The reliable way to turn a script into an AI microdrama is to treat it as a sequence of short, editable shots—not one giant text-to-video request. Lock the script, convert every beat into a shot list, define characters and locations in a visual bible, generate multiple short takes with references, then edit, caption, check rights and export a 9:16 master for each platform.

This workflow preserves story clarity and continuity while limiting the damage when a generation has bad hands, drifting costumes, unreadable text or broken lip sync.

What makes an AI microdrama different from a normal short video?

A microdrama is a compact narrative built around a clear turn: a discovery, confrontation, reversal or decision. Vertical platforms reward immediate comprehension, so the first seconds must establish who is present, what they want and what is at risk. AI video tools can create striking images quickly, but they do not reliably preserve a character, prop, screen direction or instruction across a long, single generation.

Plan the project as replaceable clips. Each shot should have one dramatic job, one primary action and a duration short enough to regenerate. The edit—not the generator—creates the final performance.

1. Convert the script into a shot list

Begin with a locked script. Do not prompt from a page of prose and hope the model discovers the intended structure. Mark every beat, location, character, action, dialogue line and sound cue, then assign a shot purpose, approximate duration, framing and continuity note.

Shot-list fields

Field What to record Why it matters
Shot ID A stable label such as S01 or S02A Lets you replace one take without losing the edit.
Story beat The information or emotional change delivered Prevents attractive but unnecessary footage.
Duration An estimate in seconds Helps you choose a model’s clip length and pace the scene.
Framing Wide, medium, close-up, over-the-shoulder or insert Creates visual coverage and protects the vertical crop.
Action and dialogue Exactly what happens and who speaks Reduces ambiguous prompts and continuity errors.
Sound Dialogue, room tone, effects and music cue Allows audio to be built deliberately rather than as an afterthought.
Continuity note Screen direction, eyeline, hand holding a prop, wardrobe state or emotional state Gives the next shot something specific to match.

Example of a usable entry

S04 — 4 seconds, medium close-up: Maya, wearing the rain-damp green jacket established in S01, reads the message on her phone. Her expression changes from relief to alarm. She faces screen right; the phone remains in her right hand. Rain and distant traffic continue under the dialogue-free shot.

Keep dialogue lines short enough to fit the selected clip. If a line needs a long performance, split it into a listening reaction and a reply, or record the final voice separately and edit around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan coverage and file organization

Number scenes and shots before you generate anything. Use folders such as 01_script, 02_references, 03_generations/S04, 04_audio and 05_exports. Name files with the shot ID, take number and date, for example S04_T03_2026-10-20. Save the prompt beside the rendered clip. This prevents a good take from becoming impossible to identify later.

Mark each shot as essential, useful coverage or optional. If credits or rendering time become limited, protect the essential shots first: the establishing image, the action that changes the story and the reaction that makes the change legible.

2. Build a visual bible before generating

A visual bible is the project’s continuity reference. Save it as a document beside the script and keep the same descriptors in every relevant prompt. Include:

  • Character name, apparent age range, facial features, hair, skin tone and body type.
  • Wardrobe, footwear, jewelry, carried props and any item that changes during the story.
  • Location architecture, time of day, weather, practical light sources and background details.
  • Color palette, contrast, lens or camera language and the intended level of realism.
  • Starting emotional state and how it changes in each scene.
  • Reference images for each major character, location and recurring prop.

Write a short descriptor that can be pasted consistently. Avoid replacing it with synonyms from shot to shot: “green waterproof jacket” should not become “olive coat” unless the costume actually changes. Record reference-image filenames and the shot IDs that use them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prompt structure

Separate information into clear components rather than a single poetic paragraph:

Subject: Maya, 28, short dark curls, green waterproof jacket, right hand holding a black phone.
Action: reads a message; relief changes to alarm.
Setting: rainy bus stop at night, sodium streetlight, wet pavement.
Camera: vertical 9:16, medium close-up, eye level, locked camera.
Continuity: faces screen right; jacket and phone match S01-S03.
Mood and motion: restrained performance, realistic rain, no extra characters.

Keep a master prompt and make only the shot-specific lines change. This makes it easier to diagnose whether a failure came from the model or from an inconsistent instruction.

Reference-image preparation

Use clean, well-lit reference images with the features you need to preserve. Keep the face unobstructed for a character sheet, then make separate wardrobe and location references. Do not mix a daylight portrait with a night scene and expect the model to infer every lighting change. Label which details are permanent and which are intentionally variable, such as a wet jacket or a changed expression.

