To make an image have no background, isolate the subject with a background-removal tool, inspect the resulting mask, and export with transparency enabled. For most raster images, that means saving a PNG rather than a JPEG. A white-looking editor canvas is not proof that the file is transparent: place the exported image over a colored layer or open it in another editor to verify.
What “no background” actually means
A background-free image is a cutout whose pixels outside the subject are transparent (an alpha channel), not white. Transparency lets the subject appear over any color, texture, slide, webpage, or video background. The removal tool creates a selection or layer mask; it does not guarantee that every hair, translucent edge, reflection, or gap between objects is perfect.
- Transparent: empty areas contain no visible color and reveal whatever is behind the image.
- White background: white pixels remain in the file and will cover the design behind them.
- Flattened format: JPEG cannot preserve transparency; use PNG for a practical transparent raster export.
Before you start: choose a suitable source
Automatic removal works best when the subject contrasts clearly with its surroundings. Adobe Photoshop Help states: “For best results, use high-contrast images.” A sharply focused subject, even lighting, and a simple background usually produce fewer edge repairs than a low-contrast or heavily compressed photo.
- Use the highest-resolution original available.
- Avoid enlarging a tiny, blurry image before removing its background.
- Check hair, fur, glass, smoke, shadows, and holes between limbs or objects in advance; these areas commonly need manual refinement.
Method 1: Remove a background in Adobe Photoshop
- Open the image and select its layer in the Layers panel.
- Make sure the subject layer is active and unlocked. If it is locked, click the lock control before editing.
- Open the Discover panel with the workspace search icon, or choose Help > Photoshop Help.
- Choose Browse > Quick Actions > Remove Background.
- Photoshop isolates the subject and creates a transparent result or a layer mask that is ready for compositing.
- Zoom in around the outline. If the edge is wrong, click the layer mask and paint with the Brush tool: white reveals masked pixels, black conceals them, and a soft, low-opacity brush can make gradual corrections.
- Toggle the original layer or a temporary solid-color layer behind the subject to find halos and missed background patches. Inspect hair, fur, fingers, thin straps, and spaces inside the subject rather than checking only the outer silhouette.
- Save a layered PSD if you may need further edits. Export a PNG when you need a standalone transparent image.
Refining a Photoshop mask
Work non-destructively on the mask instead of erasing pixels from the original layer. Use a hard brush for crisp product edges and a smaller, softer brush for hair or fabric. If a light fringe remains, paint carefully on the mask while viewing the subject against a dark and then a light temporary background. Keep the source layer hidden or duplicated so you can recover from an over-edited edge.

Method 2: Remove a background in Canva
Canva’s Help Center documents Background Remover as a paid-plan feature. The feature is available from the editor and includes brushes for correcting the automatic result.
- Open a design and add the photo.
- Select the photo, then choose BG Remover from the toolbar.
- Wait for processing to finish.
- Choose Erase to remove background pixels the automatic result retained, or Restore to bring back subject pixels that were removed.
- Zoom in and check the outline, internal gaps, hair, fur, and translucent details.
- Delete any separate background element in the design; removing the photo’s background does not remove a colored shape, frame, or other object behind it.
Canva’s documented processing limits
For Canva’s bulk workflow from Projects, the Help Center specifies up to 50 images per folder operation. Only uploaded images are processed in that workflow. Each photo must be under 9 MB, and photos above 10 megapixels are downscaled to 10 megapixels. Canva also notes that the remover may fail to detect a clear subject. These are product constraints, not general image-quality statistics.
Export a genuinely transparent file
Canva export steps
- Click Share > Download.
- Set File type to PNG.
- Turn on Transparent background.
- Download the file and verify it independently.
Canva documents transparent-background export for Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits plans. Canva Docs cannot be downloaded with a transparent background. If the toggle is unavailable, confirm that your account and design type support it.
Photoshop export choices
Use File > Export > Export As, choose PNG, and keep transparency enabled. Preserve the PSD separately if the mask may need adjustment. Do not use JPEG for the final cutout: JPEG fills transparent areas with a color and cannot store an alpha channel.

How to verify transparency
- Place the PNG over a bright color and then a dark color. The background should change without a white rectangle.
- Open the file in a second image editor or design application.
- Check that the file is PNG and that no opaque background layer was included at export.
- Remember that checkerboards and white canvases are display conventions; they are not themselves evidence of what the file contains.

Choose Photoshop when you need an editable mask, detailed edge work, or a layered production file. Choose Canva when the cutout will immediately be placed in a Canva design and your plan includes the required tools. Neither option should be judged from the first automatic result alone; inspect and repair the edge.
Troubleshooting common problems
The exported image still has a white rectangle
You probably exported JPEG, left a background layer visible, or downloaded without the transparent-background setting. Reopen the source, hide or delete the background element, select PNG, enable transparency where offered, and test the new file over a colored layer.
Hair or fur looks clipped
Zoom in and refine the mask with a smaller brush. Alternate between light and dark temporary backgrounds so you can see both light and dark halos. A higher-contrast source generally gives the automatic selection more information.
Gaps between limbs or objects remain filled
Paint those areas out on the Photoshop mask, or use Canva’s Erase brush. Check internal holes separately from the outer outline; automatic tools can identify the main silhouette while missing enclosed background.

The tool removes part of the subject
Use Photoshop’s mask brush to reveal the missing pixels or Canva’s Restore brush. Work at a high zoom and reduce brush size near narrow details.
Canva does not show BG Remover or Transparent background
Canva documents both capabilities as paid-plan features, and transparent export is not available for Canva Docs. Confirm the design type and account plan, or use an editor that provides an equivalent mask and PNG export.
The automatic result fails completely
Use a clearer, higher-contrast source with the subject separated from the background. If the subject is not visually distinct, manual selection may be faster than repeatedly rerunning the automatic feature.
