To make Google Maps easier to use, turn on your device’s screen reader for spoken feedback, increase text or display size in accessibility settings, and adjust map zoom separately. Google Maps also has an optional Detailed voice guidance setting for walking navigation. The steps differ slightly by platform.
Choose the right control for what you need
| Goal | Android | iPhone or iPad | Computer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spoken feedback | Turn on TalkBack in device accessibility settings. Google Maps Help | Turn on VoiceOver in device accessibility settings. Google Maps Help | Use a supported screen reader and browser combination. Google Maps Help |
| Larger words or interface items | Use Font size or Display size in device accessibility settings. Google Maps Help | Use the device’s text-size accessibility controls. Google Maps Help | Not stated in the cited Google Maps accessibility instructions. |
| More detailed walking announcements | Enable Detailed voice guidance in Maps navigation settings. Google Maps Help | Enable Detailed voice guidance in Maps navigation settings. Google Maps Help | Not stated in the cited Google Maps accessibility instructions. |
| Magnify or move around the map | Double-tap and drag on the map to zoom; use touch gestures to explore. | Double-tap and drag on the map to zoom; use touch gestures to explore. | Focus the map with Tab, then use arrow keys and plus/minus. |
These controls solve different problems: text size enlarges labels or interface text where supported, while map zoom changes the visible area. A screen reader provides spoken feedback rather than enlarging the map.
Android: enable TalkBack, enlarge text, or add walking detail
Turn on TalkBack
- Open the device’s Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > TalkBack and turn TalkBack on. The exact path can vary by device and Android version; Google provides TalkBack setup guidance and notes that steps may differ by device.
TalkBack is Android’s screen reader, and Google Maps supports it. If the setting names do not match, look for TalkBack under Accessibility in your device settings.
Increase text or display size
- Open Settings > Accessibility.
- Choose Font size to enlarge words, or Display size to enlarge interface items.
Google says these settings can make Maps labels easier to see. Android’s font enlargement applies where an app uses scalable text, and constrained layouts can crop enlarged text. Android recommends checking interfaces at the largest accessibility font size and, where available, in portrait and landscape; this is general Android guidance, not a claim that a particular Maps screen will crop. See Android’s accessibility feature guidance.
