If FFmpeg exits when the internet drops, it will not restart itself just because you add HTTP -reconnect options to an RTMPS output. Use a process supervisor to relaunch FFmpeg after it terminates, keep YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key configured securely, and rehearse a deliberate disconnect before relying on recovery during a church service. A restart can restore the feed, but YouTube does not guarantee that every restart will rejoin the same live event.
Will FFmpeg reconnect to YouTube Live?
It depends on what failed. A brief transport interruption and an FFmpeg process that has exited are different problems, and neither guarantees that YouTube will resume the intended live event.
- FFmpeg is still running: inspect its output and logs. FFmpeg’s documented
reconnect,reconnect_at_eof,reconnect_on_network_errorand related retry options belong to the HTTP protocol. They do not establish automatic reconnection for an RTMPS output. See the FFmpeg HTTP protocol options. - FFmpeg has exited: a process supervisor can launch it again. This restarts the command; it is not the same as reconnecting the existing RTMPS transport.
- FFmpeg restarts but the event does not recover: check the endpoint, key, event state and YouTube’s stream health. A continuing internet outage or a rejected key will not be fixed by repeated restarts.
FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation describes reconnect as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” That description is scoped to HTTP, not a general RTMPS-output recovery promise.
How do I make FFmpeg restart after the internet drops?
For an unattended church stream, run the known-good FFmpeg command under an operating-system service manager or another supervisor configured to restart it after failure. Set a delay between attempts, retain logs, and make sure the command can be safely run again from the beginning. The exact service-manager configuration depends on your operating system, account, command, environment and file paths; do not copy a generic configuration without adapting and testing it.

- Confirm the command works manually. Test the full input and output path before adding supervision. Record the expected FFmpeg exit behavior and where its logs appear. Restarting the process can also restart inputs and encoders, so ensure doing so is acceptable for your capture setup.
- Configure supervision for the correct command and user. Have the supervisor launch the same tested command and restart it when it exits. Add a short retry delay so a persistent error does not create a rapid restart loop. Choose shutdown behavior that stops the child FFmpeg process cleanly when the supervisor or machine stops.
- Keep logs and secrets separate. Retain enough FFmpeg output to diagnose failures, but do not put the stream key in public scripts, shared repositories or routine logs. Restrict access to configuration files that contain it.
- Test an intentional disconnect. During rehearsal, interrupt the encoder’s network connection or stop the primary encoder, observe whether FFmpeg exits, and confirm that the supervisor relaunches it. Then check that YouTube receives audio and video again.
- Confirm the event in YouTube Studio. Check the Live Control Room preview, event state and stream health after the restart. Have a person ready to take over if the expected event does not resume.
A restart policy handles process termination; it cannot guarantee recovery from a long ISP outage, invalid credentials, an incompatible stream configuration or YouTube-side event changes. The official guidance does not specify a universal disconnect grace period or promise same-event continuation.
What FFmpeg reconnect options actually cover
FFmpeg command-line options are positional: an option applies to the relevant input or output group. Do not place an HTTP option before an RTMPS output as if it controlled that output. If your command has an HTTP input, HTTP reconnect options may be relevant to that input, subject to the installed FFmpeg build and the specific failure.

The HTTP protocol documentation includes options for reconnecting before EOF, treating EOF as an error for live or endless HTTP streams, reconnecting on certain network errors, filtering HTTP status codes, setting retry delays and limits, and honoring Retry-After. These are HTTP behaviors, not proof that RTMPS publishing will reconnect.

Option availability and defaults can vary by FFmpeg version and distribution build. For example, the FFmpeg 8.0 HTTP source lists defaults for reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_total_max and respect_retry_after; do not assume those defaults apply to an older or differently built installation. Check YouTube’s RTMPS settings and protect the key
- Open your stream setup in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and retrieve the encoder’s server URL and stream key.
- Use the RTMPS URL supplied there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a TLS-encrypted extension of RTMP; do not assume a visible default RTMP URL is the correct endpoint. See YouTube’s encoder settings and RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes a stream key as password-like: it lets YouTube accept the feed. Do not publish it or commit it to a shared code repository.
- After a restart, verify the actual event and stream health in Live Control Room rather than assuming that a successful FFmpeg launch means the audience can see the stream.
How to rehearse recovery before a service
YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time, checking the preview, monitoring stream health and testing failover. Its guidance for testing a primary encoder includes stopping it or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. For a church, rehearse the complete recovery path rather than only checking that the command starts.

- Run a short test stream and confirm the initial picture and sound in YouTube’s preview.
- Interrupt the encoder’s network connection deliberately; note whether FFmpeg stays alive or exits.
- If it exits, confirm the supervisor’s delay, restart and log behavior.
- Confirm that video and audio return to the intended event, and inspect YouTube’s stream health.
- Assign a human operator to respond if automated recovery does not work. For greater resilience, YouTube’s failover guidance also describes testing a backup encoder and confirming that the player rolls over; this is a more involved setup than restarting one process.
YouTube advises: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See its live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot a stream that still will not return
FFmpeg exits repeatedly
Use the retained logs to identify whether the input, output or host is failing. If the supervisor restarts rapidly, increase the retry delay and correct the underlying error rather than letting the process loop indefinitely.

FFmpeg runs, but YouTube receives no feed
Check that the command is publishing to the RTMPS server URL and key currently shown for the intended event. Confirm the output settings and inspect the YouTube preview and stream health. HTTP reconnect options do not establish recovery for an RTMPS output.
The event does not resume after a successful process restart
Check the Live Control Room event state and rehearse whether that event accepts a restarted encoder. YouTube’s official pages do not promise that every interruption will rejoin the same event.
Drops continue after recovery
Investigate the upstream connection, available upload capacity and local network stability. YouTube recommends an upload-speed test and monitoring stream health. A process supervisor can retry after a drop, but repeated retries do not stabilize an unreliable connection.