3. Generate short clips shot by shot

Generate each shot independently so a failed take can be replaced without rebuilding the episode. Start with a low-cost or fast draft when your tool offers one, then spend higher-quality generations on the takes that survive the edit.

Using reference video and images

Adobe’s documented Firefly workflow accepts text or image prompts, composition-reference video and vertical (9:16) output. Its reference-video instructions call for a 5–10-second reference under 200 MB, with 1080p recommended for best results. Use a reference that demonstrates the desired movement or composition, not an unrelated clip whose lighting conflicts with your scene.

Adobe’s model workflows document short default durations and 24 frames per second settings. Select the shortest duration that can contain the action; a compact action is easier to keep coherent than a long, multi-event prompt.

Generate coverage, not one “perfect” take

For difficult actions, close-ups and emotional turns, create several takes. Vary one controllable element at a time—camera distance, movement or performance intensity—while preserving the visual-bible descriptor. Save the prompt and generation date with every candidate.

  • Use a wide or establishing shot to orient the viewer.
  • Use a medium shot for the physical action.
  • Use a close-up for the decision, reaction or reveal.
  • Generate an insert for a phone, letter, key or other plot-critical prop.

Do not ask one clip to introduce a location, walk across it, pick up a prop, deliver a long speech and end on a reaction. Split those beats and cut between them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to control credit and rendering costs

Most generators charge by credits, resolution, duration, model tier or some combination. The exact prices and allowances change by account plan, so record the current plan and model in your production log instead of relying on an old estimate. Draft with the shortest duration and a faster model, reject weak compositions early, and reserve premium generations for shots that remain in the edit. Keep several acceptable takes rather than rendering dozens of near-identical variations.

Budget for failed generations. A four-second shot may require multiple attempts when hands, faces or a prop are important. Count audio, upscaling, storage and captioning charges as part of the finished-video cost, not just the initial text-to-video credit. If a model has a queue or daily limit, generate essential shots first and leave optional inserts for later.

4. Protect character, camera and screen-direction continuity

Reuse the same character images, location frames and camera direction wherever the tool permits. Keep a continuity sheet listing which side of the frame each character occupies, where the light comes from, which hand holds a prop and the emotional state at the start and end of each shot.

OpenAI’s Sora prompting guidance supports 9:16 output and recommends separating prompt information into clear components. It also warns that instruction following is not always reliable. Treat every generation as a candidate, inspect it frame by frame and regenerate rather than trying to conceal a major continuity break with a fast cut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common continuity failures

  • Identity drift: facial features, hair or age changes. Reapply the same references and descriptor; shorten the action.
  • Wardrobe drift: colors, buttons or accessories change. State the garment and visible details in every shot.
  • Prop drift: an object appears in the wrong hand or changes shape. Use an insert or cut before the handoff.
  • Screen-direction reversal: a character who faced screen right suddenly faces screen left. State the direction and use matching coverage.
  • Physics and anatomy artifacts: fingers, reflections or contact with objects look wrong. Generate alternate takes and avoid relying on an artifact in a plot-critical moment.

When a model cannot hold a complex continuity instruction, simplify the shot instead of adding more adjectives. A locked camera and one gesture are usually more dependable than a tracking shot with several interactions. Cut on a hand entering frame, a door closing or a sound cue to hide a harmless transition, but never use an edit to disguise an identity or story error the viewer must understand.

5. Create dialogue, voice and sound legally

Decide early whether dialogue will be generated inside the video model, recorded by performers or added as a separate voice track. Separate voice production gives you more control over timing and intelligibility, especially when a generated face does not produce convincing lip movement.

Voice permissions

Use a voice you have permission to use, or a synthetic voice whose terms allow the intended publication. Do not clone or imitate a real person without the required consent and rights. Keep written consent and the applicable service terms in the project’s rights log.

Build a complete sound bed

  • Dialogue: clean, centered and loud enough on a phone speaker.
  • Room tone: a continuous ambience that hides cuts between generated clips.
  • Effects: footsteps, doors, notifications, rain and prop handling synced to visible actions.
  • Music: a track with a documented license for the platforms and territory where you will publish.

OpenAI safety guidance describes protections for image-to-video workflows involving people and blocks attempts to imitate living artists or existing works. Apply the same caution to faces, voices, likenesses and recognizable creative styles throughout the project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fixing lip-sync and dialogue timing

Write the spoken line in the shot list, but do not assume the generator will articulate every word correctly. For a critical line, generate a listening close-up, record or synthesize the final voice, and cut to a reaction or insert while the line plays. If you use generated speech, check pronunciation of names, numbers and abbreviations before editing the picture. Leave short pauses around lines so captions and sound effects do not collide.

