Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To make a multi-file OBS playlist restart automatically, add the files to an OBS VLC Video Source and leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents this setting as on by default; it restarts the source after the playlist runs out of media files. This loops the videos, but it does not guarantee that OBS, your computer, your internet connection, or the YouTube stream stays online.
Set up a playlist that repeats in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source. Match the versions: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene you plan to stream, add a VLC Video Source, open its properties, and add the media files to the playlist.
- Enable looping. Make sure Loop Playlist is checked. OBS documents it as on by default; its purpose is to restart the source when it has run out of media files. OBS media source documentation
- Choose the order. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the files to play in randomized order. OBS documents shuffle as off by default.
- Keep the source visible. With the default visibility behavior, OBS stops playback while the source is not visible and restarts it when it becomes visible. Keep the source visible in the active scene if you expect it to play continuously. Visibility behavior is separate from playlist looping. OBS media source documentation
Choose the right OBS source
Use VLC Video Source for several files in a playlist. For a single file, OBS’s Media Source has its own Loop setting. That single-file control is not the same as Loop Playlist, which applies to the VLC source.
| What you want to play | OBS source | Loop control |
|---|---|---|
| One media file | Media Source | Loop |
| Several media files | VLC Video Source | Loop Playlist |
Send the OBS output to YouTube Live
Playlist looping and stream delivery are separate. After configuring the source and scene, configure YouTube Live as OBS’s destination: enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder, then start sending output from the encoder. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the exact controls in your OBS version. YouTube encoder setup
The stream key connects the encoder to your YouTube stream; it does not control whether the playlist loops. Keep it private, and use the key for the intended stream.

What looping does—and does not—keep running
- Playlist loop: restarts the VLC source after it reaches the end of its media files.
- Stream continuity: still depends on OBS continuing to run, the computer staying powered, and a working internet connection that can deliver the encoder output to YouTube. Loop Playlist does not automatically recover a failed computer, encoder, or network connection.
- YouTube archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if the broadcast archive matters. YouTube: Archive live streams
- Viewer rewind: DVR rewind and pause may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers they can rewind the full length of an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube: Use DVR controls on live streams
Troubleshoot a playlist that will not repeat
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then check that its bitness matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The list ends and stays stopped: Open the VLC Video Source properties and check Loop Playlist.
- Playback stops after changing scenes: Check whether the source is visible in the active scene. The default behavior stops playback when hidden and restarts it when visible.
- The files play in an unexpected order: Check Shuffle Playlist. Turn it off for a non-random order.
- The playlist loops but the YouTube stream is offline: Check the encoder output, OBS status, computer power, and internet connection. Playlist looping alone does not restore a dropped stream.
