To make Google Chrome your default browser, choose the instructions for your device: Windows uses Default apps settings, while macOS and Linux have a Make default control in Chrome Settings. On Android, iPhone, and iPad, you can use Chrome’s default-browser setting or the device’s system settings.
When Chrome is the default browser, links open automatically in Chrome, although some countries may prompt you to choose a default browser.

- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Search for and select Google Chrome.
- Select Set default beside Make Google Chrome your default browser.
You can review the file-type and link-type assignments shown on Chrome’s Default apps page if you want to confirm what changed.
Make Chrome the default browser in Windows 10
- Open Start, then Settings.
- Open Default apps. Depending on your Windows layout, this may be under System or Apps.
- Under Web browser, select the browser currently displayed.
- Select Google Chrome from the app list.
Make Chrome the default browser on a Mac or Linux computer
- Open Google Chrome.
- Select the three-dot More menu, then Settings.
- Find the Default browser section.
- Select Make default.
If the Make default button is not shown, Google says Chrome is already your default browser.

Make Chrome the default browser on Android
- Open Chrome and tap the More menu.
- Tap Make Chrome default. You can also open Settings and then Default browser.
- Select Chrome.
You can also open your device’s Settings and look for Apps, Default apps, or Choose default apps. Open Browser app and select Chrome. The labels can vary by device.
Make Chrome the default browser on iPhone or iPad
Google’s instructions require iOS 14 or later. If the default-browser option is missing, Google recommends updating Chrome.

- Install and open Chrome.
- In Chrome, tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Default Browser, then Go to Settings.
- Tap Default Browser App and select Chrome.
Why might the Make default button be missing?
On a computer, Google says that if Chrome’s Make default button is not shown, Chrome is already the default browser. On iPhone or iPad, check that your device is running iOS 14 or later and update Chrome if the option is missing.
Default browser versus search engine
Your default browser determines which app opens web links. It does not automatically change the search engine you use in Chrome. To change that setting, open Chrome’s Settings, select Search engine, and choose your preferred provider.

Can I make Chrome the default browser on an iPhone or iPad?
