“YouTube clip” can mean two different things: a short link to a moment in someone’s video, or a separate excerpt or Short made from your own upload. To share a moment without uploading a new video, use More > Clip on the watch page. To publish a separate excerpt, use YouTube Studio’s clip workflow or, on mobile, Remix > Edit into a Short when the video is eligible.
Choose the right way to make a YouTube clip

A viewer Clip is a shareable link, not a downloaded or separately uploaded edit. The Studio and mobile workflows create content you can publish separately. The three-minute computer upload allowance is separate from the 60-second selection limit in the mobile Edit into a Short tool.
Share a moment with a viewer Clip
- Sign in to YouTube and open the video you want to share.
- Select More > Clip.
- Enter a title of up to 140 characters, then use the selection slider to choose a segment between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Select Share clip. Copy the link, embed it, or choose an available social or email sharing option.
The Clip loops from the original video’s watch page. A person who has the Clip link can watch it only if they can access the original video. Clips can be removed if the source is deleted, made private, or violates Community Guidelines; Clips made from unlisted videos remain available, according to YouTube Help.
Create a separate video clip in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Content > Videos, then select your uploaded video.
- Open Clips and Shorts, select Create clip or Short, then choose Video clip.
- Choose the excerpt by selecting transcript text and confirming it, or set the start and end timestamps in the timeline editor.
- Preview the excerpt. If useful and available for your video, add an intro or outro.
- Select Create draft, then complete the upload flow. YouTube recommends adding a link to the source video in the new clip’s description.
The workflow uses the transcript for selection and captions in the Short workflow. Available auto-captions can be styled or disabled in the preview. AI suggestions and outlines are currently limited to select countries—Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and select languages: English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Turn your upload into a Short in the mobile app
- In the YouTube mobile app, open the watch page for your own eligible public long-form video.
- Tap Remix > Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds, then add text or filters if you want.
- Review and upload the Short. Shorts made from your videos link back to the original video. YouTube Help
This option does not work for private or unlisted videos, or videos with third-party copyright claims. If Edit into a Short is missing, check the video’s Shorts remixing or sampling setting in Studio. YouTube Help YouTube Help
Upload a pre-edited Short from a computer
If you have already edited the excerpt into a file, upload it through YouTube Studio. YouTube’s Shorts upload guidance allows videos up to three minutes when they are square or vertical. That is the general computer upload allowance; it does not expand the mobile Edit into a Short selection limit beyond 60 seconds. YouTube Help

Check copyright before publishing
For an uploaded Short, make sure you have permission to use any copyright-protected material in it. YouTube warns that a valid takedown request can remove the Short and may result in a copyright strike. A viewer Clip simply points to the original video; it is not a way to download or republish someone else’s work. YouTube Help
