There is no documented YouTube setting that automatically relaunches the last study stream after a TV or streaming device reboots. You can configure the device to reopen YouTube or a browser page at startup, then test whether YouTube restores the video and playback position on that specific device. Those are separate steps, and the second is not guaranteed.
First, distinguish autoplay from reboot recovery
YouTube autoplay concerns what plays after a video ends; it is not a boot-recovery feature. Its behavior can also differ by device. YouTube’s autoplay guidance describes autoplay and its limits, but does not promise that an app will reopen the last stream after a full reboot.
For a partially watched on-demand video, YouTube says it will “usually” resume where you left off when you select it again. This depends on selecting the video; it does not mean YouTube will launch it automatically after restart. YouTube’s progress-bar guidance also notes that clearing watch history clears progress bars.
A livestream is a different case from a replayable upload: the progress-bar guidance does not establish that a live broadcast will resume at its previous position. Plan to reopen the stream and check its behavior rather than relying on saved progress.

Try the TV or streaming device you already use
- Check startup and power-recovery settings. Look in the device or TV settings for options that restore power after an outage or launch an app at startup. Exact menu names and capabilities depend on the make, model, and operating system. A power-restore setting addresses whether the device turns on; it does not guarantee YouTube opens or restores playback.
- Check the YouTube account and progress behavior. For an on-demand study video, sign in and make sure watch history is available. After restarting, reopen the video from history or the continue-watching interface and see whether it resumes at the expected position. YouTube says this usually works for a partially watched video when selected, but it does not promise automatic reopening.
- Test the full restart, not just app switching. Reboot the device, wait for its network connection, and observe whether YouTube launches, whether you need to sign in or click Play, and whether it opens the right content. Repeat with the actual study stream. A test on one device does not establish behavior on another model.
Use a Raspberry Pi or computer as a browser kiosk
If the TV app cannot launch at startup, a computer configured to open a browser page at boot is another DIY route. Raspberry Pi documentation covers boot behavior and configuration; the community pi-kiosk project describes launching Chromium in kiosk mode and restarting it if it exits. This is a configurable approach, not a guaranteed YouTube recovery feature.
- Set up the device’s boot flow. Follow the relevant Raspberry Pi boot-behavior documentation and configuration documentation for your board and operating-system setup. A graphical session and any required auto-login must be configured for a browser to start visibly.
- Configure the browser to open the chosen YouTube URL. Use a kiosk setup such as the community project as a starting point. Ensure the device has network access before expecting YouTube to load; a browser opened before connectivity is ready may not reach the stream.
- Run a cold-reboot test. Reboot or remove power, allow time for startup and network access, then check whether Chromium opens the intended page. Confirm whether YouTube requires a manual click or account sign-in and whether the content plays as intended. Test the exact stream or video you plan to leave running.
- Plan for upkeep. A kiosk is another computer to configure and maintain. Browser, account, network, and YouTube behavior can all affect playback, so repeat the test after relevant changes.
Use casting or HDMI as playback fallbacks
For supported TV setups, YouTube casting lets a phone, tablet, or computer control playback. The supported method has account and network/device conditions; see YouTube’s smart-TV casting and companion-device guidance. Casting can make it easier to restart playback remotely, but it is not documented as automatic after a reboot.

If the TV’s YouTube app is the problem, YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another device and casting, or connecting a laptop to the TV with HDMI. HDMI is a playback alternative, not boot automation.
Know when YouTube may pause unattended playback
Even if a device launches YouTube and the stream starts, uninterrupted playback may prompt for attention. YouTube may show “Continue watching?” after 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV while autoplay is on. These are prompt timings, not reboot timers. YouTube says the prompt is intended to protect watch history and help avoid using data when nobody is watching; see its explanation.

- 6-core Intel Core i5 processor
- Intel UHD Graphics 630
- 8GB 2666MHz DDR4
- Ultrafast SSD storage
- Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, one HDMI 2. 0 port, and two USB 3 ports
YouTube’s autoplay help also says autoplay stops automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity on a mobile network or four hours on Wi-Fi. Those conditions concern autoplay inactivity; they do not establish a way to recover playback after a reboot.
Choose the approach by what needs to recover
| Approach | What it can address | What still needs testing |
|---|---|---|
| Existing TV or streaming device | Device power recovery and, on some models, startup app behavior | Whether the YouTube app launches and restores the intended playback state |
| Raspberry Pi or computer kiosk | Opening a browser page at boot, with a configurable browser restart approach | Network readiness, YouTube sign-in or click requirements, and playback on the chosen stream |
| Casting | Controlling supported TV playback from another device | Account/device conditions and restarting playback after reboot |
| Laptop over HDMI | Playing through a computer when the TV app has trouble | Computer startup and manual or configured playback; it does not automate TV-app recovery |
The right test depends on whether your study content is a live broadcast or an on-demand replay, whether you need the page or app to launch automatically, whether watch progress is available, and how much setup and maintenance you accept.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- The device turns on, but YouTube does not. Power recovery is not app launch. Check for a device-specific startup-app option, or use a configured browser kiosk and test it from a cold reboot.
- The browser opens a blank or error page. It may have started before the network was ready. Check connectivity and whether the kiosk can load the page after the connection is established.
- The video opens at the start or does not resume. Progress restoration is qualified: YouTube says a partially watched video will usually resume when selected. Check that you are signed in and that watch history has not been cleared. Do not assume this behavior applies to a live stream.
- Playback stops and waits for a response. YouTube may show a “Continue watching?” prompt during long uninterrupted sessions. A boot configuration does not answer that prompt for you.
- The TV app still fails. Try casting from a supported device or connect a laptop to the TV with HDMI to isolate whether the issue is specific to the TV app. These fallbacks do not create automatic recovery.
