This makes OBS retry its output connection; it cannot restore a failed internet connection or guarantee that YouTube keeps the broadcast active.
Turn on automatic reconnect in OBS
- In OBS Studio, select Settings.
- Open Advanced.
- Find the Automatically Reconnect controls and enable the option.
- Set the retry count and starting retry delay for the interruptions you expect. OBS documents that the wait interval doubles on each retry; a retry count of zero disables reconnecting. The current interface defaults are not established here, so check the values displayed in your installed version rather than assuming a particular default. OBS describes the increasing wait as a way to avoid overloading services: “The retry time will double on each retry to prevent overloading services.” OBS Output API Reference
What reconnect does—and does not do
Automatic reconnect tells OBS to try sending its output again after a disconnect. It does not repair the connection between your computer and the network, make an unavailable YouTube ingest server respond, or guarantee that a broadcast remains active after a prolonged interruption. OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network problem between the computer and the remote ingest server. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
It helps to distinguish three states: OBS may be retrying its output, the network or ingest path may still be unavailable, and YouTube may or may not still have the broadcast active. A reconnect setting addresses only the first. If OBS reports that it is streaming but viewers see the stream offline, verify the broadcast state in YouTube Live Control Room and investigate the encoder-to-ingest connection before assuming the checkbox will restore it.

Check the YouTube broadcast and encoder setup
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Confirm that OBS is configured with the intended credentials and that the stream has not been ended. YouTube documents creating or scheduling an encoder stream and starting or ending it in its encoder instructions.
Auto-start and auto-stop are separate YouTube stream settings, not OBS reconnect controls. YouTube notes that these settings are copied when stream settings are reused, so check them in Live Control Room if you rely on them. Manage live stream settings

Troubleshoot repeated disconnects
- OBS keeps retrying but does not reconnect: Check whether the computer still has internet access and whether the ingest path is available. Retries cannot fix an ongoing network failure.
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnects: Treat these as network symptoms. OBS suggests trying another server and lowering video bitrate as troubleshooting steps. OBS connection troubleshooting
- OBS reconnects but the YouTube stream is offline: Check the broadcast state in Live Control Room. An OBS output retry is not proof that the YouTube broadcast remained active.
- Retries stop immediately: Review the retry count; OBS documents zero as disabling reconnecting. Check the configured count and delay in your version of OBS rather than relying on assumed defaults. OBS Output API Reference
- The stream uses the wrong or invalid connection details: Verify the stream URL and key in OBS against the intended YouTube Live Control Room stream. Reconnect is not a remedy for invalid credentials.
Test before relying on reconnect for an event
Run a test with the same OBS scene, YouTube stream settings, and network you plan to use. YouTube recommends encoder testing and describes testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