6. Edit for a 9:16 phone screen

Create a 9:16 sequence before assembling the final cut. Reframe any wider source around faces and the active gesture. Keep important eyes, hands, text and props away from interface areas that may be covered by platform controls.

Editing order

  1. Place the strongest establishing image or action first; remove any opening that delays the conflict.
  2. Assemble clips in story order and trim pauses that do not add tension or information.
  3. Cut on movement or a sound cue when a generation has a visible transition artifact.
  4. Balance exposure and color so shots from different takes belong to the same scene.
  5. Add dialogue, room tone, effects and music, then mix while monitoring on phone speakers or earbuds.
  6. Add captions after picture lock. Use high contrast, readable sizing and short lines; keep them clear of faces and platform controls.

Adobe partner-model documentation lists vertical output, 24 FPS defaults, short selectable durations and synchronized audio for some models. Features vary by model, so verify the settings shown in your account rather than assuming every model supports every option.

Choosing tools by production need

There is no permanent best generator. Compare the model or plan against your actual shot list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Question to ask
Character consistency Can the same face, hair and wardrobe survive several shots?
Motion control Can you specify camera movement, eyeline and a simple physical action?
References Does it accept character images, location frames or a composition-reference video?
Speed and credits How long does a take take, and what does a failed take consume?
Rights Does the selected model and account plan permit commercial publication?
Audio Does it provide synchronized audio, or will you need a separate voice and edit?
Vertical output Can it render 9:16 directly, at the frame rate and duration you need?
Editability Can you export clean clips, regenerate one shot and keep project metadata?

Time-stamp your comparison because model names, limits, credit prices and licenses change quickly. A model that is excellent for a visual establishing shot may be a poor choice for a dialogue close-up. Mixing tools is reasonable when the rights log clearly identifies which model made each shot.

Optional software and hardware

A standard computer, a phone for review and ordinary storage are sufficient; no physical filming accessory is required for this script-to-video workflow. A vertical video editor and an auto-caption tool can reduce repetitive work, while licensed AI voices and royalty-cleared sound effects can improve intelligibility. Maintenance utilities such as Outbyte are optional workstation support, not generation tools. A service such as StreamNeo is relevant only if its current product actually supports creator-video hosting or distribution in your territory; verify its catalog, geography and terms before choosing it.

7. Run three quality-control passes

Do not rely on a single desktop preview. Watch the complete export three ways:

  1. With sound: check dialogue timing, lip sync, room tone, abrupt loudness changes and whether effects match the action.
  2. Muted: confirm the plot still reads through performance, framing and captions. Fix any scene whose meaning depends entirely on inaudible dialogue.
  3. On a phone: inspect caption size, safe areas, facial detail, dark-scene visibility and distracting interface overlap.

Also check names and pronouns, flashing or strobing frames, malformed hands or text, continuity of wardrobe and props, and whether the opening establishes conflict quickly. Watch the final rendered file—not only the editing timeline—because export settings can introduce new problems.

Accessibility and viewer comprehension

Captions should match the spoken words, identify meaningful sound when needed and remain long enough to read. Use line breaks that follow natural phrasing, not arbitrary word counts. Check contrast over bright backgrounds and keep captions away from faces, hands and controls. A muted review is also a story test: if a viewer cannot tell who acted and what changed, revise the cut rather than adding decorative effects.

8. Export, disclose and publish

Render a high-quality portrait master, then create destination-specific versions when a platform requires different limits. Confirm the current resolution, frame-rate, file-size, caption and synthetic-media disclosure rules immediately before upload; those requirements change and were not fully verified here.

If the video uses synthetic people, voices or scenes, follow the destination’s current labeling or disclosure process. Keep the uncompressed master and an archive of project files so you can correct a caption, replace a shot or provide provenance later.

Rights and provenance checklist

Maintain a rights log for every published microdrama. Record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tool, model, account or plan and generation date.
  • Prompt, reference image or reference video used for each shot.
  • Ownership or permission for character photos, locations, stock and other source assets.
  • Voice performer consent or synthetic-voice terms.
  • Music and sound-effect licenses, including territory and duration limits.
  • The platform disclosure decision and the date you checked its rules.

Adobe says, “Videos generated with the Adobe Firefly Video Model are designed to be safe for commercial use.” Adobe also states that commercial-use eligibility depends on the model and that partner models may have different terms. Treat that distinction as critical: a workflow using a partner model must be checked against that model’s own license.

