To change a YouTube playlist’s privacy, open its settings, choose Public, Private, or Unlisted, and save. On desktop, the most direct route is YouTube Studio: Content > Playlists > Details > Visibility. On Android, open the playlist, tap Edit, choose a setting, and tap Save.
Choose the right playlist privacy setting
YouTube offers three playlist visibility options. Choose based on whether you want the playlist to be discoverable, shared by link, or restricted.
| Setting | Who can view it | Sharing and discovery |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone | It can appear in YouTube search, related videos and recommendations, on your channel, and in subscriber feeds. Anyone can share it. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link | It does not appear in the discovery or channel placements listed for public playlists. Anyone who receives the link can pass it on. |
| Private | Restricted; it is not publicly viewable | It is hidden from public discovery placements and has no shareable playlist URL in YouTube’s comparison. |
These distinctions follow YouTube’s playlist privacy comparison. YouTube notes that it and its human reviewers may still review private playlists for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention.

Change playlist privacy on Android
- Open the YouTube app and go to your playlists, using the profile picture and Playlists area if needed.
- Open the playlist and tap Edit.
- In Edit playlist, choose the new privacy setting.
- Tap Save.
YouTube’s Android playlist guidance describes this edit flow. App labels and locations can change; if they differ, look for the playlist’s Edit or Visibility control.
What to check if you cannot change visibility
- Confirm you own the playlist. YouTube says only the owner can change its privacy setting.
- Check whether the account is supervised. The feature may not be available on supervised accounts.
- Distinguish playlist privacy from video privacy. Changing the playlist’s setting does not itself change the visibility of the individual videos in it.
- Do not confuse a creation limit with an edit restriction. YouTube states that there is a daily limit on creating public playlists across YouTube, YouTube Music, and the YouTube API, and that access to advanced features may increase the limit. That is a creation limit; it does not mean you cannot change the visibility of an existing playlist. YouTube does not state a numeric threshold on the cited guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
Playlist privacy controls who can see a playlist; they do not keep a live stream running. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
