At the end, finish the payoff before inviting viewers to one relevant next video or playlist. A long logo animation is not a required opening, and no intro or outro guarantees higher retention.
How do I make a YouTube intro?
Build the opening around the question, result, or problem promised by your title and thumbnail. The viewer should quickly recognize that the video is going to deliver what they came for.
- Open on the promised subject. Show the result, pose the question the video answers, or identify the problem it solves. Do not tease a payoff the video never provides.
- Give a brief orientation if it helps. Tell viewers what they will get or what the video will cover, then begin the substance. The exact wording and timing are editorial choices; there is no established universal script.
- Keep branding subordinate to the content. A brief, recurring visual or audio identity may suit your format, but a long logo animation or unrelated housekeeping can delay the promised material. Treat any fixed intro as something to evaluate, not a requirement.
Example opening
For a video titled “How to Fix a Slow Laptop,” an aligned opening could be: “If your laptop takes minutes to start, I’ll show you three checks to find the slowdown. First, let’s see whether startup apps are the cause.” The point is not to copy this script; it is to confirm the topic and move directly into useful content.
How long should a YouTube intro be?
YouTube does not establish a universally ideal intro length. Its audience-retention metric called “Intro” measures the percentage of viewers still watching after the first 30 seconds; that is a diagnostic point, not a recommended intro duration, target, or guarantee of success. YouTube advises checking whether the first 30 seconds match the title and thumbnail and experimenting with opening styles. See YouTube’s audience-retention guidance.

In practice, make the orientation only as long as it takes to set up the video. If the opening delays the promised material, try a tighter version and compare its retention with similar videos. Avoid treating a single percentage as a universal pass-or-fail score.
How do I keep viewers from clicking away?
Use the video-level audience-retention report in YouTube Studio to find where attention changes. YouTube says retention data typically takes 1–2 days to process, so a newly uploaded video may not have a complete report immediately.

- Gradual decline: Viewers are leaving over a stretch of the video. Review whether the pacing, detail, or transition through that section serves the viewer.
- Dip: Viewers may have skipped that moment or left there. Inspect the content around it; the graph does not establish one cause by itself.
- Spike: Viewers may have rewatched or shared a moment, or the section may have been unclear. Check the actual passage before deciding what the spike means.
- Top moment: Notice what drew attention and consider whether a similar useful moment belongs earlier in a future video.
Compare videos of similar length where possible, and change one opening element at a time. That is a practical way to interpret your own results, not a YouTube-prescribed experiment protocol or proof that one change caused a difference.
What should I put in a YouTube outro?
Complete the video’s main payoff first. Then offer one clear next step, such as a closely related video or playlist. A concise handoff gives interested viewers somewhere relevant to go without replacing the answer they came for with a string of unrelated requests.

Plan the ending so there is time and visual space for an end screen. Keep overlays away from important visuals. YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie wrote on December 17, 2025: “Design end screens and calls-to-action as part of the overall video experience” and “Make sure the overlays don’t cover crucial visuals your audience wants to see.” The design may look different depending on performance, viewer behavior, device, and context.
How do I add a YouTube end screen?
- Check eligibility and timing. YouTube end screens occupy the last 5–20 seconds, and a video must be at least 25 seconds long. They are unavailable in some contexts, including videos set as made for kids. Viewers can also hide them.
- Open the video’s editor in YouTube Studio. Use the end-screen controls to add eligible elements, such as a video, playlist, or subscription prompt. Check the current Studio editor for the options available to your video.
- Place elements in the ending space. Choose relevant elements and keep them clear of important visuals. Do not assume every viewer will see the overlay in the same way.
- Review performance. Check end-screen element click rate in YouTube Analytics and use it to decide whether the handoff is useful to your audience.

When an info card may fit better
An info card can point to a relevant video, playlist, channel, or eligible external link during the video. YouTube says creators can add up to five cards; external links require participation in the YouTube Partner Program, and cards are unavailable on videos set as made for kids.