Practical pre-publish checklist

  • Script locked and converted to a shot list.
  • Character, location and prop references saved.
  • Prompt structure standardized across shots.
  • Multiple takes generated for difficult actions and close-ups.
  • Voice, music and stock permissions logged.
  • 9:16 timeline and safe areas set.
  • Captions checked on a phone and with sound muted.
  • Rights and synthetic-media disclosure reviewed.
  • Final export watched end to end.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make the whole microdrama with one prompt?

You can test a one-prompt generation, but it is a poor production plan. Long prompts combine several actions and give you no clean way to replace one failed moment. A shot list with short, independent clips is more controllable and recoverable.

How long should each AI-generated clip be?

Use the shortest duration that contains the intended action. The available choices differ by model, and Adobe documents short defaults and 24 FPS settings in its model workflows. Split a long speech or multi-step action into several shots.

What if the character changes between shots?

Reuse the same reference image and exact descriptor, restate wardrobe and props, shorten the action and generate alternate takes. If identity still drifts, use a cutaway or insert for a nonessential moment, but regenerate any shot where the change would confuse the story.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should dialogue be generated by the video model?

Only when the result is intelligible and legally usable. A separate voice track gives you better control over pronunciation, timing and mixing. You can show a listening reaction or an insert while the approved voice plays.

How many takes should I generate?

There is no fixed number. Generate enough to compare difficult actions, close-ups and emotional turns, then stop when you have an acceptable take and a backup. Vary one factor at a time so you know why a version works.

Do I need a special camera or phone accessory?

No. The core workflow uses generated clips, an editor, storage and a phone for quality control. Physical accessories are not central to turning a script into a finished vertical video.

Can I use a famous person’s face or voice?

Not without the necessary permission and rights. Keep consent for any performer or voice, follow the selected service’s people and likeness rules, and avoid attempts to imitate living artists or existing works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Firefly partner models automatically safe for commercial use?

No. Adobe’s commercial-safety statement applies to videos generated with the Adobe Firefly Video Model. Adobe notes that commercial-use eligibility depends on the model, so check the separate terms for every partner model in your workflow.

What should I disclose when publishing?

Check the destination’s current synthetic-media labeling and disclosure process immediately before upload. Record the decision and date in your rights log, and keep the project files in case provenance is requested.

How do I keep captions inside the safe area?

Place captions away from the bottom and side regions covered by platform controls, then inspect the rendered file on a phone. Keep lines short, use strong contrast and make sure captions do not cover a face or plot-critical prop.

What to expect from the workflow

The main advantage is recoverability. A weak generation affects one shot instead of an entire episode, and the shot list gives you a clear replacement target. The trade-off is more preparation: references, continuity notes, take management, audio editing and rights records are part of the production, not optional cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Models and plans change quickly, so compare tools by the factors that affect your particular story: character and motion consistency, controllability, reference-image or reference-video support, generation speed, credit cost, commercial rights, audio features, vertical framing, clip duration and editability. Any ranking is time-sensitive; recheck availability, pricing and licensing on the day you choose a model.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest reliable way to turn a script into a vertical AI video?

Lock the script, convert it to a shot list, prepare a visual bible, generate short reference-driven clips, assemble them on a 9:16 timeline, then add approved voices, sound, captions and a rights review.

Why do AI characters look different from shot to shot?

Models do not always preserve identity, wardrobe or props. Reuse the same references and descriptors, simplify actions, state continuity details explicitly and generate multiple takes for difficult shots.

How can I estimate the cost before generating?

Check the current plan’s credit rules for duration, resolution and model tier. Draft with short, fast generations, reserve premium credits for selected shots and include audio, storage, upscaling and captioning in the budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a 9:16 export enough for TikTok and Reels?

It is the correct portrait format for this workflow, but each destination can change resolution, frame-rate, file-size, caption and disclosure requirements. Verify the current rules immediately before upload.

What should be in a microdrama rights log?

Record the tool and model, account plan, prompt and references, generation date, voice consent or synthetic-voice terms, music and effects licenses, and the platform disclosure decision.

Can I use a partner model inside a video platform for commercial work?

Only after checking that partner model’s own license. Commercial-use language for one model does not automatically cover another model offered in the same interface.

How do I test whether the story works without audio?

Watch the final export muted. The action, framing and captions should still reveal who acted, what changed and why the next shot follows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best way to fix bad lip sync?

Use a separate approved voice track, shorten the spoken line, cut to a listening reaction or insert, and reserve close-ups for takes with convincing mouth movement.

The Bottom Line

Make the microdrama shot by shot: lock the script, standardize references, generate replaceable takes, build the sound separately, edit for a phone, then verify rights and current platform rules before publishing. The result is more coherent—and much easier to repair—than a single all-in-one generation.
