphones.
- Remove uncomfortable effects. Disable camera shake, head bob, motion blur, chromatic aberration, film grain and vibration if they cause discomfort. Re-enable any effect that you need for orientation.
- Calibrate the image. Raise brightness or gamma enough to navigate dark areas. Adjust FOV in small steps and test each change for several minutes.
- Reduce encounter pressure. Select an easier difficulty, combat assistance, aim assistance or a threat-detection mode. Check whether the game requires a reload for the change to affect enemies already present.
- Remap strenuous inputs. Replace difficult holds with toggles, enable one-button quick-time events and move essential actions to comfortable buttons. Check for adaptive-controller support if you need an alternative input method.
- Keep an exit plan. Know the pause and quit buttons, use a warning before entering a known trigger and stop immediately if a scene becomes overwhelming. Resume only when you choose to, not because the game has started an unskippable sequence.
How to compare accessibility between two horror games
If you are choosing between titles, compare the controls rather than relying on a general “accessibility” label. The following questions reveal meaningful differences:
- Do warnings appear before a scene, during it, or both?
- Can disturbing content be hidden, visually altered or skipped, and can that choice be made after the scene starts?
- Are music, effects, dialogue and cinematics controlled by separate sliders?
- Do captions include sound effects, speaker names and directional information, and does the guide state what they exclude?
- Can camera shake, head bob, blur, FOV, brightness and vibration be adjusted independently?
- Can difficulty, aim assistance, remapping and toggle controls be changed during an existing save?
- Does the game document support for alternative hardware such as an adaptive controller on your platform?
Look for a current official guide for the exact platform and edition. A console release, PC build and regional version can expose different labels or options, and patches can move settings between menus.
Troubleshoot settings that do not seem to work
The option is missing
Check every likely location: Accessibility, Audio, Video, Camera, Gameplay, Controls and Content Warnings. Some games show advanced controls only after selecting an accessibility preset. Confirm that you are changing the setting in the correct profile or save slot, and verify that your platform version includes the feature.

Reload the checkpoint or restart the encounter. Redfall’s guide specifically warns that a difficulty change may require a reload before existing enemies are affected. If the game still behaves the same, look for a separate combat-assistance slider rather than assuming the difficulty control failed.
Captions are incomplete
That may be the documented behavior rather than a bug. Redfall states that closed captions cover only a subset of sounds. Keep effects at a tolerable level, enable any available visual threat indicators and use speaker labels or subtitles for dialogue.
The picture is brighter but still hard to read
Adjust display brightness or HDR separately from the game’s gamma, if both are available. A very wide FOV, heavy film grain or low contrast can also obscure detail. Revisit those controls instead of pushing gamma to its maximum.
You still feel sick or panicked
Pause and leave the game. Remove the remaining movement effects, lower the audio further and try a short session in a safe area. If the title does not provide a needed filter or bypass, it may not be a suitable experience for you at that time; accessibility settings are tools, not a requirement to endure a trigger.
What these settings cannot guarantee
Options are title-specific and can change with patches, platform versions and regional releases. A warning may describe a scene without hiding it. A blur filter may conceal visuals while leaving audio intact. Captions may omit effects. Easier difficulty can reduce combat pressure but cannot remove suspense, darkness or story themes. Brightness and FOV changes improve comfort and orientation, not the game’s underlying content.
Use the current official guide and the in-game menu for the exact edition you own. Set up the controls before a stressful chapter, keep a pause plan and treat every setting as adjustable: the best configuration is the one that lets you control when and how you engage with the game.
