If FFmpeg is still running but its network output fails, FFmpeg’s fifo muxer can attempt output recovery instead. These are separate failure cases, and neither guarantees gapless playback or that YouTube will accept a reconnect.
First identify what failed
Check whether the FFmpeg process is gone or remains active. The recovery method depends on that distinction:

Restart FFmpeg with a process supervisor
On Linux, systemd can manage FFmpeg as a service and start a replacement process after the previous one exits. Choose a restart policy and delay that suit your stream and host. A January 2025 FFmpeg-user post shows Restart=always and RestartSec=5 as an example, but it is a user-posted configuration—not a universally tested YouTube setup or a guarantee of reconnection within five seconds (FFmpeg-user post).
Use the example as a starting point to adapt and test, not as a complete service definition. Configure logging so you can see why FFmpeg exited, and decide how intentional shutdowns should work: an unconditional restart policy may relaunch a service you meant to stop. Follow the documentation for your service manager and verify the behavior on the actual host.

- Make the FFmpeg command reproducible. Keep the command, input settings, output URL, and stream key consistent between manual and supervised runs. Ensure the service has access to the required files, permissions, environment, and network.
- Configure supervision. Set a restart policy and retry delay appropriate to the expected failure. Do not assume the example values are optimal for your source or host.
- Check service status and logs. After a failure, confirm that the supervisor detected the exit, attempted a restart, and captured FFmpeg’s error output.
- Confirm the new feed in YouTube Live Control Room. A running service only tells you that a process was started. Check whether YouTube receives and previews the feed.
- Test a controlled failure before relying on it. Stop the process in a test stream, then inspect the supervisor logs and YouTube preview. The available guidance does not establish universal reconnect timing, preservation of the same watch event, or gapless playback.
Use FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery only if FFmpeg is still running
FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer can retry certain output failures while FFmpeg continues processing. It does not relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits. In the FFmpeg documentation, attempt_recovery defaults to false, so recovery must be enabled if appropriate for your command.
The documented defaults are a five-second recovery_wait_time, unlimited max_recovery_attempts, and a queue_size of 60 packets. These are option defaults, not a promise about how quickly a particular failure will recover. FFmpeg’s RTMP example uses -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and a one-second retry interval; that interval is an example value, not a universal recommendation.

Queue behavior is a key tradeoff. By default, a full FIFO queue blocks the encoder. Setting drop_pkts_on_overflow allows encoding to continue but can omit part of the stream. The restart_with_keyframe option defaults to false. Match the FIFO format and stream mapping to your actual audio or video command, and test the configuration before using it for a production broadcast.
Check YouTube’s stream settings and health
A restarted encoder must still send to the intended YouTube stream URL with a valid stream key. YouTube explains how to manage stream settings and reset a key; if you reset it, update the key in the encoder configuration as well (Manage live stream settings).

- Preview and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing the stream and watching the preview, stream-health status, and messages. Its encoder settings guidance also covers testing and RTMPS.
- Check errors and resources. Look at FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube’s diagnostics; check CPU load, review a local archive if available, and test the outbound internet connection (Troubleshoot your live stream).
- Test backup-encoder failover separately. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. That tests primary-to-backup failover; it does not establish that a single restarted FFmpeg process will produce uninterrupted playback.
