FFmpeg’s concat demuxer has no documented option to skip a playlist entry when opening it fails. The reliable approach is to check the playlist entries first, omit missing or unreadable files, and give FFmpeg a filtered concat script. If a file exists but FFmpeg cannot parse it, add a probe step. This is a preflight workflow, not a concat-demuxer skip switch.
Why FFmpeg does not skip a failed playlist entry
The concat demuxer reads a script containing files and directives, then demuxes those files in sequence as though their packets had been muxed together; it adjusts timestamps between entries. The documented options include safe, auto_convert, and segment_time_metadata, but none is documented as telling the demuxer to ignore an input-open failure and continue. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed in your environment because the official documentation is rolling: FFmpeg all-in-one documentation.
The safe option controls which playlist paths and directives are accepted, not whether the referenced media can be opened. Its default is 1; setting -safe 0 permits filenames that would otherwise be rejected, but it cannot make a missing or unreadable file work. Likewise, auto_convert is not a general repair or skip option. FFmpeg documents its current conversion for H.264 in MP4 as adding the H.264 MP4-to-Annex-B bitstream filter, particularly useful when resolutions change.
Filter the playlist before starting FFmpeg
Generate a new concat script from the source playlist rather than passing every original row through unchanged. Test each entry in the same environment where FFmpeg will run, then write only the entries that pass. This prevents a missing or unreadable path from being handed to the concat demuxer; it does not guarantee that the remaining files are compatible with one another.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Read the source playlist. Keep its intended order, but do not use it directly as the final concat script.
- Check each path. Confirm that the file exists and is readable by the account and process that will run FFmpeg. Omit entries that fail either check.
- Probe files when needed. A file can exist and be readable at the filesystem level yet still contain media FFmpeg cannot parse. Run an FFmpeg probe or preflight for each entry and omit files that fail. This is a workflow recommendation, not a documented concat-demuxer feature.
- Write a filtered concat script. Include the accepted files in the intended order, using the concat demuxer’s script format. Escape paths appropriately for that format.
- Run FFmpeg with the filtered script. For example, if the generated script is named
playlist.ffconcat, useffmpeg -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy output.mp4when stream copying is suitable. Choose output and encoding options for your actual use; stream copying does not make incompatible input streams compatible.
Check stream compatibility after filtering
A successful open is only one condition. The FFmpeg documentation warns: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Removing a file that fails to open does not fix differences among the files that remain.
If FFmpeg still fails or the joined result has artifacts, inspect the stream layout and timing of the accepted files. The documentation also warns that inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts. Where the media cannot be joined under the demuxer’s stream requirements, a different method may be needed.

Choose the right concat method
| Method | What it does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Reads a script and joins media streams in sequence, adjusting timestamps. | Playlist-based joining when inputs meet its stream requirements. The FFmpeg FAQ discusses cases where it can avoid re-encoding. |
| Concat protocol | Presents resources as one byte stream. | Only formats that support concatenation at the file level; it is not a general way to skip a failed playlist entry. |
| Concat filter | Concatenates decoded streams in a filter graph. | Consider when re-encoding is needed. The FAQ identifies this method for such cases; settings depend on the media and filter graph. |
See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating video files and the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the distinction between these methods.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using
-safe 0as a skip switch: it changes path acceptance only. Filter invalid entries before running FFmpeg. - Expecting
auto_convertto repair or bypass arbitrary files: it is not a general-purpose repair or skip feature. Check the specific conversion documented for your FFmpeg version. - Assuming a file that opens is safe to concatenate: compare stream layouts, codecs, and time bases across the accepted files.
- Seeing timing artifacts after the files open: check duration metadata as well as stream compatibility.
- Using the concat protocol for a playlist of unrelated media files: it joins byte streams only where the formats support file-level concatenation; use the demuxer or filter according to the media and re-encoding needs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream rather than build an FFmpeg workflow, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not live camera input. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
