You can loop prerecorded gaming footage into a YouTube livestream with FFmpeg by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, assembling compatible video files into a playlist, and sending the output to YouTube’s ingest URL with your stream key. For a single file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats it indefinitely; for a list of files, use the concat demuxer when their media parameters permit, or the concat filter when you need to re-encode. Test the playlist and preview before going public: looping alone does not guarantee seamless transitions or automatic recovery.
Before you start: confirm your channel can livestream
YouTube’s stated eligibility guidance requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check your channel’s access in YouTube Studio before preparing the encoder. YouTube supports encoder-based streams for gameplay. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- A computer with FFmpeg installed and access to your local gameplay video files.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity above the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; its guidance also recommends RTMPS. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
Create an encoder stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream and select the encoder workflow. YouTube displays the ingest URL and stream key for the encoder. Follow the current on-screen setup, since available labels and settings can change. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Copy the URL and key into your local FFmpeg command or a private configuration file. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, place it in a public script, or share a screenshot that reveals it. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
Choose how FFmpeg joins your gaming videos
Repeat one file
For a single recording, place -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i option. FFmpeg documents -1 as infinite looping. This repeats the input; it does not itself ensure a gapless boundary, normalize audio or video, or restart a failed streaming process. FFmpeg FAQ
Use the concat demuxer for a compatible playlist
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join a list of files without re-encoding when their streams and media parameters are suitable. Validate the files together rather than assuming any mix of resolutions, codecs, frame rates, audio layouts, or timestamps will work as a stream-copy playlist. Check playback at every file boundary.

Use the concat filter when inputs need normalizing
The concat filter is the documented option when re-encoding is needed. It lets you build a filter-based output for inputs that require processing, but encoding uses CPU or available hardware-encoding capacity. The right choice depends on the files, desired transitions or normalization, and the computer’s ability to encode in real time. FFmpeg’s documentation explains the distinction; it does not prescribe one universally compatible playlist command.
Build and test the playlist locally
- Put the intended gameplay recordings in a dedicated folder and decide their order. Confirm each file plays correctly and includes the audio you intend to broadcast.
- Choose either an infinitely repeated input or a concat-based list. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the installed version and the actual input formats; FFmpeg options are position-sensitive and apply to the following input or output.
- Play the sequence locally, paying particular attention to the point where the last item returns to the first, and to transitions between unlike files. If playback stutters, drifts, or loses audio at a boundary, normalize or re-encode the inputs rather than assuming stream copy will fix it.
- Use the exact ingest URL and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room. Never paste a real key into an article, public repository, or shared command log.
There is no single universal FFmpeg command for every playlist format, YouTube setup, and encoding environment. Build the command around your files and current YouTube encoder settings, then test privately or with an appropriate scheduled preview before a public broadcast.

Set output quality and network capacity
Match FFmpeg’s output to YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you choose. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended ingest protocol is RTMPS. Settings can change, so consult YouTube’s live streaming tips and the encoder setup shown in Live Control Room when configuring the output; do not rely on an old command copied from another setup.
Allow more upload bandwidth than the stream’s total bitrate: YouTube recommends 20% headroom. For example, if the output uses a given total bitrate, the connection needs capacity beyond that figure, not merely a speed test result equal to it. A wired Ethernet connection to the router is an optional way to reduce wireless variability, not a YouTube requirement.

Start the encoder, preview, and go live
- Start FFmpeg with the tested playlist and private stream key.
- Wait for the stream to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. Review the preview for picture, sound, and the expected playlist order.
- When the preview is healthy, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the stream was configured to require that step. Monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream status while it runs.
- Plan how you will end and restart broadcasts and manage recordings. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is not a statement that every longer stream is forcibly cut off at exactly 12 hours or that every longer stream will be archived. Handle copyright and reused-content risks
Only stream gameplay and audio you have the rights or permissions to broadcast. A game recording can include music or other material governed by separate rights, so review the game publisher’s streaming guidance and remove or replace material you cannot use. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility does not grant copyright permission.
Also consider YouTube’s monetization rules separately from whether a stream can technically run. Repeating prerecorded footage does not guarantee monetization; assess whether the channel’s material meets YouTube’s current originality and reused-content requirements. Do not present a looping playlist as a way to bypass copyright or monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not show an incoming stream
- Check that FFmpeg is running and that the ingest URL and key exactly match the current stream in Live Control Room.
- If the key may have been exposed or replaced, use the current key and keep it private.
- Verify that the stream is configured as an encoder stream and that the output uses the currently supported ingest protocol.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or disconnects
- Compare the stream’s total bitrate with actual upload capacity; preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Check network stability, and consider Ethernet as an optional connection improvement.
- Verify the output settings against current YouTube guidance. A disconnected FFmpeg process does not restart itself merely because the input is looped.
Playback breaks between playlist items
- Inspect media parameters, timestamps, and audio/video streams at the boundary.
- Use the concat demuxer only for inputs compatible with that approach; use the concat filter and re-encode when normalization is needed.
- Test the complete sequence locally, including the end-to-start loop, before broadcasting.
The preview is black, silent, or has the wrong quality
- Confirm that the selected input contains the expected video and audio streams.
- Check the output mapping and encoder settings against the actual media and YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Allow YouTube time to receive and process the encoder feed, then verify the preview before starting the public broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer and connection to keep the encoder running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
