Standard videos use a 16:9 thumbnail; Shorts use a 9:16 design, and YouTube currently says Shorts custom thumbnails are added in Studio on a computer.
1. Decide what the thumbnail should promise
Before opening a design tool, write down the video’s main idea and the audience it is for. Choose one subject, moment or visual that communicates that idea at a glance. The thumbnail and title often appear together, so make them complement one another without promising something the video does not deliver. YouTube recommends clear, compelling titles and thumbnails that represent the content accurately (YouTube’s thumbnail and title tips).
YouTube reports that 90% of its best-performing videos have custom thumbnails; the help page does not state the statistic’s year, and it should not be read as a guarantee that a custom image will improve every video. YouTube Studio also offers thumbnail suggestions, so a custom design is not the only way to choose one.
2. Make the composition clear at small size
Give the image a focal point and remove details that compete with it. YouTube suggests considering the rule of thirds, using branding or descriptive text when useful, and choosing readable type. It also cautions that too much visual complexity can overwhelm. There is no official universal rule for a specific color palette, font or word count.
#1 Best Overall
- Simple, accessible and beginner-friendly app
- Select suitable dimensions for thumbnail or banner
- Different categories of attractive backgrounds
- Customization by adding text, overlay, and stickers
- Different brands to make thumbnail more attractive
- Use a subject large enough to recognize in a small preview.
- If you add text, keep it short and check that it remains legible when the image is reduced.
- Make sure the thumbnail and title work together rather than repeating the same message verbatim.
- When practical, preview the result at reduced size and on more than one screen. Thumbnails can display differently across devices.
- Keep the image honest: it should represent the video, not imply a scene or result viewers will not find.
You do not need a particular paid app, camera, tablet or accessory. Use an image editor you already have, or start with the suggestions available in YouTube Studio.
3. Export to the right dimensions and format
YouTube’s current upload recommendations differ for standard videos and Shorts. They also distinguish desktop file limits from the mobile limit documented for video thumbnails. Check the linked help page and the upload interface if requirements change.
| Content | Recommended dimensions and ratio | Minimum dimension stated | Formats and file size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels; 16:9 | Minimum width 640 pixels | JPG or PNG; desktop upload up to 50 MB, mobile video-thumbnail upload up to 2 MB |
| Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels; 9:16 | Minimum height 640 pixels | JPG or PNG; desktop upload up to 50 MB |
These are YouTube’s recommendations and requirements as described on its thumbnail upload and image requirements page. Podcast thumbnail rules differ; YouTube recommends a 1:1 image for podcast playlists.

Older advice often gives 1280 × 720 as the universal target or says every upload has a 2 MB cap. Neither captures the current distinctions above. For YouTube’s Test & Compare experiments specifically, its documentation says test images below 1280 × 720 are downscaled to 854 × 480. That is a test-specific rule, not the general upload recommendation (Test & Compare documentation).

4. Upload a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio
Standard videos
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Select the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file and select your exported image.
- Save the video’s changes.
Your account must be verified to upload custom thumbnails. Depending on availability, Studio may show Get suggestions; YouTube also documents Ask Studio suggestions based on a video’s transcript and themes. A changed thumbnail can take some time to appear publicly. See YouTube’s desktop upload instructions.
Shorts
YouTube currently says to add a custom thumbnail for a Short in YouTube Studio on a computer; the account must be verified. Use the 9:16 recommendation above. YouTube notes that a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may show an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscriptions on mobile, while the custom image may appear on other surfaces. Follow the current Studio interface if its Shorts controls or guidance differ.

5. Check the image against YouTube policy
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube lists nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that may lead to rejection and a strike. Its policy page says repeat offenses may result in thumbnail privileges being removed for 30 days or account termination; that is stated enforcement guidance, not a prediction that every violation receives the same outcome. Review YouTube’s thumbnail policies before publishing.
6. Test alternatives when the video is eligible
For eligible creators, YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare can compare up to three thumbnails for public long-form videos and podcast episodes on desktop. Advanced features must be enabled. The tool is not available for Shorts or for videos that are private, made for kids, or set for mature audiences.
YouTube judges the experiment by watch-time share, rather than choosing a winner solely by click-through rate. Its results can take a few days or up to two weeks:
Rank #4
- 1. Pick a background from GALLERY, COLOR PALLETE or TRANSPARENT.
- 2. You can add Text and stickers.
- 3. You can apply filters
- 4. You can change canvas size
- Winner: YouTube identifies a thumbnail as the winner based on watch-time share.
- Preferred: the evidence was not strong enough for YouTube to call a confident winner.
- None: YouTube found no strong statistical difference.
YouTube may keep a small control group outside the experiment. When comparing candidates, assess clarity, audience fit, small-size readability, accuracy and policy compliance, as well as the platform’s result. YouTube describes its own tests as concurrent; many third-party services may run sequential comparisons or optimize for click-through rate. Results from different methods, audiences or time periods are not guaranteed to agree. Details are in YouTube’s Test & Compare documentation.

- The custom-thumbnail option is missing: verify the account. For a Short, use YouTube Studio on a computer, as that is the current documented workflow.
- The upload is rejected: check that the image format, dimensions and file size match the applicable video type and device limit. Review the Community Guidelines as well.
- The thumbnail has not changed on the public page: YouTube says changes may take some time to appear. Confirm that you saved the edit, then allow time for the display to update.
- A Short shows a different-looking thumbnail on mobile: YouTube says a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may display an auto-generated 4:5 image on some mobile surfaces. Use the 9:16 recommendation and check the current guidance.
- Test & Compare is unavailable: confirm the video is public, long-form or a podcast episode, not made for kids or set for mature audiences, and that Advanced features are enabled. Shorts are not eligible.
- A test has no clear winner: that can be a valid outcome. “Preferred” or “None” does not establish a universal best design; use the result alongside your judgment about accuracy and audience fit.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it is not a thumbnail-design tool, but it can capture a web page as an image or PDF. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For a screenshot of a page to use as a starting asset, see ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Quick Recap
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
