Connect OBS to a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, test the picture and sound, then start streaming. The playlist can repeat while OBS and its internet connection keep running; looping does not guarantee an uninterrupted or literally endless broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A computer running OBS Studio on Windows, macOS or Linux.
- VLC installed on that computer. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
- The video files you intend to play, in an order you have checked.
- A YouTube channel and a broadcast configured in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Permission to broadcast every video and its audio.
OBS’s VLC Video source is designed for a playlist of media files. If you want to repeat just one local video, OBS’s built-in Media Source has a separate Loop option, which is off by default. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Check broadcast rights before building the stream
Being able to watch a video on YouTube does not mean you have permission to rebroadcast it. Check the rights for both picture and sound in every file, including music and other third-party material.
YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube detects third-party material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and issue a warning; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. If you have a license for third-party content, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist: a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and arrange any necessary allowlisting before going live.

Set up a repeating video playlist in OBS
1. Create a scene and add the VLC Video source
- Open OBS Studio and select or create the scene you want to use for the broadcast.
- In the scene’s Sources area, add a VLC Video source. If it is missing, install VLC and restart OBS.
- In the source properties, add the media files to the playlist. Arrange them in the playback order you want; use shuffle only if you want a different order rather than a fixed sequence.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents it as enabled by default, but confirm the setting in the source properties before you rely on it.
- Apply the source and check that the video appears in the scene. Resize or position it to suit the canvas and your layout.

2. Check video and audio in the scene
Watch the preview and confirm that the intended picture fits the canvas. Check the OBS audio meters while the video plays. Make sure the playlist’s audio is audible and that you are not unintentionally mixing in desktop or microphone audio. The right mix depends on the scene you intend to broadcast; OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains scenes, sources and audio checks.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
3. Create or select the YouTube broadcast
Open YouTube Live Control Room and follow its current prompts to configure a broadcast, including its visibility and stream settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses connection details from the live setup. Interface labels and available protocol choices can change, so follow the options shown in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot. 4. Enter the connection details in OBS
In OBS’s stream settings, choose the service/server details appropriate to the YouTube setup and enter the stream key supplied by Live Control Room. OBS’s Studio Overview Guide describes the server and stream-key fields. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screenshot, paste it into public chat, or include it in a public tutorial. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s current controls.
For a basic OBS setup, use the protocol and defaults offered by YouTube and OBS. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion as a distinct option for compatible encoders; its HLS guidance notes higher latency than RTMP and specifies segment and rolling-playlist requirements. Those ingestion segments are not the prerecorded-video playlist you made in OBS. Do not change protocols or apply HLS-specific settings unless you have selected HLS and your encoder supports its requirements. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Test the full signal path, then go live
5. Verify the stream before sharing it
- Start streaming from OBS and check the broadcast preview or status in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Confirm that the picture and intended audio reach YouTube as expected.
- Let the playlist advance through at least one transition. If practical, verify that it returns to the beginning after the last item.
- Check the broadcast’s visibility and other settings before sharing or making it public.
- Once the test looks right, proceed with the broadcast and check its status periodically.
OBS recommends testing settings before a first stream in its Quick Start Guide. That matters especially before leaving a playlist unattended: looping is a media-source behavior, not a guarantee that the encoder, computer, network or YouTube connection will remain available.

Keep the stream running—and know what “endless” means
With the local OBS method, the computer running OBS must stay powered on, OBS must keep encoding, and its internet connection must remain available. Check the stream periodically rather than assuming the playlist will keep broadcasting without supervision. If OBS stops, the computer sleeps or loses power, or the connection fails, the broadcast can stop even though Loop Playlist is enabled.
The cited OBS and YouTube documentation establishes how to loop media and connect an encoder, but does not establish a maximum broadcast duration, archive limit or promise of perpetual operation. Check YouTube’s current account and Live Control Room guidance for limits that apply to your broadcast.

Troubleshooting common problems
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC, then restart OBS and check the source options again. OBS documents that its VLC Video source requires VLC: Media Sources.
The playlist plays once and stops
Open the VLC Video source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. Do not confuse this with the single-file Media Source’s separate Loop option.
The video plays, but YouTube has no sound—or unwanted sound
Check OBS’s audio meters while the video plays and verify the scene’s audio sources. Confirm the media’s intended audio is included and remove or mute desktop or microphone sources if they are not meant to be part of the broadcast. Use the OBS preview and YouTube’s test status to check the actual output path.
YouTube does not receive the OBS stream
Recheck the service/server selection and stream key against the current Live Control Room setup. Confirm that OBS is attempting to stream and that the computer has an active network connection. Keep the key private; if it has been exposed, replace it using YouTube’s current controls.
The stream is interrupted after copyrighted material appears
Stop using material for which you lack broadcast rights. For licensed third-party material, contact the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; YouTube warns that a license alone may not avoid interruption. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
