You can’t force WhatsApp to display a particular preview image for a YouTube link. Start by checking that link previews are enabled in your WhatsApp account and that you copied the intended video’s link. If you own the video, you can change its thumbnail in YouTube Studio, but YouTube does not guarantee that WhatsApp will use it or say how quickly a change will appear there.
First, make sure you shared the right video link
- Open the intended video in YouTube.
- Below the video, select Share, then Copy link.
- Paste that link into the WhatsApp chat and check the preview before sending, if one appears.
YouTube also lets you include a start time when sharing. That changes where playback begins; it does not guarantee a particular WhatsApp preview.
If there is no preview, check WhatsApp’s setting
In WhatsApp, open Settings (or tap your profile picture), then go to Privacy → Advanced. Turn Disable link previews off if it is on. WhatsApp says this setting prevents links sent from that account from generating previews. It is off by default and does not control previews on links the account receives.
This setting addresses missing previews caused by that sender-side choice. It is not a way to replace a wrong thumbnail with a preferred one.

If you own the YouTube video, update its thumbnail
Eligible accounts can upload a custom thumbnail or choose a suggested one in YouTube Studio. A change may take time to appear on YouTube, and YouTube’s instructions do not promise that WhatsApp will display the selected thumbnail. Changing it is worth doing if the thumbnail is also wrong on YouTube, but it is not a guaranteed WhatsApp fix.
Why Open Graph tags won’t change a YouTube page
Open Graph metadata—such as og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url—is page information set by the owner of a website. It can help control previews for a site you manage. It does not give you a way to edit the metadata on YouTube’s page, so adding Open Graph tags to your own site will not change the preview for a YouTube URL.

WhatsApp’s developer documentation describes preview cards as something it attempts when possible, not something guaranteed for every message. The available documentation does not establish exactly which metadata WhatsApp selects for each YouTube link or provide a dependable refresh interval for a stale preview.
What to do when the preview is still wrong
- Confirm that the pasted URL belongs to the intended video; copy it again from that video’s Share menu if necessary.
- If no preview appears, check the sender’s Disable link previews setting. That setting is relevant to missing previews, not to choosing a different image.
- If you own the video and its YouTube thumbnail is wrong, update it in YouTube Studio, then allow time for the change to appear on YouTube. WhatsApp’s behavior remains unguaranteed.
- If the link leads to a website you control rather than YouTube, review that page’s Open Graph metadata. This option does not apply to YouTube’s own page.
The official instructions do not document a sender-side control to force a chosen image for a YouTube URL. They also do not establish that resending the same link, adding URL parameters or changing the YouTube thumbnail will refresh WhatsApp’s card. Treat those as unverified workarounds, not reliable fixes.
Keep link previews separate from clickable links
YouTube’s rules about whether URLs are clickable in video descriptions or comments are a different issue from whether WhatsApp shows a preview. YouTube says URLs in long-form video descriptions and comments can be clickable when advanced features are enabled, while URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are non-clickable. That distinction does not determine the preview WhatsApp displays.
