Make a useful website evidence pack by preserving the full relevant page, recording its exact URL and capture date and time, and checking every saved file. Keep a screenshot as a visual record; add a PDF or saved HTML copy when practical. No capture method by itself guarantees that a court will accept the material, so check the requirements that apply to your situation.
What to include in a website evidence pack
Each item should let someone understand what was captured, where it appeared, and when you saved it. A practical pack can contain:
- A screenshot of the full relevant page, including surrounding context needed to understand the content.
- The exact page URL and the date and time of capture, recorded with the file or in an index.
- A PDF copy, if a portable document is useful, and saved HTML where practical.
- A short index that pairs each filename with its URL and capture date and time.
- A separate secure copy when appropriate, taking account of who can access the device or storage.
The BC Society of Transition Houses recommends including the URL and capture time and date, and capturing the full webpage where possible. If comments, profile details, a poster identity, or other surrounding material matters, expand or include it rather than preserving only an isolated fragment. Choose a capture method

Build the pack step by step
- Identify the page. Copy its full URL and note the date and time you are capturing it. Include relevant identifying context, such as comments or profile details, if it helps explain the material.
- Capture the page. Take a screenshot that shows the full relevant page where feasible. If a full-page capture is unavailable, preserve enough surrounding context to identify and understand the content.
- Save a PDF if useful. In a desktop browser, open Print and select Save as PDF. If available, enable headers and footers so the PDF includes the website link and date.
- Save HTML when practical. Keep it alongside—not instead of—the screenshot. Locally saved pages may not render correctly, so inspect the result.
- Verify the files. Open the screenshot, PDF, and HTML copy. Check that they show the intended content, that relevant context is present, and that the PDF has not omitted material.
- Label and store the files. Use clear filenames and an index pairing each capture with its URL and capture date and time. Keep an extra copy somewhere secure if appropriate, especially if the material is sensitive.
- Check applicable requirements. If you intend to use the pack in a legal or organizational process, find out which formats and procedures apply. For video, the Florida guide specifically suggests asking whether the court can play it and which format it accepts.
Keep the record reviewable and secure
A screenshot shows appearance, while the URL and timestamp help identify the page and capture moment. A PDF can be easier to open and share, but printing does not always preserve an entire website. Saved HTML may retain additional page material, yet parts can break when opened locally. Keeping these formats together when practical gives a reviewer more context than relying on a single cropped image or file.
Use filenames that are easy to match to an index, for example 2026-10-03_1430_example-page_screenshot.png. The index is an organizational aid, not a formal court standard established by the cited guides. Consider who can access the storage location, particularly when the content could create a safety or privacy risk.

What a capture does—and does not—establish
A saved image, PDF, HTML file, or tool-generated metadata can help preserve and review material; none alone proves that a court will admit or consider it sufficient. A Chrome Web Store listing for ProofSnap advertises metadata, a hash manifest, a chain-of-custody report, and verifier options, but those are vendor claims, not a guarantee of admissibility. The European Commission Joinup README describes Website Evidence Collector as a Chromium/Chrome-based tool for storing website text and screenshots. Its README is dated 2019 and warns that visiting pages containing personal data processes that data; check maintenance and security before considering it for current use.
