To change shows while viewers stay on the same YouTube live page, keep one encoder feed running and use a playout or broadcast-automation system to switch program sources on a schedule. YouTube Studio can schedule the broadcast event, but its scheduling workflow is not a timed playlist switcher for content inside an already-live feed. If each show needs its own event page, schedule separate YouTube broadcasts instead.
Choose between one continuous livestream and separate broadcasts
First decide what viewers should experience. A continuous stream keeps one live page open while the audio—and, if applicable, the video—changes according to your timetable. Separate broadcasts give each program its own YouTube event and video identity.
| Decision | One continuous feed | Separate scheduled broadcasts |
|---|---|---|
| Viewer destination | The same live page remains the destination while content changes. | Each program can have its own event page. |
| What must be automated | A playout system switches sources on schedule while the encoder feed continues. | YouTube events must be scheduled and started or ended; the encoder or API workflow must manage the events. |
| Archive identity | One continuing broadcast; archive handling depends on stream length and YouTube’s handling. | Separate broadcast videos are associated with separate events. |
| Best fit | A radio-style station with a changing timetable and one persistent live destination. | A lineup where each show needs its own event page, schedule, or reminder. |
| Implementation issue to plan for | Playout, encoder, or network interruption. | Incorrect event binding, start/stop transitions, or schedule timing. |
YouTube describes a broadcast as the viewer-facing event and a stream as the audio-video feed. Its Live Streaming API allows a stream to be reused for broadcasts scheduled at different times, while each broadcast is a distinct YouTube video. See Google’s Live Streaming API documentation.
Set up one continuous radio livestream
1. Prepare the program lineup and fallback
List what should play at each time: prerecorded shows, a live host or mixer, station IDs, and any fallback audio or visual. Decide what happens if a file, source, or scheduled handoff fails. Confirm that you have the rights needed to stream all material; the YouTube setup guidance cited here does not establish music-licensing rules.

2. Choose a playout or automation layer
You need software or a hosted playout service that can make timed source or playlist changes and output a continuous audio-video feed. The encoder and the playout system have different jobs: the playout system chooses what is on air; the encoder sends the resulting feed to YouTube. A computer-based software encoder can be sufficient, and YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders; dedicated hardware is not mandatory.
Hosted playout may suit an operator who does not want to maintain an always-on local setup. Playout.video advertises scheduled playlist switching and YouTube destination controls on its service site. Those are vendor claims: confirm the current feature set, plan limits, and suitability for your radio workflow directly before relying on it.

3. Create the YouTube event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event for the intended continuous broadcast.
- Open the event’s Live Control Room settings and copy the server URL and stream key.
- Enter those values in the encoder’s streaming settings, then select the event and the intended visibility setting: public, unlisted, or private.
- Configure the playout system to send its continuous output to the encoder. Keep the event, stream key, and playout schedule aligned.
YouTube’s encoder workflow covers both software running on a computer and standalone hardware. See YouTube Help: live streaming with an encoder.
4. Start the feed and verify the handoff
- Start the encoder output and follow the Live Control Room steps for the scheduled broadcast.
- Confirm that the correct event is paired with the incoming feed, and that picture and sound are present.
- Run a private or off-air test of a scheduled change: check that the outgoing program ends cleanly, the next source begins at the intended time, levels are sensible, and video remains valid.
- Set an operator alert and a recovery procedure. A timetable does not ensure that a computer, network, source file, or hosted service will stay available.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish the archive outcome for longer sessions. Consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance when planning an archive.

Schedule separate YouTube broadcasts for each program
Use separate events when shows need distinct public schedules, reminder options, event pages, or archived identities. YouTube’s scheduling workflow lets creators promote a stream, share its URL, and let viewers set reminders. Start with YouTube Studio’s live-stream scheduling and encoder instructions.
For a developer-managed workflow, the YouTube Live Streaming API can create scheduled broadcasts, bind them to streams, and change broadcast state. If auto-start and auto-stop are not enabled, the API client needs to transition the broadcast as streaming begins and ends. These event controls do not select which program source plays; retain a playout system if the feed itself must switch shows.

Some third-party integrations require particular event settings. For example, Switcher Studio’s instructions say auto-start and auto-stop must be enabled for the workflow it describes. Treat that as guidance for that product, not a universal requirement for every encoder.
Plan for failures and troubleshoot the handoff
- The live page is running, but the show does not change: YouTube scheduling manages the event, not timed content changes inside a live feed. Check the playout system’s schedule and source-switch configuration.
- The next show starts late or not at all: Check the schedule’s time and source assignment, confirm the next file or input is available, and make sure the playout output remains connected to the encoder.
- The event is scheduled but viewers see no feed: Confirm the encoder is sending to the server URL and stream key for that event, and verify the broadcast is in the intended state in Live Control Room.
- A separate event does not start or stop as expected: Check that the broadcast is bound to the intended stream and that the chosen encoder or API workflow is handling the required state transitions. For an integration, follow its own instructions for auto-start and auto-stop.
- Audio or video disappears during a switch: Reproduce the handoff in a private or off-air test, inspect both outgoing and incoming sources, and define a fallback source that the operator can activate.
- The stream or playout service becomes unavailable: Use the station’s alert and recovery procedure; a scheduled timetable alone does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing an always-on computer at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not switch a live microphone or camera into a radio program, so use a playout and encoder workflow above when that is what your station needs.
