To make videos in an OBS playlist appear consistently sized in a scene, add them as a VLC Video Source, set the scene’s canvas and output resolutions, then apply Transform → Fit to Screen to the source. This scales the displayed video without changing its proportions. It does not change the resolution encoded in the original files.
What “the same resolution” means in OBS
There are two different things you might mean by “the same resolution”: the dimensions of the video files themselves, or how those videos appear in your OBS scene. OBS can scale a playlist source to fit the scene canvas, but that does not rewrite or re-encode each file.
- Base (Canvas) Resolution sets the workspace where you arrange and size scene sources.
- Output (Scaled) Resolution sets the dimensions OBS uses for the stream or recording.
- Source transform controls the placement and scale of a selected source on the canvas.
Changing the output resolution alone does not apply a separate sizing adjustment to each playlist video.
Set up and size the VLC playlist source
- Add the playlist: In the OBS Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video Source. Add the media files to its playlist. If VLC Video Source is not available, install VLC; OBS requires it for this source.
- Choose the scene workspace: Open Settings → Video and set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the dimensions you want to use when arranging sources.
- Choose the stream or recording size: In the same Settings → Video panel, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the intended output dimensions. This controls the stream or recording output; it is not a substitute for sizing the source on the canvas.
- Fit the playlist source: Select the VLC Video Source, then right-click it in the Sources dock or preview and choose Transform → Fit to Screen. The OBS transform shortcut is Ctrl+F on Windows and Cmd+F on macOS.
- Check different playlist items: Preview several videos, particularly portrait, square, and 4:3 clips in a 16:9 scene. Fit to Screen keeps each image’s proportions, so a clip with a different aspect ratio may leave bars or unused canvas space.
Choose the right transform for your playlist

| Stretch to Screen | Fills the canvas, which can change the image’s proportions. | Edge-to-edge coverage matters more than preserving the image shape. |
| Center to Screen | Centers the source; it does not make every item fill the canvas or appear the same size. | You want centered placement and can accept differences in apparent size. |
For mixed aspect ratios, Fit to Screen is usually the safer choice: it avoids distortion, though the visible image will not always touch every canvas edge. Stretch to Screen fills the frame but can make people or objects look unnaturally wide or tall.

If you need identical dimensions in the actual files
Use a video editor or transcoder to normalize the files before adding them to OBS. A scene transform changes how OBS renders the VLC source; it does not make the underlying files share identical pixel dimensions.
Troubleshooting playlist sizing
- A video has bars or empty space: Its aspect ratio differs from the canvas. Keep Fit to Screen to preserve the image, or choose Stretch to Screen if filling the frame is more important than accurate proportions.
- A video looks distorted: The source may be stretched to the canvas. Select the VLC Video Source and apply Transform → Fit to Screen.
- Videos are centered but look different in size: Centering changes position, not scale. Use Fit to Screen to fit the source within the canvas.
- The stream or recording has the wrong dimensions: Check Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution. Then check the source transform separately if the video is also incorrectly sized within the scene.
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, which OBS requires for that source to appear. Exact behavior can vary by OBS and VLC build; the available documentation does not establish identical playlist resizing behavior for every version.
An OBS forum user reported success with Fit to Screen or Center to Screen for a mixed-aspect-ratio VLC playlist. That is a practical report, not a guarantee for every file or software setup.
